Sad how we never get to see Bobby's shooting expertise beyond this episode. Kid's honestly pretty talented with his numerous skills in guns, comedy, and beef analysis at the end of the series.
There are a few episodes where it comes back up, but they definitely could've done more with it. Same with Luanne's mechanic skills, that was just suddenly dropped early on
I love how this episode shows Hank being the one who feels weak and vulnerable rather than the “I know what I’m doing and I’m always right” attitude that later episodes had.
Honestly I like that King of the Hill pretty much shows that there’s a difference between the Hills who like shooting sports and can possibly value self defense. And then there’s Dale, who pretty much begs for a chance to shoot someone.
I like this episode- I think it's important to teach your child about firearms and firearm safety and allow them to shoot to see if it's something they're interested in. I'd rather my kid hated guns but understood how to be safe, and render a loaded firearm as safe as opposed to having no exposure and either being afraid of them or seeing them as something "cool" when they get older- and by that I mean, they see it as something you pose with for pictures or in general treat inappropriately and use firearms recklessly.
I think what they were trying to do with Bobby was have him overcompensate. At the beginning Hank is disappointed with Bobby's behavior and lack of skill until they get to the guns, and Hank even tells Peggy that he and Bobby don't have a lot to bond over because Bobby 'isn't good at much' - not that they don't have a lot in common, meaning Bobby is used to seeing his dad as good at everything and also used to seeing his dad disappointed in his own lack of ability. When Hank calls off the competition Bobby assumes it's his fault, he assumes his dad is quitting because he himself isn't good enough, so all this winner talk and emphasis on winning I see more as Bobby 1) assuming they will win because his dad is the best at everything and he won't let himself bring their team down 2) general motivational phases Hank has said in the past ("you taught me that") and 3) trying to convince his dad that he, Bobby, can do this Notice the times Bobby assures Hank that they'll win - it's whenever Hank tries to say it's ok if they don't do well. We know Hank is talking about himself, but I think Bobby thinks that Hank thinks they will lose because of Bobby's performance, so all the winning talk is Bobby telling his dad 'dont worry, I got this'
Best thing my dad ever did was get me into shootin when I was really young. Got me into teaching rifle instruction for a bit and I really enjoyed that. Kept me from becoming afraid of em while understanding and respecting em
This episode was my absolute favorite, growing up when I saw this episode on I just dropped everything and watched. Must be a sense of nostalgia and how Hank and Bobby are bonding :)
Hank saying he doesn't want a cats in the cradle moment later in life is really really sweet to me Also, you've got yellow blue colorblindness? I have green red. Together we could see color correctly and finally take over the world.
My roommate got me a sketch of Dale from Joel Adams with "guns don't kill people, the government does" quoted on it. She didn't know my favorite Dale quote so she asked for something conspiracy theory related. When I told her that my favorite Dale quote was "underwear, money, fat" she was glad about her choice.
Too bad they really didn't do a lot more follow up after this. Sure bobby got to go deer hunting but that wasn't much about guns and more about how difficult it was to hunt The generation divide is also fun to see from cotton to bobby
@@KewneRain it's funny that the propane job Hank talks about did become true as bobby was great at grilling and knowing how to see good meat at a glance near the end. Guess bobby was listening more than Hank thought even early on
I worked at Starbucks in Manhattan in the early 00s, and Wallace Shawn was a regular customer... Coming in a few times a week. He was so genuinely nice and enjoyed being recognized... He especially enjoyed making memories with kids. I enjoyed being friendly with all my regular customers and he invited me to some poetry readings he was doing at the time and a play he wrote with Bob Balaban! Lol. Really a positive and welcoming human!
In some ways I think Bobby was trying to assure his dad he wouldn't screw up so whenever Hank tried to remind him they could lose he might have interpreted it as him making a mistake and not Hank so he tells Hank what he thinks he wants to hear, not realizing Hank was trying to prep him for disappointment because Hank knew screwing up was a possibility for him because of his own father so when they got second place, Bobby knew it was best to show how excited he was to have this experience with his hero even if now he understands being a hero isn't being flawless, it's doing your best and being a good sport just like his dad taught him.
I liked that Hank grew in this episode. I don't see Bobby as strange in this episode Bobby is excited that they won even in second place because it is not losing. a lot of people) see losing as not placing in the top 3.
I think that Bobby is a wild card in my perspective. Watching this series I know the writers needed him to react a certain way for the plot. However I imagine that Bobby is growing and the world is changing around him so he feels strongly about whatever he’s dealing with. Whether the reaction from his hormones or just in the spur of the moment. I adore his personality and can’t wait for more commentary episodes. Also isn’t Pikmin 4 out? Love to read what you think about it.
Glad to see you doing more King of the Hill. This is a great episode, it’s also one of those where Hank and Bobby are able to bond, since they don’t have many things they have in common. And it’s nice Hank was able to overcome something he’s not been very good at since he was a kid due to his father yelling at him and making him nervous whenever he’d shoot a gun. Keep up the great work man!
The best way to keep kids safe around guns is to introduce them to guns early on. If they’ve never been around them, and their only experience with guns is from media, then they won’t understand how dangerous they really are. They also won’t know how to handle them safely. My dad took me shooting when I was 6, and he made it very clear how to handle guns safely, and how serious it really is.
I am intrigued and I look forward to hearing your future defense of Cane Skretteburg 🤔 Also I’d say their bedroom is more of a sea foam or mint green. At least when the lights are on, it looks more teal when they’re off.
Bobby isn’t weird here for season 1. They didn’t have Bobby locked in at this time so if you want him to be Bobby from like season 7 he can’t because the writers hadn’t found that character yet.
5:12 It’s aqua, which is in the same family as teal but is the opposite shade. In other words, Aqua is a light cyan or “foam” while teal is a dark cyan. The greener cyans are known as “mints” “eilatstones” or “malachites while the bluer cyans are known as “sky blues” & while last but not least, the ones that are in the middle are known as “turquoises” I know this because turquoise is my favorite color & I have to get specific so I can get it, as opposed to one of its cousins. It’s like knowing the difference between a red green winged macaw, a scarlet macaw, & their hybrid the Ruby macaw.
I’m not sure if it’s been mentioned, but the episode where Bobby befriends a raccoon and Lady Bird is thought to have gotten rabies also hearkens back to Bobby’s shooting prowess; “To Kill a Lady Bird”.
Wallace Shawn is truly an underrated actor. I don't entirely agree about Princess Bride (which is def overrated but not altogether bad), but seeing him pop up anywhere is a joy.
Honestly, I thought I was the only one who thought of Wallace Shawn as Grand Nagus Zek first. LOL! That bit was hilarious, and this review was so fun. Keep up the great work 😁
I just binged your first season and from your struggle with that sweet seductress Dr. Pepper, the appreciation of KotH to your comically candid criticism.. I enjoyed the hell out of your work, thank you 🙏.
I adore wallace shawn and he seemed like a geniunely helpful, nice guy. But am i weird for finding the comment about molestation weird when saying he can help hank? I might just be overthinking it, but its such an odd phrase, imo
As someone who has developed a slight sense of color differentiation from being a digital artist, I can tell you that it IS a teal. Maybe leaning into the aqua-marine side.
1:30 I was basically Bobby growing up... without the cute Asian girlfriend(s) I think it's the vidyah games... Hand eye coordination, Reaction time, Focus... lots of good things video games can teach you, just not very athletic things. It could also be he likes video games because he is inherently good at those things already...
I think Bobby's reaction is perfect. He kinda guessed something was going on with his dad, and while a little disappointed, he wanted to reassure his dad that even if they lost, it wasn't everything, they still "placed" and they could always try again. Plus, they got to spend some bonding time together, and considering how rare it is for the two of them to be able to bond over something, that IS the biggest win to Bobby
As someone who's been both target shooting and gaming for around 25 years, you're 100% right about videogames and shooting, 2 completely different skills. Anybody who thinks different needs to try taking a few shots with a larger caliber rifle or even a 12 gauge shotgun at a distance and they'll quickly realize life isn't a COD game! By the time they get the rifle sighted in at 100 yards, they'll probably be ready to call it a day after all that recoil and noise lol. This episode is a great example of why I love king of the hill, they're somewhat conservative but also aren't afraid to play devil's advocate either. How firearms are viewed by normal people in the suburbs who enjoy hunting and/or target shooting that believe in the second amendment is almost perfectly represented here. 2A all day! I'm a law abiding citizen who loves guns and I really don't care who doesn't like it! I grew up with them as a tool used to put food on the table and as a last resort to defend human life. Gun safety was instilled in me by the time I was 8 and over 20 years later, not a single firearm I've handled has been used to harm a human being. I refuse to give up my rights because people I've never met are using them to harm others, law abiding citizens will give them up when every important item and person stops being protected by people with firearms and every single criminal gives up their firearms too! Until then, if they're being used to protect celebrities and politicians then they'll continue to be used to protect my loved ones. Giving up guns because some people misuse them is like giving up your car because some people drive recklessly, absolutely ridiculous, irrational and flat out insane!
I might be projecting here, but I think Bobby might be doing a thing I used to do as a kid. I'd go into a competition talking a lot of crap, like "yeah, I'm going to send all these losers home! I'm gonna win it all!" And then I'd get, like, third place and be so proud that I won an award. It was enough to not be last. That was winning. I've definitely seen other kids do that, I know it's not just me.
"Grand Nagus" holy crap I forgot about that... sorry, my DS9 ~DARLING~ is Armin Shimerman... Quark ...Or perhaps better known as the great *ANDREW RYAN* A man CHOOSES, A SLAVE OBEYS..!
Honestly Hank should have been more encouraging of Bobby shooting. Its an olympic sport. Bobby could had been a gold medalist. Bobbys talents never got supported by Hank. He was a good dad but never thought his son had talents. Im hoping when it returns bobby brings this up.
Its amazing to me when cartoons tackle topics of abusive parents, Simpsons did it, and even Family Guy. Like its one of those topics thats relatable to everyone. I mean nobody has an abusive parent as bad as Cotton, but still
The quick psychological session makes sense when you remember it's a sport psychologist. Sports psychology is notorious for focusing on getting the 'athlete' functional rather than fixing whatever deep seated issues they have.
11:35 I think the writers may have brought back Bobby's shooting ability as a plot point later but as you said, this ep was PRE Columbine and by the time they probably wanted to address it again, it was likely POST Columbine and maybe they felt it wouldn't have gone over as well.
it's teal. I have a friend with color blindness, bit of a hot head about it. IE: playing call of duty...ghosts, I think it was. maybe one of the black ops. point is there's a section where you have to rotate the analog stick different ways to keep the water pressure in the green. he had in the yellow, died and kept freaking out about how it was green. then I told him the center of the gauge and he said it was gray. eventually he agreed to let me finish it.
