April , 23, 2021---------She WILL BE a legend dear @MGH cnsGASBA!!! There is a performance of the Mendelssohn in the site of the University Birkent, Turkey (2008, 13 years ago!) where UNIQUE Sayaka Shoji, with a smaller orchestra played an incredible Mendelsshon !!! In that recording Sayaka played the Joachin Strad and is closed miked (revealing loits of wonderful things in her playing!), with lots of closeups video takes of her wonderful face expression,! Her playing in that venue is a milestone for me, and Sayaka REALLY REVEALED the Mendelssohn ! Greetings from Brazil !

Without any doubt Ms. Sayaka Shoji is the undisputed best violinist in the world in since 1999 ( Paganini award ). The audience can follow and understand her emotional journey - just by looking at her face as she plays with incredible technical skill. Dear Sayaka, :-) you are the music you play and thank you for such a mastery.

I absolutely love ALL her playing including the wonderful Brahms concerto. Who cares how she holds her elbow, to get that wonderful sound...she won the Paganini Competition as a teen-ager (first and only). Who knows - maybe she needed to hold it that way as a kid to control the strings. Her playing is one of a kind!

John Sankey Not correct at all about the fourth finger, but I agree with the other comment about the unattractive way her upper left arm hugs her body.
@rafaelrangel1677
@rafaelrangel1677 8 лет назад
John Sankey The observation is correct. Most of upper notes she plays, the highest ones, she uses the third finger instead of the fourth, which is basically a rule for any violin student. But she past all that stuffs and she feel more confortable and sharpy with her third fingers, it's all up to her then. Dind't you check out the way how she vibrates with that finger? Almost a thrill..

The position of her left elbow is a serious flaw. The height is not the problem. She has her whole left arm shifted toward her right arm. It is a fairly common flaw and it is done because the violinist mistakenly feels he (or she) can more easily reach things that are difficult to reach. I once heard David Oistrakh say an amazing thing. He said that the violin and the accordion have something in common. With both instruments, the farther apart your elbows are, the bigger and stronger the sound you can make. For sure, when Oistrakh played, there was a wonderful wide feeling about him.You may notice that this flaw is exaggerated when she has to reach for something, or when she is in the higher positions.In her case it's really weird because she has big hands and reaching for things that are hard to reach is one of her strengths. As she gets older she will have all kinds of physical problems (pain) unless she corrects this problem. Also, she raises her right shoulder as she approaches the frog on upbows, and this will add to her problems as she gets older. Hopefully, she will come to realize that raising her right elbow, not the shoulder, is the way to go. It is remarkable that with those two serious technical flaws she plays as spectacularly well as she does. There is one serious musical problem that she has as well. Not in the Mendelssohn concerto, but in her performance of the Beethoven concerto and the Bach unaccompanied sonatas and partitas she has bought into the horrible notion that these works should be played as some people believe they were played three centuries ago. The horrible "period instrument" folks. I cannot listen to Bach and Beethoven when played without vibrato, feeling and intelligence. THIS MUSIC DOES NOT BELONG IN A MUSEUM! It is as live and relevant and beautiful and dramatic today as it was the day it was written. It is performed by today's musicians for today's audiences and playing it the way you think it was played 300 years ago instead of the way you feel it now is an insult to this great music. Hopefully this tasteless fad will pass.
@johnsankey9568
@johnsankey9568 8 лет назад
John Graeler Oistrakh is a male: his comments about elbows don't apply to female shoulders. For us males, shoulder tension is the killer; for women, they have to focus much more on the wrist. Look at her playing: from top to bottom her wrist stays relaxed and in almost the same position. Any tension kills the sound of a fiddle. All we can do is to minimize all of it, in every way, as much as we can.
@johngraeler894
@johngraeler894 8 лет назад
John Sankey I'm 74 years old, and your comment would have been valid when I was a kid. In fact, at that time it was pretty much believed that women simply would never be able to play as well as men. They were smaller and weaker and they just couldn't do it. Boy! Did that ever turn out to be nonsense!!! If you happened to watch the recently completed Queen Elisabeth and Tchaikovsky violin competitions (the 2 biggest) you might have noticed that women easily outnumbered men and by any standard they played just as well. What women may lack in size, they more than make up for in flexibility. They certainly reach tenths more easily than I ever did. Coming out from under the violin by shifting the elbow to the right IS a serious technical flaw. You won't find any of the women competitors in the major competitions that do that. The wrist is certainly important, and those with big techniques all have relaxed and stable wrists. But that has nothing to do with the position of your elbows. Of the competitors in the Tchaikovsky competition, my favorite was Bomsori Kim. She is tiny (several inches shorter than any other competitor) and her hands are also small, but boy! She does not play small! Watch her play the 24th caprice in the first round of the Tchaikovsky and I think you will see what I mean. No. Shoji Sayaka does not look small to me, and she may have the talent to play around her technical flaw now, but for sure she would play even better if she fixed it. Further, if she doesn't fix it, she is going to have problems as she gets older.
@johnsankey9568
@johnsankey9568 8 лет назад
John Graeler I'm your age; you obviously grew up in a different world from me! No one talked of of weak women in my childhood. The finest violinist and pianist ever produced by St.Catharines were both girls (I knew both, managed to tie with Anahid on piano once but wouldn't have stood a chance against Tania on violin; she was so much younger that we never competed). And, at that time the best fiddle teacher in Canada was a woman at RCT. Women's shoulders are jointed differently than men so their tension focus is different than ours; that's not weakness it's just anatomy. Her left wrist tells me that her arm position works for her and I stand by that.
@johnsankey9568
@johnsankey9568 8 лет назад
John Graeler I might add that the first year I played in the Niagara Symphony, 1950, Joan Rowland bulged the walls with the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto; she made Van Cliburn sound effete. And, about a quarter of the Symphony players then were women, including my mom & Tania's.

She doesn't look happy at all, and the crook of her left arm, with her elbow across her abdomen, only reinforces a sense of tension (she doesn't always hold her violin like this) and yet she plays superbly this wonderful concerto, if not as freely as she might, as though in defiance, almost under duress.

three starz vs 5 stars...not one of the better orchestral recording...sad. um...every performance is different because of many factors...i mean the conductor needs to use his ears a little more sensitively. The ORCHESTRA is verrrry...RUSKIE...bombastic...Mendohlsonn was much more sensitive in his compositions, IMHO...I am grateful for your posting jewuseus..um...a lot of subscribers and I love MAXIM VENGEROV when he deems to play any STRONG violin piece because he has soooo much muscle playing and his mother is not touring with him and he has the legs to keep the strong robusto sound. Um...it is now 2020...i can see 20/20. She is really someone to hear LIVE in person. The nuances are what I cannont pick through the overly strong orchestral FFFFF...they do not quite understand PPPPP...which would help in conveying emotional messagees as a contrast. Don't get me wrong this is okay, just not my fave.by any means...nyet.

I mean even if she plays loud u still need to look more great ya know. I know it is like their own style but in general, the gravity of the bow is pulling to the fingerboard. It would make te person playing the violin a tad bit more uncomfortable to play vs. an easier time just holding the violin up straight.

Shoji, another very nice performance, but not comparable to your Sibelius concerto with Sir Colin Davis and the London Orchestra. In the Sibelius you seemed to influence the emotions of the orchestra and they matched your feelings so well. In this Mendelssohn you took on the stoic, unpleasant look of the orchestra members. No smile until the third movement. No emotion in your face or body language. Not a good thing - I suspect you didn't feel the emotion of the work. You must always show enthusiasm and love for the works you perform - it influences your play. I think you were not pleased with the orchestra or the conductor - maybe both. Hide such emotions - they do not foster good stage presence. The audience did seem to really enjoy your performance though. Remember, ol' Felix was a romantic - he and Jennie Lind had quite a relationship together. Shows in his music. He did write the Wedding March you know..... Well, I still think you're great!

I have been listening for many, many years my friend - and enjoyed the experience most times. Have seen a number of concerts, and many videos - enjoying them all. As for this one - well, I think Shoji Sakawa is a marvelous violinist. Still. I think stage presence has much to do with a performer's impact on the audience, and their perception of the musician(s)' performance. Enthusiasm, melancholy, joy, sadness, tripping the light fantastic are all emotions that are conveyed in the classical music genre - and other genres as well. Watching and listening is different from just listening I think, but I enjoy both. Seeing the orchestra members and soloists react to the score by their body language and facial expressions as well as by their instrumental technique and dexterity tends to reinforce the tone of the composition. Still, it is to each his/her own my friend. I hope you enjoy music as much as I, and thank you again for your comment. Ron

Ron Crooker Personally when it comes to music, I am not very visual inclined..for me it's often a distraction.. concerts are often a disappointment for that reason. I tend to be a bit solipsistic minded every now and then, sorry about that Ron ;-)

quinto34 Only every now and then my friend, else the "self" the composers and performers put into the music you love would not move you so...

不機嫌なのはオケが下手くそすぎたからかな? まあ、わかる気がするよ。Sayakaとはレベルが違いすぎだから。

The technique of holding the violin is too steep, the intonation is perfect, the violin is too big and it seems too heavy...

Sorry to say this. Quite boring performance. So mechanical. The vibrato is of the same speed and intensity throughout. There is not much subtlty in long notes. E.g between second and third movement, the first two phrases were played exactly 100% the same way. If Mendelssohn meant it to be exactly the same he could have just written once. Go listen to many others on you tube and see for yourself.

that encore was a ripoff. she's skips the intro, plays the main theme, skips every variation. i've heard some violinists skip a *couple* of the variations, but this was really pathetic. no flames, please. i'm a fan, i appreciate her talent, but jeez.
