Maybe you try to mill a cone shape into that anvil you fill with the explosives 👍🏻
@theschurrll
@theschurrll 5 лет назад
Forget the cone shape! Maybe you should drill a hole into the floor of one anvil. I would try to go down to the middle. I would try a diameter of 15 to 20 mm. After a depth of about the quarter you should hollow the inside in a bottle shape. The fill it up with the gunpowder that worked best 😁👍🏻 Hope you try this, because i‘m curious if that works

In rural areas especially poorer ones, it was a common way to signal for help. It is called " ringing the anvil and usually is accomplished using a pound of black powder for an anvil . Apparently a single pound of gunpowder was cheaper than buying a town bell.

I believe slower burning powder combined with a much better seal will give you better results. Slower powder pushes heavy projectiles better which is why it is used in higher caliber cartridges.

You might want to go with solid rocket design. Generally, with solid rockets, wider rockets give longer burn, while longer rockets give higher pressure. So I would suggest that you try a deeper and circular hole. Do fill it, but keep a hole through the center of the grain (powder fill. And put the initiator charge in the bottom of the hole. This will allow optimal pressure build up. Of course you could then put a throat to chocke the flow and get higher pressure. But that's making a solid rocket out of an anvil and nobody in its right mind would do that, right?
@brianfranson7399
@brianfranson7399 3 года назад
I think you need to slow down the explosion with slower explosive so the explosion pressure has time to work on the anvil. The explosion power is used up before pushing the anvil up. Sincerely just a guess. Good luck

You have to epoxy the two anvils together. Epoxy has incredible holding strength when bonding two machined steel surfaces. Allows for incredible pressure to build before the epoxy fails and launches the anvil.

He did several things wrong--old cast iron anvils, too much powder, no safety equipment, and he was not nearly far enough away--and the anvils shattered, sending shrapnel flying in all directions. A small chunk of one of them pierced his chest and that was it for him. He'd launched the anvils about 8 or 9 times prior to the last blast. Very cool to watch, though!

Finer powder = more surface area = faster burn, up to a point. Large gains = less area = slower burn...until the grains get smaller and burn faster! The 'ideal' situation sees the anvils starting to move apart just as the pressure is reaching maximum. Black powder muskets have to be 'tuned' to the powder they are burning for this very reason. An 'ideal' burn with muskets is to have bore pressure still climbing just as the bullet is leaving the muzzle. Accelerate that bullet all the way down the tube. If the pressure spikes too soon, the bullet will be slowing down in the barrel after the pressure spike has dissipated. If the pressure spikes to late, the bullet doesn't pick up much speed and most of the powder is wasted out the muzzle. Loose black powder, in a confined space, tends to explode rather than burn; every muzzle-loading gun requires firm compression of the powder charge to prevent barrel explosions. I am guessing that a medium-coarse 'cannon powder' would be groovy, but you would need to find a safe way to compress the powder charge into the anvil recess. Not super compressed, but enough to close the bigger gaps between the powder grains. The flame front moving through the charge should burn through the grains, and not around them! BTW, smokeless powders would be of no help here, they require massive [20+ bars] pressures to burn fast enough. Hmmm, fast black-powder to build pressure/heat fast, slower smokeless powder to maintain/build the pressure spike...hybrid charges may not be according to Hoyle...space program...

That's probably why in mining, they use a fast explosive to fracture a rockface but a slower moving one to push it out of the way. The slow stuff apparently has more "shove" .. I think Adam and Jamie learned this in one of their big explosion episodes.

Hmmm. About you orienting the anvils with the thinner sections to each side: That means that should the anvils break, the explosive force goes to the sides, but one of the heavy halves of the anvils could fly straight at you. Obviously, you had special effects specialists working with you, so hopefully my theory is wrong.
