I never thought I'd get a chance to shoot let alone highlight a Leica camera on my channel, but here we are. My friend John and I travel to Port Costa with his Leica MP to shoot the sights and talk about why the Leica MP is special.
This video was shot on my Fuji XT-2 and Nikon 24mm f/2.8 lens.

That all black MP is basically porn for us dedicated Leica fanboys. I would definitely say that M9 is a proper Leica, though. Not because I have one myself or anything. Cough.

Fantastic video Chris! Love the film stocks you all used! I'm currently saving up for a M6 but right now I have a Yashica T4 and Minolta X-700 keeping me satisfied for now. Just finished a roll of Lomo 400 so can't wait to see how it develops :) I really admire how John spoke about his MP and the effect film photography has on him, it made me want to go out into the garden and just photograph stuff (given the current quarantine it'll do for now). Would love to hear more from you both about inspires you both to shoot the way you do, as in the style and how you come up with ideas for your work. Just started following you both on Insta btw! Awesome content!

I have the M4-P as my main workhorse and it’s an absolute joy. It was the dream camera I worked up to and made as a gift for myself after completing my first zine. What I find funny is that people always say that having a Leica (or film camera in general) slows you down. I’ve been shooting my M4-P for almost +2 years now and I’ve gotten so comfortable with it and just know the ins and outs of it that I think I shoot faster now.

🤤 the MP is such an epic piece of engineering. I’m not a rangefinder guy, but wow. Not sure I wouldn’t get better actual pics on my Nikon F2/FM3A though. Glass may only be 95% as good, but I think there is something about an SLR...

loved the MP!! And also the XT2 great choice of lens on that. Anyway, whats with the Scans. I think you wanted to give that very flat look I guess. Anyway sorry about complaining and thanks for your video, that gets me going again with my F100.
@ThePhotoDept

Yes! The MP is rad. I am such a huge fan of vintage F lenses and i think they are spectacular for video. As far as the scans, I scan for a very flat file so that I can set me black point and do any adjustments in post I need to and I dont let the scanner decide the look of the scans. These files were edited by John in his style and workflow, and I think they look great. Its all about taste! Thanks for the support.

If you want a Leica you need to learn how to use it. The best use of a Leica is without a light meter, so the M2, M3. M4 are best.

Yeah, there is really nothing like a Leica camera - even the old Barnack Leicas are amazing. I picked up a Leica IIIb last week with a 50mm F2 Summitar lens. There is no light meter built in, and the rangefinder and viewfinder windows are tiny, but the camera is in unusually good condition for a camera from 1939, so I'm in love. If you can manage without a built in light meter, the M3 and the IIIa-g are pretty good entry points without having to put down M6 money.

That MP is a beauty... There really is nothing like shooting a Leica, it just feels so perfect in use. It's just a 35mm camera like any other and is bested in technical ability by a Spotmatic, but damn they got it right 50+ years ago. Y For all the naysayers, you can get a Leica for a reasonable amount, just avoid the metered hype models like the M6, the premium for a light meter is huge.
@andrewshieldsphoto
@andrewshieldsphoto 4 года назад
I happen to shoot some Leica film cameras but aside from their small form factor I fail to see any magic save one thing..... resale value. Unless you spend much more than market value you are essentially using the camera for free aside from film and lab expenses. This does not apply to the current digital offerings naturally and I'd be cautious of film M bodies that require a battery to work. (I'm looking at you, M7). All that said there are plenty of other film cameras that continue to appreciate. But if you can afford to invest in a film M the appreciation is fairly rapid and the cameras are basically infinitely repairable should something go wrong.
@zguy95135
@zguy95135 4 года назад
They're not that small either, an M is roughly the size on an FM2. The reason to shoot Leica is because they feel so damn good to use... All other reasons are superfluous
@iDigress77times
@iDigress77times 3 года назад
Literally only the M7.
@madsmeierjger9558
@madsmeierjger9558 4 года назад
I own the M2, M3 and M6. It's hard to argue with (1) the joy of shooting with a Leica, (2) the quality of the glass and (3) portability. It's up to you to decide if that's worth the steep cost (though the high resell value makes up for some of this). I'll take my Nikon SLRs for anything below 35mm and above 90mm - here the Leicas are rubbish. No need to hate on either system ...

I don't understand why so many people pay a small fortune for a Leica then go out of their way to degrade the image to the point that same image could have been made with much less expensive camera. Kind'a defeats the purpose of owning a Leica. Yeah, I know, "Who cares?"
@kronkite1530
@kronkite1530 3 года назад
Nice, interesting video but, as a decades old user of film what on earth happened to the colour? It looks like how the digital fakers try to mimic film by desaturating and making everything green, teal or turquoise. Plus a dollop of extra dimming. Not a fair representation of Portra for sure.
@ThePhotoDept
@ThePhotoDept 3 года назад
Well, one could argue we’ve seen plenty of what Portra looks like when you leave it as it is. These photos were edited by John to reflect his preferences. I included the names of the film stocks to show what can be achieved with each film, sort of like showing the latitude each film has to take editing.
