Badd Medicine here and its reaction time
Shōgun follows the collision of two ambitious men from different worlds, John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), a risk-taking English sailor who ends up shipwrecked in Japan, a land whose unfamiliar culture will ultimately redefine him; Lord Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada), a shrewd, powerful daimyo, at odds with his own dangerous, political rivals; and Lady Mariko, a woman with invaluable skills but dishonorable family ties, who must prove her value and allegiance.

19:05 I’m pretty sure that’s “nattō” (納豆) Nattō is a dish consisting of fermented soy beans. It’s well known for being quite pungent, and having a “mucus-like” slime that develops as part of the fermentation. Its popularity makes it a bit like Japan’s version of Marmite - you either love it or you hate it.

Natto is supposed to be kept in a fridge. Fresh out of fridge, there is little smell. You don't wanna put Natto in a room temperature especially in summer.

Something to know, John speaks Portuguese, Dutch and English. Many of his insults are spoken in English which Mariko does not know. She only knows Portuguese as for foreign languages. It is his way of letting out his frustrations that no one can understand. It makes it difficult to translate that in the show when they use English for Portuguese and don't tell us that he is speaking in a different language.. Something else they didn't portray in this series is that Jon receives a translation book from Father Alvito at the request of Toranaga.
@aleatharhea

Mario speaks Japanese, Portuguese, and Latin. John also speaks Latin. Sometimes, they switch to Latin, when there might be someone listening who speaks Portuguese or when they want to speak the language of love.

6:20 "koku" is a measurement of rice, considered enough to feed one person for an entire year. The feudal Japanese economy was based on rice, and rice was bought and sold the way we trade stocks in the stock market today. In addition, noble lords were ranked on how many koku their land could produce. To become a daimyo a lord would need to control 10,000 koku a year.

Kiku is a courtesan (a mix of entertainer and prostitute) with her own ambitions. Her contract is owned by a other woman that hire her out to "entertain". Funny detail in historical japan some of the best spies and some times even assassins in that time where courtesans as they are part of the background and are mostly ignored. Also most partners / customers lower their guard when with them.

The food was 'natto', which is still a food eaten today. Fermented soy beans. Slimy, pungent, it's a culturally acquired taste, like Root Beer is for Americans, or Vegemite for Australians. Foreigners rarely appreciate the strong taste. But it's very, very healthy for you, apparently.
@pacio49

This show is a miniseries. It covers James Clavell's novel, "Shōgun" in a decent adaptation. The book is much more dense and packed with side quests, and lots of the minor characters who only appear in an episode or two in the series are actually much larger players off screen. (The woman who said "Should have used cheaper sake"? Omi's mother. In the books she is shown to be the mastermind behind Omi's manipulations of Toranaga's son. Here, she has a throwaway punchline.) But the series begins where the novel begins, and it ends exactly where the novel ends. This period in Japanese history leads to the biggest battle of Feudal Japan ever, the Battle of Sekigahara, where the historical figure that Toranaga is based on (Tokugawa Ieyasu) rose to power. For a Japanese audience, they understand perfectly exactly who is going to live and die and how things will turn out, because there are many stories which deal with the Battle of Sekigahara and the politics immediately before it and afterwards, when Edo Period Japan came to the forefront. So Japanese people aren't surprised by the historical figures and their fates. The same way that modern audiences watching Titanic knew all of the details of how the ship sank AND which passengers survived and which died. The novel explains the "how did Tokugawa get to Sekigahara" politics. It is meant to zoom in on that contest specifically. Clavell was imitating the body of Japanese historical novels and plays which do precisely that. Everyone knows how it's going to end, so the real point of the show and the artistry is to illuminate humanity and tell the tale of how we ended up where History played out. No spoilers for those of us obviously not aware of the history. But in general, the best rule for getting the most out of this series the first time through is: Pay attention specifically to the Journey. The destination is already written in history and cannot be changed. But how we arrive there? THAT is the genius of Clavell.
@pacio49
@pacio49 Месяц назад
Also, just FYI - Shogun tells the story that begins the Edo Period. The Last Samurai tells 'a' story that ends the Edo Period. (And Hiroyuki Sanada features in both!)

Interesting how most of the episode's reactions and comments focused on "natto" and Kiku. The big reveal here was Fuji-sama's actress (Hoshi Moeka) scene with her pointing the gun at Omi. Mariko WAS the courtesan that Fuji-sama arranged for Anjin. As his courtesan, Fuji runs his house and is responsible to care for him. It would not be unreasonable for her to select a temporary courteson whom Anjin would accept. As a single woman, it would not be unusual for Mariko to serve as the courtesan. It is also expected that they would not plainly speak of the arrangement (in Japan they live the phrase "what is understood doesn't need to be said"). Even to this day, it is uncouth to speak bluntly in Japan. You speak around the topic. In Japan, "the courtesan was acceptable?" is the same thing as Austin Powers saying, "I shagged her rotten!" In this show, Ishido is the only one to whom the rules don't apply. His plain speach in Episode 1 was socially insulting, his direct accusation multiplied the offense. That is why Tadayoshi reacted so aggressively. However, Tadayoshi "losing his cool" is also an social insult (even in defense of his lord's pride), particularly when Toronaga is just taking the face punches, and Tadayoshi's sepuku was Toronaga taking the "Higher-ground" in the disagreement. You'll recall the priest in prison that told John, "You're a child in the wilderness, you don't know their games...You can't play their game, their rules are too opaque, their hearts too guarded."

Very cute you gents called natto a cheese something before John did 😂😂 Natto is one of my favorite little Japanese foods and extremely cheap. When I was an exchange student, my host mom served it at every meal with different add ins ranging from Okura to tiny fish to spring onion and a whole bunch of other varieties I can’t recall. I settled on ground up sesame seed with umeboshi (pickled plum) as my favorite combo. It is a divided food even among Japanese people (my host family was split 50/50 on it 😂) but it is incredibly healthy. IF you can get your hands on some, I recommend you try some over a bowl of rice

@Baddmedicine, 18:36 What John is eating is called natto, fermented beans. Natto isn't for everyone, but it's said to be easy on the stomach. It smells pretty bad, but I guess John's description isn't far from the truth. EDIT: 27:52 Don't look at the Japanese characters with a Western point of view--they weren't brought up in that culture, so they don't understand it--they come from a culture with very rigid customs; everyone knows their place and they stay in their lane. Filial piety is at the core of South East Asian culture, and at this time in history one's family and family's rank is supremely loyal to one's lord, and their lord is equally devoted to their lord as we've seen in this series, particularly this episode. Fuji, John's consort, wants to die. Yet she can't. She's obeying her lord's order, which is to be John's companion for 6 months. Mariko too wants to die, but she can't. She's been ordered to live. Both Fuji and Mariko are haunted by the misdeeds of their husband and father respectively, and they should have died along with them to right the sins, but they've been spared--and neither wants it. Still, they are duty-bound to follow the commands of their lord, and they will do it, as that is their way. Despite Fuji's feelings about John and the role she has to play, she put her life on the line to protect him and his weapons. She told him that she would, and she did so without a second thought. She meant what she said, and it would be foolish to test her--the same goes for everyone else in this story who is Japanese, as they all live by a similar honor-bound code. While this series has a predominate Japanese cast, it is made for Western audiences and John is their guide into Japanese culture. You will more likely understand John than any other character, and that's the way it's supposed to be. You likely share his frustrations and feel confused by the actions and motives of others. Just keep in mind that Japan is a country with little to no Western influence. Yes, the Portuguese have brought Christianity to Japan, but this series has shown you how most characters feel about it in this series. Oddly enough, in modern Japan, not much has changed on that front. Christianity has been in Japan for over 500 years and it still barely has a presence. Modern Japan has been changed by the West, but it is still very much Japan. And in a lot of ways, it is very much like you see in this series, minus the instant death, of course. Does John want to return to England? You heard him yourself. He said he left England before his daughter was born. He left for a life at sea because it offered him freedom. Even now, he keeps asking for his men and ships so that he can return to the seas. Mariko wants freedom too, but not the freedom you think. She wants to be free of life, but she's stuck. Her faith tells her that it is wrong to take her life, and her culture demands that she must. She's lost, yet still devoted to her lord, Toranaga.

Natto is fermented soy beans. Even for the Japanese, it is an acquired taste. Kiku is not Omi's wife. She is a courtesan....basically a high class "escort". She is hired out to top guests because she is the most beautiful and "accomplished". And you are correct Answer, England does not experience the natural disasters that plague the US. It would have been quite a shock for John to experience an earthquake. I am excited for you to react to the other episodes. I am rewatching them.....a third time because you miss things the first time and even the second. Yabushige is such a weasel but I can't hate him he's just too damn funny and entertaining. I would bet that this is a one and done show as there were no sequel books to Shogun although the same author, James Clavell wrote many Asia based novels like Tai Pan, King Rat, Gai Jin, Noble House and the list goes on. It seems in the two minutes since I made this edit I saw a report that Hiroyuki Sanada has signed up for Shogun Season 2. So they are going to forge ahead without any previously written books from the author. Game of Thrones did that and it didn't turn out well. I fear for Season 2.

If I were in John's position, i would be doing everything i could to speak that language as fluently as possible. In a place with this many machinations and schemers all vying for power, not being able to speak the language is like going into a swordfight with no weapons or clothes. Yes, he has a translator, but as she's made him perfectly aware, she will only relay information to and from him that is to her lord's benefit.

The outcome of the effort would determine whether Shōgun would be considered a limited or drama series going forward, which could have major ramifications on the 2024 Emmy race, with the timing of the decision tied to the deadline for Emmy submissions.

@@paganheart70 ok that is new. But it was still concepted as a limited show. And I'm actually not looking forward to a potential season 2. Problem is they have next to no source material to work with. The book it is based on is done. The area after Shogun is quite literal peaceful isolation and unchallanged rule for the clan that won. The only thing they potentially could do is either a prequel (and prequels fail more often than not) or an anthology show (but then Toronaga makes no sense). Also one Star is far from the whole team. The problem is they set the production up for it being a limieted show. So no one on the show had a contract with a return option. So many will already have other obligations by now. But let's assume they get the core team back together it will be a long wait. Since they start at square Zero. They have to basically treat a season 2 or a prequel or whatever as if it was a new show. Since nothing is written, no production cycle is prepeared and so forth. Both from an organisational and a creative stance it might be better to make a new show under a new title than to call whatever comes next season 2. Would give them more room to alter stuff/actors etc. as needed.

@@BobHerzog1962 Yeah, news just announced. I agree with you on all your points. But it does have a lot going for it too. All the production teams have been found and developed, they have saved time with this first series being such a success. Hulu/FX will probably be willing to throw trucks of money at it based on its success. Others in the on-screen team have expressed interest in it continuing in interviews (Cosmo, Ana, Marks/Kondo). Sanada knows the Toranaga/Tokugawa character, he has played Tokugawa Ieyasu in past productions, he knows the history. Clavell's daughter is an executive producer and she controls all rights to his books, she runs that company. So maybe there is something in his notes that could provide a guideline to a season 2 (that is a complete guess on my part). Or maybe she would contribute to a new story. Yes, it would be a very long wait. I think i read that it took like 11 years to get this current series from first idea to air date. And Clavell took 5 years to research and write the book. Just because it would take a long time is not a reason not to do it. Now, who would write it? I have no clue. I am sure Sanada and Marks/Kondo and others would all be a part. I would love to see them do it, even if it takes years to come to fruition.

They're pulling much of the dialog straight from the book. So if you're impressed with the writing, you're impressed with the book. I'm impressed with how little they're changing the book. It's unfolding very quickly because that is one fat book, but they're not significantly changing it. The screenplay adaptation is very good, along with, as you say, the directing, costumes, location, sets, acting, and so on. There are a few differences, but they're for expedience and don't harm the narrative. For instance, Yabushige, who had that man boiled alive, wasn't just interested in what happens at the moment of death. He was a true sadist, got off on listening to the screams, and through regulating the fire, made it last all night. You're making some assumptions about characters that aren't true according to the book, but I won't say anything because the script may clarify in its own time; I haven't watched the whole series yet and don't wanna drop any spoilers.

12:00 the English had way better canons, they could be much more precise and efficient than most other nations. So that's nice that the Japanese lords who already knew about european canons thought they couldn't be accurate at long range because they never came across english ones.

If she had talked about tsunami instead of earthquake, tsunami is a japanese word so i doubt he would've know right away what that was either.

"Tsunami" isn't the Japanese word for earthquake. A tsunami is a destructive wave caused by an earthquake. The modern Japanese word for earthquake is jishin (地震).

@@Garbowhat I didn't misread the sentence, you miswrote it. Here I'll help you, "She didn't use tsunami because it is a Japanese word and it isn't the word for earthquake." The semantic and implicature of your sentence is that you are equating the Japanese word tsunami with the English word earthquake. I'm afraid it is you who is not admitting the mistake, a mistake that isn't a big deal, but you made it into one for yourself. Gaslighting! Ok. Again, if you don't understand the nature of the semantics and pragmatics of your sentence even now, good luck to you.

The guy on the right needs to try harder with the names…it’s been 4 eps now and calling main characters the lady plantin da seeds and blowing off looking at you notes just leaves a bad taste. Like what’s your notepad for? there’s a subtitles and everything spelled out…you know they would’ve gotten it by now if it was Western names or at least tried … Just leave the bad taste on the channel 🤨

🔥 I do love this show but I didn't like that John and lady M got together. I don't think it was necessary. I wish they would have just kept it at flirting. In a land full of Asian men the white knight story is not necessary. No offense.

Their relationship is a very important dynamic that highlights the show's key themes especially when it comes to the culture clash between the West and East. You see Mariko explain a lot of the Japanese culture whenever John feels so lost and alienated abt their rituals and beliefs... Their arguments/dialogues with each other actually make the show rich which only manifests how this show grounds itself in great writing and does not rely on spectacle. If you're viewing this relationship as merely a romance, then that's a very superficial understanding.

For all Japanese names.....Surname/family name is first, Given name is second. Yoshii (family name) Toranaga (first/given name). etc...... Also, the -gun in Shogun is not pronounced like gun in English, it is more like a quick softer -goon, listen to how the Japanese actors say it and you should/will notice the difference.
