Great work! I managed to shoot tampons at high speed through some plywood! I estimated they must be traveling at a supersonic speed in order to get that much penetration!
So I did the maths... Average weight of a M&M is 0.92grams. which is 14.2grains. at 1260fps that gives you 50foot-pounds of energy. To put that into perspective here in the UK, anything over 12ftlb is legally a firearm. Aha
Dear Mathias, You are known the world over for your wonderful videos on woodworking machines, your ingenious yet inexpensive solutions that are for any person across the world and the whacky sense of humour that you display. While the world of youtube is running off in the direction of clickbait, sponsorship, promotion and the like, it is refreshing to see that you still haven't resorted to these things. As always what people like the most about your videos is the honesty and your ingenuity. I personally feel that your earlier videos are the best. To this day my son and I watch them again and again and they have been a source of great inspiration for both of us. All I am trying to say is that we would love to see some more of your creative inventions like the pantorouter (which by the way the internet has attributed to you) and we (my 6 year old son and I) would like to take this moment to encourage you to always be Mathias and never fall for the gimmicks that most of the other youtube creators are using to further their business nowadays. Unfortunately German gun law forbids joerg to shoot something THROUGH a barrel. That is why he invented the arrow OVER the barrel 1000 Joule gun and such other toys. German gun law applies only to closed barrels through which projectiles are shot with hot or cold gases. If you shoot something down a rail or over a barrel it falls not under the gun restriction law.
Just a thought, stop me if I'm wrong. The speed of sound is the speed of a pressure wave traveling in a medium, so wouldn't the high pressure from the air tank travel at the speed of sound? So a projectile in a ideal, friction-less, infinitely long barrel would approach the speed of sound. I know I'm wrong somewhere but i don't know where.

You could hang a sheet of newspaper (do they still make those?) behind the target to detect penetration. I like the valve opening mechanism, very simple and works great!
Reminds me of stories my granddad used to tell. He grew up a Minnesota farm boy before he went off to war (WWII). He and his brothers used to shoot ball bearings out of lead pipes using gunpowder. Sometimes at each other, if I remember correctly! Old timey hijinks. It's amazing they lived long enough to be drafted. Nazis? We got this 👍.
I have something similar, but instead of the ball valve or sprinkler valve people suggested, I use a truck air horn valve. Far better air flow and the solenoid operates at 12v and just under 2 amps, so the solenoid opens very fast. Though I use it to shoot rockets made out of cardboard and foam pipe insulation, I haven't tried candy. Food for thought, heh.
Curious to see if this gets demonetized because you say the word "gun." Several other creators have stated that RU-vid is zeroing in on the word, rather than any images shown. Just curious to see if that is indeed the case.

Have you looked into a diaphragm valve? I know that they are VERY quick. How about a large air rifle pellet projectile? Taofledermaus has been having incredible accuracy with them.
Hi Matthias, Thank your your great work. You inspired me to experiment. Can you tell me what camera did you use for 1200fps? I'm doing microfluidic experiments an am using GoPro but the fastest it goes to is 240fps and sometimes it's not enough. Thanks, Alexey
The massive difference in performance due to the wadding makes me want to do science. Different amounts of paper towel? Different fabrics? I saw another comment recommending soaking the wadding in a solvent, perhaps for lubrication? What about dry lubes like a silicon spray or graphite? I really appreciate the attention given to measurements and figures!
What is the energy of the projectile? And is there a limit on muzzle energy for airguns in Canada (in Ontario)? According to my calculations, the muzzle energy was from 60 to 75 joules. (I took the mass of the projectile for 0.8-1 grams.)
There's a huge range of .22LR ammo speeds out there. I have a box of 1640 FPS Stingers right next to me. 1200 is actually kinda slow for a .22LR. More like 9mm, 115 or 125 gr, fired from a pistol, especially given the physical size (but not weight) of a peanut M&M. Similar speeds, albeit not the same energy.

Matthias Wandel You might be right. I was surprised air pressure would expand faster than the speed of sound. I did not expect that. The precision of the pendulum depends on if it absorbs all the kinetic energy, or if it is partly shattered all over the place. Your method depends on a grainy picture at 4.52. Is the distance 0.32 m or maybe 0.325 m?
