Shooting and Punching Holes Thru Steel - Is that possible? Swiss Powder

Trying my luck punching holes thru 1/8 inch steel using Swiss FFF powder. 99.9% of the time I use the ramrod installed with the gun. I break that golden rule on this one by using modern equipment to load those super tight loads. Enjoy:

Makes me wonder what a .69 roundball out of a Brown Bess and 110 grains of FFG powder (that was the standard load for the British) would do. This reminds me of the makeshift armor that the Continental forces was using during the Battle of Valcour Island in October 1776. Benedict Arnold's makeshift fleet of gunboats had armor made of fascines, thick sticks bundled together tightly and hung from the rigging to protect the gun crews from musket and gun fire from the shoreline by Mohawks fighting with the British. The stuff was for the most part, fairly effective even up to larger calibers.

Great fun video! I used a sign similar to that once for experimentation, an old steel bridge marker sign to be exact, with my Pietta Remington .44 percussion revolver loaded with round ball and 30 grains 3Fg. I started at ten yards from the target and moved out ten yards further with each shot. At fifty yards, it was still punching holes all the way thru the metal but not as forcefully as compared to the closer range holes.

The ironic thing about hunting is that we will stress over the construction of a center fire bullet and fancy optics, but that old round ball pushed by Holy Black over iron sights is more than sufficient for a clean kill. Greetings from an undisclosed area near "Mayberry." Have a blessed day and a great Independence Day (thats what it should be called, not the 4th of July). It certainly is. Back in 1993 one of our club members wanted a Black powder shoot ( we mostly shot 22 rimfire ) and he made a ball splitting target, with an axe head welded to a pole with four 1/8" steel lugs welded on to hold a paper target on each side of the blade. He gave me the honour of the first shot at this contraption at 25yds. I pulled the shot slightly left and high and that one shot demolished the complete target setup and the 200gr 52cal round ball made a beautiful hole through the top left bracket. I just turned around to him and said "What next?" 🤣 The poor man couldn't speak for a while and later presented me with a trophy of the plate mounted on a wooden base with the legend 'One shot kill on a target frame' engraved on the front. I still have it. 😁

@@blackpowdermaniacshooter No worries man. You had fun punching steel here! 🤣 My caplock rifle was hand made by me in 1982, all excepting the nipple and the barrel was just a drilled out, 24" long 22-250 varmint weight barrel tapered octagonal. I used it as a smooth bore for ten years, then decided to ream it smooth to .52 diameter, didn't improve its accuracy just made it worse, so decided to cut rifle it with a crude bench mounted jig that included a boat winch dragging a twisted piece of 10mm square steel through a square hole, attached to a rod with a single point cutter on it. Grooves are rough at the bottom, but it will put two balls cutting each other at 50yds, if I do my bit. 😁

@44DoctorMike
@44DoctorMike Год назад
@@flintandball6093 Even the most perfect load will not hit the mark if the shooter is not using optimal body mechanics while shooting. Don't let the butt plate slide on the shoulder as you are firing, keep anchored. Trigger control, should I say it again, Trigger control. Don't slap the trigger , don't push the trigger from the side, Don't jerk the trigger. A slow steady pull straight back keeping the pull inline with the rifle front to back. Don't twist the rifle as you fire. Don't look over your sights as soon as you pull the trigger. Follow through. Try to be looking at your target the same way as you did before you pulled the trigger. Don't suddenly grip the gun with either hand as you are pulling the trigger. Be a statue as your were before you pulled the trigger. If your gun was sighted in then don't change your sight picture from shot to shot. All of these things apply whether you are shooting off hand or from the bench. Ephesians 4: 4. There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; 5. One Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6. One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
