Badd Medicine here and its reaction time
Shōgun follows the collision of two ambitious men from different worlds, John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), a risk-taking English sailor who ends up shipwrecked in Japan, a land whose unfamiliar culture will ultimately redefine him; Lord Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada), a shrewd, powerful daimyo, at odds with his own dangerous, political rivals; and Lady Mariko, a woman with invaluable skills but dishonorable family ties, who must prove her value and allegiance.

Ishido's plan was to have the Shinobi capture Mariko, not kill her - this is the plan Yabushige signed up for, and why, just before the ladies suggested the stronghold of the building they hid in, Yabushige tries to usher them to the gate where she would presumably be taken (alive). But when the Shinobi were preparing to blow the doors open, Mariko took it as an opportunity to STILL expose Ishido's ruthlessness and execute her duty to her father AND her liege lord (Toranaga)while finally achieving the release she has sought since her family's murder. It's heartbreaking, but what a sacrifice!

So... students of Japanese History of the time period knew from the beginning that Mariko's end would come by suicide in an attempt to avoid being captured by her lord's political enemies. Mariko has always been clearly the historical role of the real-life woman, Gracia Hasegawa, who opted for a form of suicide-protest to prevent herself from being captured and tortured by the political enemies of her lord. Think of it like having someone come into the theater late to see the movie Titanic and never realizing that the ship was going to sink. Thinking it was only a love story between Rose and Jack, and being completely surprised by the fact that it hit an iceberg and sank. And the rest of the audience who knew the history all understood from the beginning that the ship was going down and many people would die in the shipwreck, kind of looking over at the surprised people going, "Didn't they know?!?" To extend the Chess metaphor, Toranaga just sacrificed his Queen in order to trap the enemy King in Checkmate.
@Rabbithole8
@Rabbithole8 11 дней назад
Gracia Hosokawa did not choose to commit suicide. James Clavell inserted a fictional loophole that Mariko would escape committing a mortal sin if she is actually killed by the person seconding her. In reality, that was not and is not Catholic doctrine. Intent matters. As far as Gracia Hosokawa is concerned, she was murdered by the family retainer Ogasawara Shousai preciously because she refused to commit seppuku.
@TheGhost-fk4eo
@TheGhost-fk4eo 11 дней назад
*Hosokawa Gracia And she technically didn’t commit suicide. A retainer killed her instead because of the fact that suicide is a sin in Christianity. Whether the person did it on their own, was told by Gracia, or ordered beforehand by Hosokawa Tadaoki (her husband) is unknown.
@Rabbithole8
@Rabbithole8 11 дней назад
@@TheGhost-fk4eo Thanks for pointing out the typo. You are correct, of course. It is highly unlikely that Gracia Hosokawa asked to be killed. Again, that would be a mortal sin.
@TheGhost-fk4eo
@TheGhost-fk4eo 11 дней назад
@@Rabbithole8 considering the circumstances, it wouldn’t be that outlandish considering the alternative was probably torture and possibly death.
@Rabbithole8
@Rabbithole8 11 дней назад
@@TheGhost-fk4eo They would not have tortured her. The point was to take her hostage. Mitsunari aimed to take her as a hostage to ensure Hosokawa Tadaoki's cooperation.The fact that she was killed was a pivotal moment that turned many daimyo and noble families away from Ishida Mitsunari towards Tokugawa Ieyasu. What you are forwarding is the possibility of Gracia's fears of capture and its potential dishonor as leading to her the decision to have herself killed. Those fears in and of themselves were not unwarranted at the time, but they do not fit this context. The purpose here was clear, to ensure her husband's cooperation. Therefore, it is unlikely she felt that she would be dishonored or killed. On top of that is her Catholic commitments. The speculations that she committed seppuku or ordered herself to be killed do not account for these essential factors but simply appeal to general occurrences and fears durning the Sengoku Period. Again, it is highly unlikely she asked to be killed or committed seppuku, but it is more plausible that Ogasawara Shousai killed her to make sure that she could not longer be used to control Tadaoki. It is a matter of what is more probable not what is possible.

Mariko was Toranaga’s Crimson Sky… she confronted Ishido in a crimson outfit overlay with a white overcoat… when the entourage tried to leave the castle she was in a crimson outfit again! Even her seppuku was planned at sunset! Mariko is so awesome! Ishido lost the chicken game! So he decided to use Yabushige betrayal to allow the ninjas to kidnap Mariko. She was meant to ‘disappear’, so that, leaving the castle for everyone will be stopped. But they didn’t expect Mariko to sacrifice herself rather than to be captured! Ishido’s big mistake! Mariko and death have been on a collision course since the first time we see her. As much as we thought, or hoped, that John might have changed her mind, Mariko's story is so much bigger than her time with the Anjin. it's sad, but it was only ever going to end one way for her.

The Shinobi or "ninjas" came in to take Mariko. Basically ensuring her safety while taking her away from the castle since she's already insighting a rebellion. Remember her death means disaster for Ishido since a member of a great house dying under the "protection" of one of the regents means the regent needs to answer for it. It's all about the formality and Mariko really did go there to die regardless.

Mariko's death is in the book by James Clavell. As others have said, Ishido didn't want her dead. Her death will be his downfall.
@tomatoe4911
@tomatoe4911 12 дней назад
In the scene where Mariko almost commits seppuku, John steps up and offers to "second" her (in other words, chop off her head, as we've seen in earlier episodes) out of pure care and respect for her, as Kiyama had not shown up, and there was no one else there to offer her the mercy of a quick death instead of a slow, agonizing, painful one. Similar to how heretics were burned at the stake in the middle ages and someone would shoot them with an arrow in the heart to put them out of their misery, as soon as the pain of disembowelment became too great and the person started to cry out, their head was chopped off. It may seem odd from a western point of view, but it helped to preserve that person's honor while also granting them a quick death. If you watch it back, you can see the fear Mariko's eyes when she realizes that no one is there to second her, and she trembles as she removes her rosary. Attempting to stop it would be something John would have tried before, yes, but arguing with her to reconsider at that point would have just been an insult to her. At this point in his personal journey, John has learned a lot from Mariko and the meaning of sacrifice, and what makes the scene so beautiful is that he is willing to step up and make a personal sacrifice of his own -- sacrificing HER, just as she is willing to sacrifice herself to what she knows is a much greater cause. I would say thankfully, we didn't have to! But, ya know... :(

*JAPANESE HISTORY ENJOYER HERE* Mariko’s real life equivalent Hosokawa Gracia did indeed die after (Ishido’s real life equivalent) Ishida Mitsunari attempted to kidnap the close family members and allies of Tokugawa Ieyasu (Toranaga’s real life equivalent). Just wanna clear up that this was normal in Samurai Warfare, and Tokugawa Ieyasu would have done the same. In the story she commanded one of her men to slay her whilst her piers escaped to safety. Mariko’s death is also very important in the book. This is not something they can retcon, as you will see, her death has major consequences in the story of Shogun. In real life it was minor as it just made Ishida Mitsunari more unpopular than he already was (also I just want to clear up that his real life equivalent was not evil or power hungry like Ishido, he was actually pretty reasonable, and unlike Shogun, he was the one fighting an uphill battle against the actually power hungry Tokugawa Ieyasu). Because Hosokawa Gracia was not only a respected Noble woman, but she was the last child of Akechi Mitsuhide. Yes his legacy was tarnished due to his betrayal of Oda Nobunaga and his rivalry with the Taiko. But, his family name still held great respect, and the fact that she was killed disgusted many of the noble families. Edit: Yes, Shogun is a historical fiction. But, it follows VERY closely to real historical events. The author of the original book James Clavell intended for it to be a fictional retelling of historical events. So whilst the details and in-betweens are changed and dramatised (For example, Hosokawa Gracia never even met John Blackthorn’s real life model William Adams), the major events and big picture remains the same. Here are some of the historical events that were also in the show: William Adam’s arrival in Japan, The Taiko’s death, Heir too young, Council of Regents, The invasion of Korea, Akechi Mitsuhide (Mariko’s dad) Assassinates Yodo-Dono (Ochiba)’s uncle (Father in the show) Oda Nobunaga, and of course Mariko’s death.

John was referring to a psychological hell rather than literal hell for himself. He would be committing a lawful killing without malice which by definition isn't murder. He would save her soul from eternal damnation but he would have to live with the trauma of killing her with his own hands. Still a pretty romantic gesture putting mariko's wants ahead of his own while in contrast to buntaro who's selfish love did the opposite.

Thing is Toronaga, Ishido and Yabushige all are playing the same game useing essentially the same methods. The audience is meant to side with Toronaga more or less because Toronage is the one who keep Blackthorne around. Though by now it should be clear not because the "white saviour" has any saving to do. He is a pawn and he is basically fun enough to keep around. On the historical character behind Mariko. Her dieing rather than being taken hostage is about the only thing that really fits. If you know the book or the history either way you know it had to happen.

How many people need to die in this episode to be considered worthy of the Crimson Sky title? In the beginning of the episode, Lady Mariko's guards when they were prevented from leaving the castle, the guards that were either killed in their sleep or killed as the intruders entered their compound? Both literal and metaphorical deaths have made the sky darken with their blood, hence, Crimson Sky. The silence from the Badd Medicine crew as soon as the show credits started rolling was everyone's reaction when the episode first aired. Great reaction and discussion afterwards. Yeah when the episode aired everyone was shocked at how Mariko went out but not surprised that she did die, considering how much she's wanted it throughout the show. Toranaga did give her the choice in the previous episodes. He has also been testing her on whether would she do her duty and serve him, or if she drop those duties for John. Which is what the episode of him sending John to the tea house and having her go along as translator was. The thing to remember is that every choice and decision Toranaga has made has been calculated and deliberate. So everyone else thought Crimson Sky was a big battle plan but we see now it was actually Mariko. It's the reason she shows up in this episode wearing red. Sometimes in chess you sacrifice the queen in order to win.

To further expound upon the phrase in Episode 2, "you can't play their games." At this time in Japanese culture the inability to fulfill one's duty brings disgrace onto the person (note when Mariko's son says, "if you are disgrace" before saying he would not be her son). However, Toronaga, Mariko, and all the spectators know that it is also disgraceful to prevent someone from fulfilling their duties; so they share the disgrace (note Ochiba's statement to the Regents, "She will die to be free of the disgrace that has burdened her" [both the recent disgrace and the disgrace from her father's actions] "And then all of Osaka will be disgraced for letting her die.") In addition, there is a cultural reciprocity implied, if her disgrace was severe enough for seppuku, then those who caused the disgrace would also be expected to commit sepuku to atone for their role (recall Tadayoshi offering to commit seppuku AND end his bloodline because he insinuated Ishido insulted Toronaga). Since it was on Ishido's orders, Ishido is ultimately the one who "should" atone for the disgrace his orders caused. Essentially, Toronaga exploited Ishido's brash abuse of authority of his position to ignore societal boundaries. Mariko, by announcing her lord's order for her to return, caused a predictable chain of events that Ishido was too proud to prevent by letting her leave. The expectation that one must do their duty/job still carries over into Japanese culture today. As does the expectation that you don't knowingly prevent someone from doing their duty/job. Disgrace doesn't result in seppuku, but it is still unacceptable.

I really love that you let the moment sink in first before doing your discussion. This has been my silent criticism of the channel for as long as I've been watching you guys. I hope you take kindly this unsolicited advice, but for future reactions which ends on emotional and impactful scenes such as this, it would be nice to get a second or two of pause, like you did on this one, just a bit of breather for you, the hosts, to let the emotions steep and stew, and also for us, the viewers, cause even though we have seen the movie or show already we're still reliving the moment when we watch with you guys. Sometimes jumping straight to the discussions can be a bit jarring and destroys the moment of it all.

Without any spoilers, the author literally changed names of the historical people involved to have some freedom with his characters and not having to adhere too strictly to the historic example.

Crimson Herring! By the way, this is fiction based on historical events. Characters are renamed and based on people who lived at this specific time period at the end of sengoku jidai; and events do not necessarily track 100% with history. Example, some people who do not interact in life interacted in the book/show. Time gets condensed and/or accelerated etc etc

I think based on the cutscenes left in, you might have missed the most pivotal target of Mariko/Toranaga's manipulation. This show is presented with a lot of Japanese sensibility and intrigue. I am looking forward to seeing what you would think of the ending.

Did you notice she referred to herself as Akechi Mariko and not Toda Mariko in honour of her father. The real Mariko actually ordered her servant to kill her to prevent her capture. Her death helped the cause. Your shouting then stunned silence at Mariko's death was typical of literally every reactor. Both her suicide scene and her death brought tears to my eyes

They can't 86 the ones that wanted to leave... because then it would be obvious why and Ishido would lose... he doesnt have more power than the high families or the other Regents. And a cowardly mafia move would completely isolate Ishido... But he COULD quietly have them kidnapped and claim the left early in the morning. The others that were killed were just guards, entourage, who happened to wake up and call out a warning. If it was a noble theyd have their own room. Special note: as her last act of defiance, Toda Mariko declared her heritage: Akechi Mariko... a heritage she had been trying to escape for so long... her father who committed treason to slay the Taiko's father to save Japan... and I'd like to believe that she finally understood WHY her father did what he did.

I love how much you like this show but you have something wrong. This series is as historical as Braveheart is. James Clavell based some of the characters on historical figures but that's it. Shogun is a work of fiction. The writer of this remake made it more realistic when it comes to Japanese society but and changed a couple of things but that's it.

In the Shogun saga BOOK series, there are six novels. I'm hoping that there'll be at least six seasons to the TV series! Obviously the shows aren't exactly the same as the books but I've always enjoyed each entity for their own special and unique qualities. In other words I'm fine if the movies don't follow the books exactly. The books are absolutely amazing and will always be number one regardless of what movies are shows they make from them. So why not enjoy them? James Clavell is a genius❤ Great reaction boys!🎎🍶🏯🇯🇵⛩️

Hey, if you want to see cannons with chain and ball depicted on screen, then you need to watch the Showtime series "The Borgias". The campaign for Lombardy (Naples/South of Italy) by the King of Spain shows the use of chain and ball to great and gristly effect. Also one kick-ass series from yesteryear in terms of historical politics and warfare European-style.
