According to Japanese news, Ohtani's family has never touched his money. Even when Ohtani offered to rebuild his family home, his parents said, "We're still healthy, and the house isn't that old, so that's not how you should spend your money. Save it properly." His mother still works part-time, and their lifestyle hasn't changed at all from old days. When his mentor and sister got married, Ohtani tried to give them a big gift, but they didn't accept it. Ohtani himself doesn't spend money on anything other than baseball; it's clear that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

some people probably think Ohtani picking up litter in the dugout and on the field is a bit obsessive, but elementary schools in Japan have no janitors - the children do ALL the cleaning in the school including the washrooms. Japanese kids are taught very young to take responsibility and not expect others to clean up for them or after them. Look at the streets in Japanese towns and cities - they are as clean as an indoor mall, not even a speck of trash or litter anywhere.

That chair thing was so refreshing to see. Elementary school kids are taught to push their chairs back under the desk (or however they found it) after using it. By the middle of first grade it's almost automatic for them and they carry this up to adulthood. So nice to see Shohei instinctively put the swivel chair back in place after his interview. 😀

I’m Japanese and these comments are making me cry. I’ve never heard Japanese people praises for Japanese. When we talk about us we always compare ourselves with people from another culture and say like “Japanese are too serious” “we should be more like people outside of Japan” “that is too Japanese (it’s usually used as a bad meaning, like too honest or too thoughtful)” etc. but seeing people outside of Japan saying something so nice about Japanese culture is really touching and makes me realized that we can proud of our culture little bit more.

Please be proud of your culture! There are many worldwide who envy Japan’s cleanliness, safety, lack of crime, safe and reliable public transit including your train system, proper respectfulness to one another, strong work ethic and perseverance. How everybody is proud of their job and do their job to the best of their ability. I have hardly ever met an arrogant Japanese person as I think your culture does not encourage that type of attribute. Japanese people abroad are very much respected by others. I would love to visit Japan one day! Although you have such a large population in such a small land area, you still have beautiful nature areas. It seems to me that the environment is treated with respect in Japan. One of the most obvious compliments I can pay is how high tech Japan is. And I haven’t even started to talk about the food yet! You must have very high standards for each other in your culture and maybe that is where the criticism comes from. It’s possible to offer constructive criticism while at the same time acknowledging the positive characteristics of the person or the situation. Best wishes! 😃🙏🌸⚾️
