So for clarity, Yabushige's deal with Ishido was to help him capture Mariko so she would be prevented from leaving. It was NOT to assassinate Mariko (notice the shinobi were trying to carry her away), so by sacrificing herself she actually threw a wrench in Ishido's plan.

Exactly. Now the other regents know that Ishido will stop at nothing to enforce his will. They're supposed to be equal, but Mariko's death makes it clear their status means nothing.

Mariko was finally allowed to die according to her Samari heritage while saving Lord Tornaga's family and restoring honor to her own so now her son will honor the family name. Lady Ochina can end this situation by backing Tornaga. The head families will follow her giving Tornaga absolute power-Shogun!

Yabishige has definitely been the standout for me in this show. I adore his actor, have for ages (for a Western audience, you may know him best from the Thor series), but seeing him in this is something else entirely. His relationship with John is stellar.

R.I.P to my favorite character Mariko. It's very important to the Japanese in this story 'how they die'- taking one's fate into one's own hand. She created an epic story and powerful catalyst for change in Japan with her death. She also restoring some honor to her family name. Flowers are only flowers because they fall.

In truth I do do understand a lot of the Japanese used ,,,,My wife says that a Lot of it is covered in high school Japanese.........But what a great show....I have read the novel, saw the original mini series...........man. this holds up in so many ways.......

I belive the term for his character archetype is "magnificent bastard", someone who is objectively a bad human being in most of the things they do but puts such charisma into it that you can't help but feel affection for him.

Kudos to you, sir. Practically none of the reactors I saw followed that the shinobi were Ishido's. Nearly everyone thought they were Crimson Sky when it was really Mariko alone.

The color of the sky at dusk when Mariko tried to commit suicide was The Crimson Sky. It would be great if Mariko were still alive, but the historical facts are as follows. Mitsunari Ishida (Ishido in SHOGUN), who was an enemy of Ieyasu(Toranaga in SHOGUN), tried to take Garasha Hosokawa (Mariko Toda in SHOGUN) hostage at Tamatsukuri's Hosokawa mansion in Osaka, but Garasha refused. The next day, Mitsunari went out to use his force and had his soldiers surround the mansion. When the vassals told Garasha everything, Garasha prayed a little, then gathered all the maids and ladies in the mansion and said, ``As my husband has commanded, I alone want to die,'' and led them outside. . Later, as suicide is prohibited in Christianity, the chief retainer, Hidekiyo Ogasawara (Shosai), intervened with Garasha and committed suicide by setting explosives in the mansion and setting it on fire so that no body would be left behind. Her death haiku was, ``Only when you know when it is time to scatter can flowers in this world become flowers and people become people.'' A few hours after her death, Father Niecchi Sordi Organtino visited the burnt remains of the Hosokawa mansion, picked up Garasha's bones, and buried them in the Christian cemetery in Sakai. Ishido must have tried to imprison Mariko somewhere. Rather than killing Mariko in the video, he was trying to kidnap her. If he kills Mariko, he will make enemies and divide his allies. That is Toranaga's aim. Before the full-scale battle begins, the outcome of the Battle of Sekigahara will be decided by how many daimyo join your side.

In actual history, When the Battle of Sekigahara occurred, Buntaro led his army into battle, but Ishido tried to take Mariko, who was in Osaka, hostage. Before being taken hostage, Mariko had her servant behead her and blow up the mansion. A descendant of Buntaro and Mariko is Morihiro Hosokawa, the Prime Minister. There are several episodes in which Buntaro was unusually fond of Mariko. There was hair in Mariko's cooking, so Buntaro cut the cook's head. The gardener was so fascinated by Mariko's face that Buntaro cut her head. Because Christ was a man, Buntaro cut off the nose and ears of the servant who indoctrinated Mariko into Christianity.

If you're expecting a "big battle episode" I don't know what show you've been watching. This show does some violence and action but it's never the main point, its always in service of the main point - expertly written political intrigue. Don't expect a gigantic conflagration in episode 10. We might get a few scenes of major conflict, but it would be out of character for the show to have a full "battle of the bastards" style massive battle, even for Sekigahara.

5:29 Noting the old days of historical rap battles. Surprisingly I could easily see a revamp of Julius Caesar vs Oda Nobonaga, with Mark Anthony and Hiditori jumping in and then Augustus and Tokogawa finishing it with how they became the final unifiers after their main man’s deaths.

Tonsure is the removal of the hair to signify giving up on the vanities of worldly life. The practice is used in a lot of cultures to visibly show some sort of change in life or dedication to some goal or ideal.

at this point in the story, Blackthorne is irrelevant so his irrelevance since the beginning doesn't bother me. This episode is all about Mariko and I was just so impressed by Anna Sawai's performance and the screenplay. So well played.; so Well written. Also liked the development of Ochiba character, as Mariko and Ochiba are easily the two most powerful (and I'm not being sarcastic, they really are) female characters in the book. This writing and this episode truly does them justice. Hated the last several episodes, as they've done nothing with the Blackthorne character and never developed any chemistry much less "love" between Mariko and the pilot.. so the final "connection" here seems a bit out of place.. but hey.. something is better than nothing.

I wouldn’t say his story irrelevant it’s really supposed be from the viewers pov he’s a fish out of water and doesn’t know what’s going on and even from the beginning of the season blackthorne and Mariko have had feelings for each other even arguing more than like a married couple than her and buntaro when she’s about to “die” she gets to have one last night with John.

Crimson Herring. I will stand firm on my position that Mariko suffers from Disney Princess Syndrome in her relationship with Buntaro from the Flashback since Ep6, to how harshly she treats with him in ep8 (though, as i said before, she is right to reject him). But Mariko, Toranaga's Retainer, is an entirely different story. (Side note: I am happy the gate scene was not a "girl-power mopping the floor with all those men" moment) Now all of Osaka's Lords are soured against Ishido; and Ochiba might have to put the engagement on hold in order to Mourn Mariko. Her mission is a success. Speaking of which, its so heartwarming and heart breaking that scene between Mariko and Ochiba. I'm Happy Ruri-hime did not just outright hate Mariko for being her father's daughter; but their exchange was so heartbreaking as they both knew each other so well and what the other was doing and them pleading with each other to make the step to end the hostilities, and saying their goodbyes like that... i think I'm sweating through my eyes. And Blackthorne finally doing the right thing and deciding to Second Mariko, instead of just dismissing all of Japan's customs and cultures as BS , that was the best gift he could have ever given her.

Tbf, yes, they're playing both sides to gain power, but Littlefinger is a definition of pure evil while Yabushige is an idiot who is easy to take advantage of.
