The thing about smelly food is that once you're hook on it, the smell will become good to you, seriously. I love fermented stuff and the smell they deliver 😤. They are good for your gut and packa lots of flavor. Fermented tofu, shrimp paste, fish sauce, other fermented fish sauce, other ferment seafood sauce, lol, and durian- they got nothing on me aside from making me salivate.
What about surstromming? That stuff smells so bad that a German landlord kicked out a tennant for opening a can of surtromming in the hallway and won the following lawsuit after opening a can of the foul stuff in the courtroom.
@@TheRokugoki Let me substantiate that claim. The mashed dried fish from Bengal region is one. Dried fish is boiled then pounded with spices and then sauted with spice oils. It's reletively unknown outside Bengal but it stinks... very bad, but it's also called "rice stealer" because it's so delicious people keep eating them with rice. But people who hate them, hate them passionately
I am so glad I can't smell that stuff. I feel like Nao would use surstromming in a dish and actually manage to make it work despite the infamously horrible smell, the slimy texture, and the really salty flavor.
Akira’s not wrong, there’s more to food than flavor. I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve been enticed by Food’s smell alone. That said, there are exceptions to the Rule. This is a Good Example, just because something on a plate or in a bowl smells horrendous, doesn’t mean it can’t taste good.
Laksa is srsly my fav!!! Its kinda smelly when my mom in the process to cook it haha but it taste better when the broth is freezed in the fridge for few days and you reheat it. The ingredients will come together and it taste better than ever!
Hmm well i'm from borneo (ie: EAST Malaysia) so im generally not a fan of curry laksa. I prefer Sarawak's version which uses more fresh seafood and generally feels cleaner then its western counterpart. Everyone keeps talking about Penang, Johor etc so i needed to show another version of the dish.
Laksa itself isn't pungent at all; in fact it's very appetising. It's the Kusaya variation that is the causes it to smell bad. But even so, Kusaya is supposed to be quite tasty.
Northern laksas like from Penang and Kedah are very much like this. Stinks to high heaven. But other variants like from Johor, Sarawak, the curry and Nyonya style don't. All delicious tho.
If they say the smells bad taste good probably they never tase durian for real idk why but I heard most southeast Asia country food smells bad but tase good 😅😅
I dont recall laksa being a smelly dish. But for me, Laksa is the greatest soup dish i have ever tried. I will be surprised if i try something that taste better than it.
She used unusual ingredients such as Kusaya which is indeed very strong and pungent compare to fishpaste. Original Laksa tend to be spicy and savory due to coconut milk and spices.
I believe the smelly laksa refer to Asam Laksa's condiment which is a sweet black fermented shrimp sauce which have quite the smell and it called "Petis udang" in Malay and "Hae ko" in the Hokkien Chinese dialect.
For me, I don't like that it has a lot of raw herbs and some even have raw onion as topping in Asam Laksa. I feel the same thing about Vietnamese Pho because of the same reason. So, I prefer Curry Laksa/Curry Mee.
I believe they refer to the Asam Laksa not Curry Laksa. Asam Laksa are always accompanied by a sweet black fermented shrimp sauce which have quite the smell and it called "Petis udang" in Malay and "Hae ko" in the Hokkien Chinese dialect.
I believe that is not belacan but a sweet black fermented shrimp sauce which have quite the smell and it called "Petis udang" in Malay and "Hae ko" in the Hokkien Chinese dialect. It is also used in Penang Chee Cheong Fun.
im trying to imagine what horrid stink like unscrubbed toilet this laksa is eminating.....im from south east asia.....one dish that resembles this aura is our Assam Laksa.....a room can be filled with a very strong pungent smell of fish, shrimp paste and tamarinds when this dish is brought in....but ultimately delicious when slurping it down with the broth.... This Jet Black laksa can be equally same to Assam Laksa.....
Well from what I've researched atleast (I haven't tried any of the ingredients that I'm mentioning here) the kusaya brine solution smells like ammonia and those tofu slices she has as toppings are most likely fermented tofu which smells like poo so yeah... Unscrubbed toilet
The judges have been known to be really strict when it comes to scoring (more info found in the anime/manga). The guy that got 6/100 points either must have really screwed up his dish or the judges thought it was far below their tastes.
