In this video I shoe a horse that has recently developed a slight lameness with his left front. I also ran into another farrier, Seth Noble, at the barn and got to visit with him as well. Hope you enjoy the video!

My first cousin was a farrier. An excellent young fellow. His mother thought he should be a college educated professional. She hated his pickup truck and his name and farrier painted on the door. He finally took a job on an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico to make money to go to college as his mom wanted. He worked on the drilling deck and was killed by a steel board falling a couple hundred feet from the top of the rig and crushing his skull. Sad, sad end of a fine young man!

Wow. That’s an interesting but sad story at the same time. Sorry about your first cousin. I actually thought I was going to be a diesel mechanic before I started shoeing horses, believe it or not.

@@USAfarrier-pnwfarriershow This happened in 1973. His father was a supervisor over two joined oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico. I worked for my uncle in the fall semester of 1964 to get money to return to LSU and finish college. My cousin was just a good kid. He loved my mom’s mashed potatoes and he would stop by and visit with her and feast on her mashed potatoes. He told my mom that he had a premonition that he wouldn’t live long and he didn’t.

Trouble with pads like that is that debris gets in between the pad and sole and can be problematic . I started using the vetec silicone pads with the mesh . They give the sole an even distribution of weight , you can fill them to the top of the shoe or just below it . They don’t fit between the sole and the shoe so shoes tend to look tidy for longer seeing as nothing is compressing with each step . That’s a good looking shoeing you done there and I hope your charging plenty for it . Remember often horse owners only have loyalties to you until a new guy comes to town .

I have a new appreciation the art of shoeing. I will say that I would like to have a bungy cord attached to my upper body and then to the stall and make it adjustable so that when your bending your back doesn’t get tired and supports you because that position is going to cause severe back injuries and quickly. Just a thought
@USAfarrier-pnwfarriershow
@USAfarrier-pnwfarriershow Год назад
Yes and No. Ideally, you want to squat with your knees to take some strain off your back to help share the load but it is like anything else, the more you do something your body will develop muscle & strength from doing something repeatedly. When i first started my career, my legs and back were not conditioned and it was very exhausting trying to shoe. But, after almost 13 years, my body is pretty well conditioned for shoeing. It definitely is something I think about though longevity wise. Thanks for the thought!

@brethl Год назад
Great job! I have never personally used the frog cut out method. How do you deal with debris stuck under the leather pad?
@USAfarrier-pnwfarriershow
@USAfarrier-pnwfarriershow Год назад
The biggest thing is to make sure the client doesn’t use a hoof pick underneath the pad during the cycle. Basically once leather gets a little moisture, it’ll naturally form to the contour of the sole. But if you hoof pick underneath it, it’ll mess that form up and you’ll get rocks/debris underneath it. I don’t think you can get this affect with a plastic pad though since it’s not malleable like leather.

@Backcountryhiker
@Backcountryhiker День назад
I had heard that you don't want to cut the frog away because it is a natural cushion???
@USAfarrier-pnwfarriershow
@USAfarrier-pnwfarriershow День назад
Not necessarily a cushion. It’s more like the heart of the foot. When loaded, it sends blood supply through the foot and limb. You don’t want to trim it too short because that can cause pain but you also don’t want to leave it excessively long either because it can lead to bacterial infections with crap not being able to clean out easily.

Without packing, how much 'crap' for lack of a better word, is going to get trapped up next to the sole. I can't thing that anything other than dry sand would be detrimental to the health of his feet. It does look like a very clean stable but he's going to be stepping in excrement. Even turnout onto grass, loam and compostable dirt will hold moisture and I'm thinking that's a recipe for thrush. Fine gravel could easily work in under that pad and be difficult to remove. So put my mind at ease - am I seeing problems that that don't occur without packing this pad?
@USAfarrier-pnwfarriershow
@USAfarrier-pnwfarriershow Год назад
@georgegoertzen So the biggest thing is for the owner to not get there hoof pick underneath the pads during the cycle. With leather, it is malleable so it actually molds/forms to the sole really quickly creating a natural bond between the two providing a layer of protection to the foot/sole allowing it to grow and not be debrided so much without the pad. Generally thrush likes to thrive in commisures and frog area so it is important to have the pad cut out enough in that area allowing the foot not to be packed full of crap creating a hostile environment for anaerobic bacteria. Now if it was a plastic pad, I would think all those points you brought up would happen because plastic/rubber won't naturally form to the sole. Those are all valid concerns or questions and the biggest thing is to not rupture the bond between leather pad & sole during the cycle and you won't have issues. I've used this method many years now and haven't had any issues yet(knock on wood lol).
