When I was about 7, 1977, me and my grandfather were in otasco. I saw this marlin 60, with the squirrel engraved on it and fell in love. Shortly after, I noticed he had this rifle. He would take me in the woods to shoot it. He passed away at age 93 and left me the rifle that I fell in love with. I still have it today and it still shoots perfect. No money could buy this rifle from me.

I have an 86 model 60. It would fire fine for a few rounds, then fail to eject. I would double check the lifter/ejector spring with a penny, and nickel, and it would be within specifications... And I was still having a problem with FTE. I scratched my head for awhile, and decided to watch the ejector portion of the spring riding next to the bolt, and I felt the spring grab the bolt on one movement, and let go. I took the gun apart to inspect the bottom of the bolt, and found a burr where the spring rides next to the firing pin in the groove. I used a cotton swab, and could feel the raised metal grabbing the fibers in two places. I smoothed the groove in the slot where the extractor spring rides with 400 wet paper, and then polished it with fine, and ultra-fine Scotch Brite. This fixed mine, and now it ejects every time. Some people say the ejector spring isn't supposed to touch the bolt, and I tried adjusting it off the bolt, and couldn't get it to eject at all. Check the bottom of your bolt for roughness in the area. If its smooth, and the spring is adjusted slightly above a penny, and just below a Nickel, it should be good to go. Remember to leave the bolt open when reassembling the gun, so you don't smash the ejector spring down. Good luck!

I am the owner of one of these rifles bought by my late father in 1967. It has the squirrel stock. He bought it at Kmart for $37, which for the price included a Glenfield scope. It is a very accurate rifle.

Number one reason these Model 60's suffer from double feeding and failure to eject is due to 2 tiny spots on the receiver end that the bolt slides into that allows the extractor to grab the spent cartridge. When you take it apart, look at the bolt where the extractor is, line it up with the receiver, carbon builds up on the two little holes not allowing the to get a proper grip to pull out the shell casing. Use a good solvent and a pick and clean that out, you gun will run like new.

Marlin 60 was my 1st gun. Picked it up at a local Kmart for just over $120 w tax back in '91-92'ish. One thing I noticed is that it was kinda finicky w certain ammo and would jam up always w CCI bullets from Kmart.. but it loved Federal American Eagle 40 grain LRs

That rifle was designed for high velocity 22lr ammo. That standard velocity ammo just doesn’t have enough juice to move the bolt back enough for reliable ejection

Years ago I had a Western Auto 'Revelation' .22 rimfire autoloading rifle..which was actually a Marlin Model 60 private branded for Western Auto. It was the most accurate .22 rimfire rifle I've ever fired. Also had a Ruger 10/22 it is a fine rifle but I always remember the dependable functioning and accuracy of that Western Auto/Marlin Model 60 I had. I suspect the 'microgroove' rifling had a lot to do with it's accuracy.

I also wanted to mention the recoil buffer,my 1980 Glenfield Marlin was doing the same thing then eventually could not pull the trigger,I saw something on your rifle,just like mine that should have gave me cause,you should NOT be able to pull the bolt all the way back to the frame,if the recoil buffer is in good shape it will prevent the bolt from going all the way back,the bolt should stop aprox. 1/4 to 3/8 in. from the back of the frame,this means the recoil buffer is doing its job,when I tore mine down for inspection the recoil buffer was in pieces,causing the trigger jam,I replaced the recoil buffer today,it is very simple ,now when I pull the bolt back you can feel it hit the recoil buffer and the rifle shoots, ejects perfect,fired aprox. 50 rounds of CCI Stingers,and the recoil spring is slightly bent but does not seem to have any effect on its function. Thanks for the video.

I could kick myself for selling my mod 60 Squirrel rifle several ears ago. I bought it when they could be had for cheap and never could get it to run without FTE's every other shot. I knew nothing about the 60 and info the internet wasn't what it is now, so finding help wasn't easy and I sold it dirt cheap. Grrrr.... I still wanted one so around 2010 I bought a new one, and that's about the time I began to discover the difference between the early and late models. Live and learn, but I have no complaints with the 2010 model. It's a nice shooter.

When my grandpa passed away 30+ years ago we got his small gun collection. A Universal M1 Carbine, a pistol, a revolver, and a .22 rifle. Of the collection, I was by far the least interested in the .22. I’d shot a couple of single shot .22’s before, was never impressed, figured what the hell am I gonna do with a .22. Finally dug it out of the closet to have a look see, pulled the charging handle back, bullets kept poppin out. A semi auto .22? Turns out it’s this one, with the squirrel stock, no bolt release, 18 shot tube. Didn’t even know what I had! Now I’m fascinated and determined to clean it up make sure it’s in perfect working order. Classic firearm and great addition to any collection.

I agree that the two designs are quite different in many respects. Most notably the magazines, trigger groups and methods of barrel attachment. But look at all of the semiautomatic rimfires that preceded the Model 60 (or, more accurately, the Marlin Model 99). Then compare the actions of the two rifles: - The streamlined, rectangular, aluminum receivers. -The design of the bolts. -The design of the charging handles and the way that they attach and interact with the bolts. The 10/22 action is a virtual clone of the Model 60 (Model 99). Both rifles have evolved significantly over their very long production runs but they remain, functionally, very similar.

Successor to the model 99. In tune they will accurately cycle thousands of rounds with supreme reliability. Easy disassembly for cleaning. Available with clip feed. A presentation grade model would be nice with fancy checked walnut as a tribute to well over 11 million units production. Your particular unit needs some attention as to mechanical system. I have three that function as clockwork with most any ammo. It’s all in the proper state of tune with proper occasional cleaning. Early models having steel inner magazine tube that required more attention as to rust. All replacement parts are available. My examples have shown target rifle type accuracy at a value price. To take advantage of this I installed a Leupold rimfire special 4 X on one to tack drive with the best of them. At sight in (75 feet ) after same hole bullseye. For fun I in four shots with small tacks same diameter as 22. Target fell to ground. It is the precise micro grove barrel with precision crown. Projectiles have spin imparted well with minimal diameter distortion and thus providing a superior gas seal and stable muzzle exit for exterior ballistics flight path.

Why some stupid law passed in NJ would affect the rest of the country is nuts. I have a 1984 made one. I've had numerous 60's over the years, sold them always got another. Like you the older the better. The main parts on these old tanks almost never wear out or break. It's a good idea to add a new recoil spring as you did but instinct tells me that's not the cause of the jams. I suspect 2 other things. !. check to see that the recoil buffer is intact and in one piece. They are made of sturdy plastic but over time and heavy use can crack and crumble thus causing the bolt to not return right after firing. And 2. Could be the tiny little springs in the extractor claws are worn out. This can sometimes cause the extractor to not firmly grip the spent round and toss it out. It can be a real pain when this happens and the next round jams up against the spent round stuck in the chamber. In conclusion most functional problems with the model 60, and many other firearms for that matter are almost always spring related

Clean the bolt thoroughly, making sure the ejectors move freely. Also clean the ejector recesses in the receiver on either side of the bore. They get plugged up. Old guns may look clean because the seller cleans what you see. Old oil and crud cause most of these issues.

May I ask another question? I purchased my squirrel stock Glenfield in 1971 or 2. It got used sporadically by me with very little cleaning or any problems for 35 years. I had it cleaned at a gun shop in about 2006 and it did not work properly after that. In recent years. I have been doing my own work and was able to get the Glenfield working perfectly by replacing the spring mentioned in my previous post. It seems that standard Winchester and Remington ammo are too wide to feed when the slide is released and visually do appear less tapered than the CCI and Federal which feed and cycle perfectly. The first two just jam. Have you encountered anything like this? I am 84 and when I bought the Glenfield, just paid my $35 and walked out of a chain store (Nichols) in NEW YORK State.
@SuburbanRifleman
@SuburbanRifleman 2 года назад
Wow. That’s amazing. We had a Nichols in the town I grew up in PA. I remember shopping there with my parents in the 1970s. Another common problem with these early Model 60s is the feed throat. It is just a small cast aluminum or zinc piece. The design was changed sometime in the last decade or two. You can retrofit your older model 60 with the new design and this should make most types of ammo feed reliably. I’ve been meaning to do it myself but haven’t got around to it just yet. Fitting the new style feed throat does require some modification of the parts but I don’t think it’s particularly difficult.

I deeply lament selling them because they did the same thing in the video they did not eject when I finally figured it out I wish I had known this as I didn't know it's called the nickel trick if you've heard of it the ejector sits too low so every time you reassemble you bend the ejector downward it's too low and needs to be bent upwards where a nickel will fit underneath it you can look it up I wish I'd known this in the past of course

I noticed you pulled the slide back again after releasing from the locked position. I have to do that also. Should that be necessary? That recoil spring can be a beast to deal with and once bent can be the source of problems.
@SuburbanRifleman
@SuburbanRifleman 2 года назад
Excellent question! It is necessary. On the model 60, and other tube-fed rimfires, a complete cycle of the bolt is required to release a cartridge into the feeding position and then to chamber the round. So a complete cycle should only be necessary if there isn’t a round already in the feed position, such as right after reloading the mag. The recoil spring is, indeed, a pain in the neck. Mine was bent and I had to replace it. Although the spring can become weak and start to collapse over time, it can really only become bent during reassembly. When the rifle is assembled, the spring should be fully supported by the guide rod at all times. Thanks for watching!

My first real hunting gun was the Glenfield Model 50 12 Ga with a full choke and a 28 inch barrel. Not quite long enough to be called a full length Goose gun but it was close. It is a bolt action piece with a 2 shot magazine inserted from the bottom underneath the action and in front of the trigger guard. Got it when I was 16 and I still have it to this day. 47 years later. Doubt it is worth a lot money wise but it holds a lot of sentimental value for me. I also have one of those Marlin .22's but never knew it was also made by Glenfield. Not sure if it is the earlier model you mentioned as I think I bought it used back in the late 80's or early 90's. Never had an issue with it jamming though.

It’s a work in progress. I fixed the ejection problems but now It’s got feeding troubles. I’m going to fit a new-style feed throat and see if that helps matters.

It's the ejector springs

The ejector spring was precisely the culprit.

The Marlin 60 is damaged if you dry firing a lot? I know there is no problem with Ruger10-22, but I do not know with Marlin.

I’m not really sure. I try to avoid dry-firing any rimfire rifles but I know some are more tolerant than others. Maybe someone else can answer this?

Never dry fire any rimfire. At the very least, you'll damage the firing pin. Worst case will have the firing pin peening over the edges of the chamber, and you'll eventually have ejection issues. Years ago I bought a used Ruger Single Six that had been extensively dry fired to where the chamber edges were affected, and I had to send it back to Ruger due spent casings getting stuck.

This is probably a stupid question but what would you call that ? It's not a bolt action it's not a lever action so what are they called ???
@SuburbanRifleman

Not a stupid question at all. It’s an autoloader or semiautomatic.
