Today we’re very proud to present the first video in a new segment on our channel: Shokunin
Shokunin (職人) is the Japanese word for craftsman or craftswoman. These are the men and women who preserve Japan’s traditional legacy of hand-crafting products including swords, drums, fans, pottery and more. Many shokunin use crafting methods that have been passed down for hundreds of years, sometimes within a single family. But because most things can be mass-produced these days, shokunin, and their skills, are disappearing. So, we want to help protect Japan’s historical arts by spreading awareness and broadening their market within Japan and overseas.

Being a new shokunin can be really difficult in a lot of ways. If you enjoyed watching Yamaguchi-san work and have a word or two of support for her (in Japanese), you can comment or send her a message on her blog: ameblo.jp/amezaiku-aichi/ I think she would really appreciate it!

That's awesome! I had no idea that candy sculpture was even a thing! I'm really looking forward to future segments! You guys just make Japan seem more and more interesting with every video you post, and I didn't even think that was possible! that's awesome you guys are showing some of Japan's traditional crafts. I've always wondered if any of those old craftsmen and women still existed that created the handmade fans and hair accessories or the old style paintings. Even in America a lot of our handmade crafts like soap making and making your own spices and things are disappearing. thank you for doing this series Now When I visit Japan I'll be sure to look for a lot of these traditional crafts.

One of my favorite experiences was when I was in Disney World in Florida, at the "Japan" part of Epcot, I got to watch a women do this. She was so very sweet and nice, and she took pictures with me and let me take pictures of her candy. It was very nice.

+Ashley Smith Ah, I was in Epcot, too! I never got to see this being done, though. However, I did see a big performance with Taiko, and I spoke a lot with the people who ran a shop in the lower part of a building designed to look like a temple.

I don't usually comment on videos, but this time I simply have to. It's a brilliant video! Propably my favorite from all the Japan related videos on youtube. Not only does it show something that I had no idea existed, but it does it in a wonderful way. Showing the story behind the craftsman (or woman in this case). It's great that you found somethig about Japan to show us that (at least I belive so) any other jvlogger didn't.

I'm already madly in love with this segment, these parts of Japanese culture are part of why I want to learn more about Japan!! I hate seeing beautiful traditions disappear, this probably sounds weird but I teared up watching a video about how samurai katakana were traditionally made because it showed and explained how there are very few who still know how to make them...in the future there is a possibility that there will be no one left who know how to create these beautiful artworks

This will likely be my favorite segment from you two! I love Japan. I especially love the simple elegance of traditional East Asian (Japanese) culture. I like the kind of things you don't see in mainstream media - the kind that is rarely, if ever, advertised and not many people know about, especially foreigners. It's always sad to see traditional aspects of a culture be swept away in the tide of globalization and industrialization, so your efforts to bring awareness to them makes me really happy! I look forward to future segments.
