Mariko is from a samurai family. Women are trained to fight as well, although they are only expected to do so if there is no choice and they are the last defence.

A hatamoto was a high ranking samurai in the direct service of the Tokugawa shogunate of feudal Japan.

Hatamoto originally refers to a group of warriors who were under the banner of a shogun and escorted him on the battlefield. It generally refers to the status of a warrior who was a direct retainer of the Tokugawa shogunate during the Edo period

My favorite episode so far. It was amazing. The writing, acting, character relationships. That was all so strong this episode. It was before as well, but relationships deepen here and it is wonderful to see with such guarded, nuanced and amazingly well written characters.

This episode was stupid fun. Political machinations combined with Anjin shenanigans, Rodriguez shenanigans, and Mariko-sama catching those feelings. I loved it. Already watched it twice today.

I only wish these episodes were twice as long, I enjoy them so much! Watching how all the different relationships are developing, whose loyalty can be bought and whose honour is priceless, makes this so compelling! Love the bawdy humour between Rodrigues and John, and his endearing awkwardness when talking to Mariko - but Toronaga's tricks and his quiet wisdom always make me smile! Shogun is proof that good writing is the heart of any successful show! Great reactions, both!

In realty Gracia and her husband were for loving couple. In drama , did you see her eyes and expression, when her husband said good by to his master and fight off towards enemies, her admiration towards him.

I love that part. He wasn't a very good husband to her, but you can tell that she still admires him and is mourning him. But Anna Sawai's performance makes it clear that even as she's mourning, her feelings about him are very complicated.

@@jasminda2401 Real him was excellent husband. Although Mariko's (Gracia Hosokawa) family died in shame, her husband did not divorce her and kept away from danger. He was noble man and great warrior like other great samuri , cultivated on arts.

About Crown and church, despite Portugal being a catholic, we did not always get along with the church, both have a diferent agenda and sometimes they colide, always about expansion, land, resources and influence.

Yes same with a lot of papist (Catholic) states. There was always tensions between the Crown and Rome. The Vatican was very politically involved in keeping their monarchs in line, but it wasn't always successful. You should watch 'the Tudors ' to see how England pulled out of it and became Protestant.

@@dana8503 No need, i’m Portuguese, you know the evil dudes in the show, in 1775 after the Lisbon earthquake, there was an attempt of regicide, there was strong evidence of Jesuit order being envolved, in the same períod the started several armed revolts with the indian tribes of Brasil.

In the book they all laughed while seeing Buntaro Hiromatsu was fighting knowing what he is capable of. When Toranaga looked towards Blackthorne he was expecting him to be happy about escaping along with them, instead Blackthorne was angry because he thought they had abandoned Buntaro. Toranaga couldn't comprehend such a reaction by this barbarian. Its been since the 80's that i'm having to recollect and i only read the book once.

I am yet to see why they cast Cosmo Jarvis. The scene where he ranted at Ishido about men not disrespecting women would have resulted in immediate decapitation. In the first one Chamberlain acted like he had gone mad, which puzzled the Japanese, and he got away with it. A direct challenge to the authority of the Samurai by a Barbarian would not have been tolerated. Apart from that the Japanese actors are doing a great job. Killing off Buntaro so early was odd. Please watch the 1970's version if you can, it was in many ways a work of art. I have no problem with this version focusing more on Toranaga and the awesome mana of Hiroyuki Sanada.

Sure it would have - aside from the fact that Ishido wants Blackthorne alive to use him in the war. This version is actually a bit closer to the book anyway, where Blackthorne actually ends up trying to fight Ishido during this and is only stopped from doing so by Yabu.

If Mariko's character is based on Hosokawa Gracia , she stayed in Osaka and died . Her husband was famous warrior and stayed with Tokunaga and lived around 85 years old. At a resident of Hosokawa, Ishido demanded Mariko as a hostage but Mariko ordered to her man to kill herself for forbidden being committing suicide as Christian.

The Pope in Rome is the head of the Catholic Church. Catholic monarchs are secular authorities not religious authorities. In England, Henry the VIII split from the Catholic Church and declared himself and his heirs the head of the Church in England. This era is when the beginnings of separating church authority from power and influence in state authority become what we know today. Kings got tired of meddlesome priests and zealous followers and the bloody strife they could create.

The portoguese captain wasnt just a random dirty peasant captain, he was the gouverneur of Macao and vice king of all asian islands, he had the say on all real world matters.

The vice king was in Índia, the rule of Macao falls to the Vice King who representes the Portuguese crown in Asia…. So the portuguese captain serve the Vice King. And The Chinese govern allowed the concession of Macao to the portuguese for the construction of a trading post “ for três” or secret base like is described in the show, in return for help the chinese on their fight against japanese pirates.

No, he is simply the captain of a Portuguese treasure ship (called the black ship by the asians due to the collour of the wood), Ferriara leads a Galean for trade betwen Portugal, China and Japan, while in Asia he serve the crown represented by the vice-king. Black Ships in Asia were both respected and feared due to their superior fire power...

It means he's first Samurai, higher than all of other Samurai in the service of Yoshi Toranaga.@@FanPops - more or less, John protected his lord and he also demonstrated his ability to win on his own. Lastly, there's a level of trust between these 2 men that will color the episodes to come.

Makes me wonder if the Portuguese never arrived in Japan if the World War of later years would have ever happened. Theres definitely hatred for the world that grew throughout the centuries

Even during WWII the mentality of “to the death” is an infamous part of the Japanese tactics during the war. Also I just want to clarify that in the case of Samurai warfare it is not considered cowardly to retreat to get a tactical advantage. For example, Ishida Mitsunari retreated from Kuisegawa towards Sekigahara to get a strategic advantage. As the valley was a choke point, and it had mountains and hills that would give a great tactical advantage to the defenders.
