Who couldn't use more organization around the shop? In this episode I tackle drawer organization in my new workbench (bit.ly/3QWVIbE) as well as an easy upgrade to my upper cabinet (bit.ly/3D6UwwF) spray paint storage.
Drawer organization is so helpful when done correctly. It makes your workflow smooth and allows you to be efficient when building projects. It is, however, very easy for drawers to become overly cluttered and messy. The first step in any organizational step is to be intentional. You should evaluate how you use your workspace and then plan on what you want quick access to in that drawer. In my case I want quick access to things I'm always reaching for at my workbench like layout tools, marking utensils, and T-Track accessories.
I start by creating a section in the drawer for my common layout tools using Kaizen foam. This foam is produced in layers so that you can easily remove constant depths for clean tool pockets. I've been a fan of this stuff for a while now and happen to have a couple of sheets laying around.
Next I create a sliding "caddy" that will fit over the insert we just made. This shallow caddy will have things like T-Track clamps, pencils, and sharpies. I make this out of some scrap 1/2" MDF.
Finally I create yet another insert to sit next to the kaizen foam insert for other odds and ends. It's important that I don't just "fill it up" for the sake of it, but stick to my plan of what I want to have in this drawer.
Moving on to the spray paint cabinet. I have accumulated a lot of different spray paints over the years and storing them has always been a challenge. A conventional shelf in a cabinet does not let you see past the first row so the back rows often fade away into the great abyss!
I'm going to solve that by creating a shallow "inner shelf" that mounts to the inside of the cabinet door. This will allow me to have visibility to roughly 2x the spray paint cans in this cabinet. It's not the perfect solution but it's one that should make you life easier. You can also add something like this to any cabinet for that little bit of extra capacity.

You could build narrow drawers for those paint cans. One or two cans wide. You can reach every can without having to empty the whole cabinet. Similar to the shelf you put on the door but as drawers.

It’s Kaizen foam. Kaizen means to take apart and put back together in a better way. It is the term for a quick improvement done at Toyota, where they organize tooling, supplies and equipment to maximize efficiency and minimize cycle time. The foam is intended to be used in these type of events. Your video is a great example of how it is used.

One aspect of a shop no one ever talks about is. Organizing a shop where the shop owner does side jobs away from his shop. How to make it easier to grab what he may need to do almost anything and not spend an hour looking for stuff and loading the truck. I am a carpenter more than a woodworker .. so my needs may be a bit different ??

I have a desire to design and build a pull out shelf for my bathroom upright closet. It has pin shelves now, and I don't want to dill into the cabinet, so I have been trying to figure out how to attack slides to blocks that lock somehow into the pin holes... My brain hurts

@GarlandLym

So I have a question...that may lead to content for you. IDK... So my garage has a 6"-8" elevation difference over a 10' run. I want to build carcasses with a butcher block top to work on, with drawers as th only storage type below. I want to also have a notch for kitchen style kickplate. That should give you a mental visual on what i want to do HOW do you recommend I build a base to be level, but also visually appealing with such a huge elevation difference?
@TheRPhelps24
@TheRPhelps24 3 года назад
If you don't want to just use leveling feet, or there's not enough travel in them, you could build the platform independent of the carcass and level it first. You could taper and adjust this platform (that would make up the toe kick space) as well, and get it level however you want. Then just make the carcasses bigger than the platform. WHAM-O... toe kick area with a level starting point for your cabinet carcass. I think the wood whisperer has a video on some shop cabinets done this way
@GarlandLym
@GarlandLym 3 года назад
@@TheRPhelps24 Thank you. I just wanted to ask around first. Because my only idea was similiar to yours, where i get a 2x10 or 2x8 so that at one end its a 3-4" toe kick and a 8 or 10" toe kick at the other so everything is level...I just hate the idea of just a glaring visual difference...but I was not sure if there was a way around it. Thanks again
@TheRPhelps24
@TheRPhelps24 3 года назад
@@GarlandLym you could always just compensate slightly and accept that the counter will not be level, but strive for flat. Other than that, make it shorter. Otherwise you're going to get very complicated by "scribing" it. You could go as far as to mark a level line on the wall and then reference off of that and measure everything down to the floor. But then you wouldn't have 90 degree angles anymore, but it'd be close.

In your kaizen foam, you can use a small piece of copper tube (1/4", 1/2", etc.), heat it up, then touch it to the side of the foam where you've cut out to hold an item. It melts instantly and makes a nice little finger pull slot to easily grab the stored item. Great content as always. Cheers!

For the paint cans in the cabinet, do you have sufficient depth to store them on their sides, with the caps facing outward? If so, then you could build either a wine-rack style case to hold them individually, or just vertical dividers to hold a stack of cans. Either options would let you see (the tops of) all the cans you have in the cabinet. EDIT: Looks like the Classical Craftsman beat me to this idea!

This was VERY HELPFUL to me. AWESOME!!!! Another way to store your spray paint cans is lying down - like you do with water bottles/containers. I think you can buy those holders for water bottles (you know the personal bottles for a person - maybe take to the gym, or whatever) not giant bottles. Ones that are the size of paint spray cans. That way you can see the colour of your tins or you can label them on the top.

Another idea that might give you more storage space in those uppers with only one level of cans to glance at at a time. In my kitchen I had a similar problem, as anyone with upper kitchen cabinets used for spices and whatnot does. My solution was to take out all the shelves and toss 'em into a fire bowl. I built two racks that took up the entire space top to bottom in each upper mounted on bottom mount slides with a couple waxed hardwood rails in the top to keep everything centered. I got two such pullouts in each upper that were both double sided and allow for only one row deep on each side. I can actually fit more in those uppers now and see and access all of it easily. There's no reason it wouldn't work just as well for spray paint cans.

I thought you were going to do a spice rack slide concept for your spray cans. Maybe you should think about that. 3 rows of slide out racks the thickness of the cans in the existing cabinet.
