Shooting Through a Windshield

Shooting through a windshield is quite unpredictable because of the high hardness of glass and the steep angle of most cars. Biggest difference in point of aim and point of impact will be visible when you shoot from the inside of your car to an outside target that is not at point blank.
Depending on the ammo, even 7 yards can already make such a difference that you might completely miss your target.

On a side note Hollywood has taught me that is perfectly safe to discharge from within a car with the windows up, including carbines and rifles, with no ear (or eye) protection whatsoever.

Interesting results. the reason for the flatpoint bullet's diviation is probably "normalization". They used this in WW2 with tank shells (normalizing cap), so when it hits angled armor, it has a lower chance of ricochet.

The tire result doesn't surprise me. The range where I shoot IDPA has rubber curtains in front of the backstop and forbids shooters from using hollow-point and flat-nose ammo for this exact reason: it prematurely degrades the curtains.

The open tip of hollowpoints/OTMs is why if you use self sealing polyurethane targets and someone puts a HP through it, they get to buy the next batch of targets.

Fun fact I learned in a guns-and-vehicles class - extermal hollowpoints like Underwood's Xtreme Defense deflect to the right when fired through class. My theory is that the edges of the round push against the glass as it goes through and gives it a push to the right because that's the direction the round is spinning.
@PolenarTactical
@PolenarTactical 5 месяцев назад
Interesting theory that's probably true - this could be tested with a proper high speed camera :)
@xxxlonewolf49

The glass deflect down from the outside. And up from the inside. At least with balll'ish ammo...it's like tank rounds hitting armor, it turns the round to dig in or at a high angle bounces off.
@PolenarTactical
@PolenarTactical 5 месяцев назад
That's the general idea but different ammo acts differently
@xxxlonewolf49
@xxxlonewolf49 5 месяцев назад
@PolenarTactical Why I said ball'ish. Till we get rounds that act like tank sabot rounds. The slower pistols rounds do seem to act odd, I wonder how much is the glass/plastic used? I know EU & the US have different safety standards for the "glass" in cars.

A few years ago, i had like half a day of shooting in, around and trying different spots of shooting a target through a car. It's quite amazing to see in person, what bullets do through different (multiple) surfaces and angles. Like making one bullet sometimes in 2 or 3 different holes. Then the instrucor was giving an extreme example of, why to try and peek up to see could be a bad thing sometimes. He did say it might take a few shots, but right away on the first one. He ricochets it off the hood hitting the target in the neck/head area.

I’ve always imagined it would be similar to shooting in water- it could change the angle of the bullet, or I guess it is actually maybe refraction showing the target in a slightly different spot when looking through water at an angle. You all know what I’m talking about. Good video

I remember during "weapons instructions" in my conscript time long ago, one thing they told us: it's useless to shoot at the tires mostly as the deflation will take too long as the 5,56 FMJ rifle rounds make too little holes in the rubber. Looking at your video it makes me think about something: Back then more cars used steel wheels than today. Would be interesting to see, if the rubber of the tire slows a 5,56 rifle round down enough to not crack an alu wheel! That the steel wheel won't crack or be punctured i can imagine due to the properties of steel and the tyre thread. But here i am wondering if shooting at an alu wheel might cause it to deflate (or even disintegrate while driving due to the forces involved) easier than a steel wheel thanks to the material properties.

@wolflegion_
@wolflegion_ 5 месяцев назад
Front and (some) rear windshields don’t shatter like that, because they are laminated glass. What you are thinking off would apply to the side windows, but a normal bullet will shatter those as well. This also means, if you are ever in a submerging car: don’t try to shatter the front windshield with that safety hammer. Go for the side windows.
@PolenarTactical
@PolenarTactical 5 месяцев назад
Only side windows break like that. Front windshield in modern cars is laminated so it can deflect or stop objects from entering the cabin. Also if the frond windshield would shatter at high speed, those small fragments would be dangerous for the driver and passengers

@PolenarTactical two things I have seen done is A) ramming the muzzle to the glass, firing a round to make a through hole, drive the barrel through the hole and then fire as normal. B) firing three rounds within a 4 inch or so group then driving the muzzle through to fire as normal.
@rmshoots91
@rmshoots91 4 месяца назад
Reload, Dr Freeman! I've seen somewhere long ago online that when shooting thru a windshield from the inside, keeping the muzzle as close to the hole in the glass as possible to the point where the front sight is touching the glass (but not pushing into it to push out of battery) helps avoid a lot of the deflection.

I'd say, because the "skyward" side of the bullet hits the glass first, and then the "ground" side rotates downward to "square" against the glass, but the breaks the glass, and is now traveling higher up on a target than when fired.

As a former car mechanic I can tell you that when a ~1.5 Tonne Car is pushing down on the tire, even a single FMJ entry hole will deflate the tire within minutes, especially if someone is driving the car. But I would be interested in how modern Self-sealing tires would perform, I have seen those Tires withstand multiple punctures from enormous nails without loosing any pressure, so they might even withstand the XRG, or not the projectile could also rip out a large part of the rubber/glue shit inside the tire.

Studied this specific topic on the JFK assassination at length. Windshield ballistics is very very important in understanding deflection in either direction depending on angle, caliber, so on and so forth. There are not a lot of specific videos and studies of windshields and ballistics out there. The few that are tend to be generalized. For those possibly interested in the JFK assassination, windshield ballistics side, first shot is a south knoll sourced shot from the rear of the box truck position as observed on commerce Street. One can observe this on the zapruder film, to take note of the box truck at the bridge when zapruder pans. It's an elevated and concealed snipers hide. Then apply small unit tactics to the plaza. You can see this described view as approximate to line of sight up elm, Google street view height plus or minus a few feet. Shot hits the windshield, intended headshot, drops, caused the throat wound. This is give or take, a 6-8 inch drop from the point of impact to the third row. The only reason the head shot was later successful is because the limo continued down elm and provided a better shot over the entire windshield with little to no correction to the sight picture required from that location. Small entry right side of JFK's head, large fist sized exit wound. Small team tactics and a mocked sixth floor 'snipers hide'. Fifth floor and sixth floor were controlled. It's known they are controlled because the testimonies in the WC do not explain static movements and whereabouts of certain personnel working on those floors for the two weeks prior. Owner of the TSBD was Harold Byrd, oil tycoon and friend of Lyndon Johnson, and civil air patrol founder. These were all war hawks that wanted the Vietnam war for money and profit.

Looking at the quality of the experiment and the amount of variables that exist, it seems to me that the first round would hit where you would want it to the rest of your rounds will not go where they want to because the glass is broken and molded into different and Unmeasurable variables therefore your third fourth and fifth round will not go where you want it to because the glass is bent and curved after the first round entered and exited.
