Thanks Phil, I started watching you apparently 3 years ago when I started wood turning. This is the first time your tour video showed up. Thanks for sharing this, I don’t feel so bad about my shop having so much laying around out of place. 🤠
Recently a new subscriber and really enjoy your videos on turning, I'm a retired 70-year-old Carpenter from rough to fine finish recently playing with lathe projects for fun and personal sanity lol. I cannot tell you how much your laid back approach and you're no nonsense, straight forward comical attitude towards your craft reflects mine... I've learned so much in a short time watching you and your beautiful projects I can't thank you enough... You're appreciation and respect for the pieces you start with and how you present them in the end is outstanding! All the best to you and yours and again thank you "young" man... Mark
I know this is 2 years old but thanks a lot. It is encouraging to see that you are an every man with a simple shop. Your videos are so entertaining and interesting.
Good morning Phil. I’m so pleased you took the trouble to send me the link to this video. You always live each day as it comes and fill it with meaning 🌞
You made me feel so much better about my garage shop, in that seeing the clutter and dust, I'm not feeling so bad now Phil. Way to lift a guys spirits, ha, ha!
So I bought a cheap set of tools online since I'm just starting out as a rookie and thought, "man, these are just worthless!" Well, duh, they had to be sharpened. Neighbor gave me a Rockler honing system that works so-so, but only for straight edge tools like chisels. So this video helps a TON! Thanks Phil! The things you're teaching people is invaluable! Of course I am biased since I LOVE all types of woodworking. Thank you again for all your videos, way too cool 😎!!
This video of Phil Anderson just popped up on my feed from five years ago. Mister Phil, if you get this message, I think you make my favorite bowl turning videos. I used to throw away wood that I now turn. Long time subscriber, many thanks!
Hi Phil, just watched the shop tour and loved it, particularly the equipment that’s bought and never been used, I’m a master at that one, and also the stacks of lumber. I know I will very rarely be able to tidy up, and I’ve made my peace with that now. Thank you for sharing your workspace 🙏.
Fantastic stuff! I love the creative clutter! I was starting to worry that I'm the only one who keeps a glorious conglomeration of marvelous messiness! Thank you so much for the quality content! So much noise on the internet, and it's so nice to see someone so real share their love with us!
Well Phil, i really am late to the party with this one! It showed up in my feed and is just a tad before I started watching you tube so i hadnt seen it. What a lovely surprise to see your workshop, thanks for showing us around. See you tomorrow!👍
Great to see your ‘shop’ rather larger than mine, which is just as cluttered but used mainly for metalwork as I build big telescopes and other astronomical equipment for the two unusual observatories I built. I have converted a greenhouse into my wood turning ‘shop’, lined it out, put a heater and lights in and the various tools, machines etc. our block is a natural wooded hillside 5-acres with good views of the skies and more varieties of Tasmanian hardwoods in various states, a lot perfect for wood turning. I use a two ton Komatsu excavator to do my ‘gardening on the small sections we have cultivated, it is also how I moved my felled dead trees to where I can cut them up. At 83+, my muscles are not quite what they used to be. I have also reached that stage where I can’t be fussed making jigs etc. if I can buy them, time is too precious to waste on making tools, fittings etc. it takes time away from using my big telescopes, wood turning, keyboard playing, landscape painting, growing our foods hydroponically, and the list goes on. Don’t know how I do it for the money!!. Take care, my friend in wood turning, from the Southern Cross Observatory, Tasmania 42 South. 👍😁🔭 not sure if this will work-try iy and let me know please: photos.google.com/albums
Thanks for sharing Phil. It’s nice to see other wood turners shops. It gives us just another look into who you are. Your shop looks so much like mine, stuff piled on top of stuff. But we know where everything is at lol. Thank you for sharing I enjoy you videos.
Hey Phil, I've watched a lot of your videos and find them entertaining and educational. I live near Bellingham and am a new turner. I bought a used large grizzly lathe this summer. My Uncle used to live in Bonney lake so am familiar with the area. Keep up the videos.
Thanks for the tour. Have enjoyed your turning videos for some time. Particularly enjoyed the comment about once you found turning you gave up on flat work. Seems it happens to most of us.
Hi Phil & many thanks for inviting us into your shop & showing the beautiful surroundings to your home. I’m a huge fan of your channel (guess you figured that out a while ago !). I enjoy your no nonsense, always ready to learn something new and share approach to the age old craft of turning something pleasing from a piece of wood. I may be thousands of miles away but I feel a kind of affinity with you, the way you approach a project down to understanding the tools and how they’re sharpened in a particular way and why. I’d like to thank you for the hours of enjoyment you have given me especially during a period of my “old age” when the unexpected has struck me down and prevented me from being in my shop, doing what I love - taking a piece of wood and making something unique that takes its place in my home or becomes a gift or often ends up as a charitable donation to raise money for good causes. Have a Very Happy Christmas 🎄 and Health and Happiness to yourself, family, loved ones and friends in the coming New Year. Regards from the U.K. Geof
Thank you so much for your very kind, thoughtful words, Geof! Your comment means more to me than you might know. I so wish for you to be able to get out to your shop and enjoy these "golden years." There has been a little tarnish on the gold at our place, too, lately. Mostly the reason for this shop video instead of a turning. Hopefully the new year will bring new blessings and fewer challenges. Merry Christmas to you and yours, Geof! Phil
man i am so glad you did that.you are my friend .i am legally blind live aline been a woodworker/caionet maker . somehow i got to be 75 years of age . have bad ra spine trouble . i have done just a little bit of turning. i am trying to put some tools together so i can start turning a few things watching you inspirals me ..ok, donnie here signing off
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop you're welcome. Always a pleasure to watch your videos. My family will come into my computer room and say, "Whatcha watchi....Ah Phil from Shady Acres?" I go "Yup!" lol
This video is True testament you dont need all those fancy tools to achieve PROFESSIONAL RESULTS.!!! Just be your self and explain in Laymans Terms what you are thinking about before you even start turning. Giving ideas and instructions what you are thinking about and demonstrating the steps to get professional results. I think this mind set is exactly why you have millions of follower's and subscribers cant wait for your next video so WE CAN GET(OUR) FIX As you can clearly see there are no fancy tools, just ordinary turning tools. THANKS AGAIN for showing your shop to All The World To See where all the magic happens. I for one will be ever indebted that I have learned so much from YOU. I am so glad I Stumbled on to YOUR CHANELL!!!!!!!! Although we have never met, I would be HONERED if I was able to refer to you as one of my friends. We are about the same age and both went to the same OLD school together and seem to think a lot alike. GOD BLESS YOU KEEP ON TURNING
I find there is a.wealth of information in your older videos that shouldn't be missed. I was waffling between several different sharpening systems and decided upon the Easy Grind Ultimate Raptor.
Thanks Phil I to collect all sorts of timber and often wonder if I’m doing the right thing after seeing your supply I know I’m doing the right thing I find your videos very informative and helpful to me. This is coming to you from Australia
Thanks for the tour. I enjoy seeing other people's shops and get some ideas on setting up mine. My brother just made a negative rake scraper for me and I was wondering what angles to try. This will give me a starting point. My son just showed those angle finders and I have to get one. Thanks again.
Very interesting my shop is kinda in disarray as well , I watch you all the time and learn a lot , I’ve been turning for maybe couple yrs and have learn most of my techniques fr you thank you so much , love ur show
It all looks good to me. I like your view of the sky (trees). I don't know how many videos I've seen and you complain it's cold. I would definitely put up some insulation and hook up that heater. Your shop is more cluttered than mine. Maybe I should show my wife.
Phil. Great expltion of thing again. One thing I do on sharpening is I take a piece of duct tape and write the degrees on the tape. I also take a magic marker and color the end of the tool to see when the angle is correct. I have one of the triple holders but never new what it was. Now i know. Thanks for your info
My husband and I watch your channel and love it. He just started turning wood a couple months or so ago and he loves it. He has been a machinist by trade for over 40 years so it made sense to progress to wood turning after our bil gave him a wood lathe. He has made trees, candleholders, bowls etc. Love it! We are wondering what kind of pen you use to sign your beautiful creations? We have tried a few and we're just not sure. Lol Thank you! We will keep watching! Yours is the best!
Hi Sandra! I use an Ultra Fine Point Sharpie. The trick is, I only put paste wax over it, most everything else causes the ink to run. I hope that helps. Thank you so much for your very kind comment! Phil
Hi Phil, this tour made me sad and glad at the same time. Glad because now I don’t feel so bad about the clutter in my garage shop, and sad because I would love to have some acreage where my shop is not two meters away from the neighbors. At least I have good neighbors, that do not complain about the noise of the machines.
Thanks for all the videos Phil! It's great to be able to see your workshop and it sounds like you're in a beautiful location. Yes, I suppose the heater would be a great addition - in AZ an air conditioned shop is a luxury. How about a woodstove for your mistakes?? The chisel rack makes me nervous, but other than that I love your shop.
A wood stove would be nice, John, but no room. I was trying to think why the chisel rack would make you nervous but I guess it's because the pointy ends are up? That was a concern when I set it up but I have never even come close to getting a scratch. Maybe there's more room than it looks. Anyway, I love it! Thanks for stopping by! 😊
Thanks for the tour, Nice touch. I wondered how your shop was set up. I have a work in progress with mine, I have to come up with a chisel rack, i found that the shaft falls out if I stand one in a hole drilled in a bench top. Resharpen, won't do that again. I have installed and hooked up a natural gas heater in my garage, it is a lot more comfortable.Keep up the great videos. Rob from Oakville Ontario Canada.
I was looking for ideas on what to do with beautiful trees that I had to fell on my property when I came across your channel. I love what you do, especially the unusual shaped bowls. I live in Port Townsend, not too far from you. Could I pass on some Alder pieces to you?
I'm so glad you found some of my pieces useful in your own turnings! I was in Port Townsend last summer. Love it over there! I have turned some Alder and it can be very beautiful. If you have any with tight bark and find yourself over this way, let me know. Very kind of you! 😊
Good to see where the magic happens, and love the sharpening tips. Just forked over the scrilla for CBN wheels that I’m anxious to use, and move my turning perhaps from carbide to traditional tools. Thank you.
Good for you, Louis! Can I assume if you are taking a step up to CBN that you've already got a great jig, like the Wolverine? With that combination, sharpening is a breeze and I think you may get more personally involved in a piece when using HSS tools. At least, I do. You can just feel the wood better, helps with the creativity. Thank you, Louis! Phil
Phil. Thanks for the video on your shop. Made me feel better about the condition of my shop. It’s not as big as yours but it’s cluttered. Mine is attached to the my garage so I don’t have to go outside and it’s insulated and I have a small electric heater.
Phil, Just found this. Great tour of your shop and associated tools. Good tutorial on sharpening. I’m giving a talk to my club in December on grinder safety, especially on not getting too close to the center of the wheel to avoid a bad catch and ruining your wheel. Don
Hello Phil. Partly on my question about sharpening this video answered. It will be necessary to make yourself such a device. It is a pity that turning is my hobby and not my main occupation. Time for hobby only Saturday and Sunday summer. Winter workshop is not available in the country, far from the city and a lot of snow. Thanks for science!!!
I started turning a little over a year ago and fell in love with it. My nephew is in the logging business and have a great supply of blanks. My shop is 10x16 and just has room for me to walk. I have full-size tools and miniature tools but little space. Thanks for the videos.
Wow, I've been trying to meet someone in the logging business! I know there is lots of great wood to be had if I just had the right contacts. You are lucky! Phil
Thanks Phil. I truly enjoyed the video. It’s so gratifying to see where one does their hobby. You have an awesome shop! Your videos are always such a gratification, as you always explain things with such detail. Thank you again Phil. Have nice evening. Bob.
Thank you so much, Bob! I too am curious about the surroundings of the RU-vidrs I watch so thought this might satisfy the curiosity of others. I'm happy you took your time to watch and comment! Phil
Thanks Phil! Your info on sharpening was really great I have the same sharpening station you have and I have had a heck of a time on sharpening the scrapers good! I’m going to try your tricks! Thanks!
Ya know, Ray, I'm amazed by the wonderful works of art created in small spaces. I always thought bigger was better, but now I know better and if I needed to downsize, I know I could continue turning in a much smaller space and be perfectly happy. I think all I would need would be a bandsaw, maybe a drill press and the lathe. Oh, and a little space to store some wood! Phil
Thanks, Carol! Yeah, I could, IF I could get at my tablesaw. I'm afraid I'm jammed in there, even worse than when I shot this video! It's hopeless. :) Phil
Enjoyed the tour. I’m afraid I would have to declutter so as not to feel claustrophobic. Lol! I must admit again your work is gorgeous and you have a lot of talent. The area you live in is beautiful. I’m in a desert.
Declutter to where, Sue? My whole shop is FULL! LOL! I don't use much of it but can't part with any of it. I guess I'm a hoarder but don't tell my kids! It is beautiful, here, but I like driving through the desert. So much to see. Wouldn't care for the heat, though! Thank you! Phil
Phil, I stumbled across this video and just watched it. Really enjoyed seeing your shop. Would be interested in seeing the 2021 version! Got a ot of good sharpening tips! Thanks
Thanks Phil. I understand fully how things tend to pile up over the coarse of a lifetime. My garage looks very similar except there are also lots of household overflow too. I'm a fan of your location. Beautiful part of the country. All the best and Merry Christmas.....
Thank you so much, Charlie! I've always heard no matter how big your shop is, you fill it! I never imagined I would but, well, you see the consequences of being a hoarder! Merry Christmas! Phil
It keeps 'em clean while they rest and maybe one day, when I start using them again, that clean shiny surface will inspire me! Thanks for watching and commenting! Phil
great video Phil, I love to see what everybody else's place looks like. for some reason i though you were in a much larger place. get that heater plugged in, you would love turning even more...
Thanks Phil. That really helped on the sharpening. I have all the stuff you have I just didn't have my oneway jig set at the correct notch. I matched your and set my wheel to 60 using that angle deal and I am in business. What would we do without RU-vid.
Phil, I really enjoyed the shop tour. Thanks for info on CBN wheels and 1 ½" width. I am getting a new setup now. Found your videos yesterday and I can't get enough of them. Trying to watch them all. Yesterday I sent you an email, and last night you answered. Thanks a lot. Keep up the work and keep the videos coming. Now i am going to look at small tree trunks and roots in a whole different light. D Stephens
Thank you, Joey, I appreciate your comment! YES! When you become a woodturner you also become a wood scavenger. Looking here, looking there! "I can turn that!!" LOL! Phil
Well, yeah, I've thought of that, C W. Problem is, it just isn't me. I'm totally into nature, natural edges, live edges, voids and cracks. Round turnings just don't get me too excited anymore. I like to look at segmented pieces and watch them be created, I just don't want to do it.
Hi Phil. Nice shop tour! I’m still stealing space in the garage for my stuff. Not nearly as satisfying or convenient as a dedicated shop. I have two 8 foot pieces of a bowling alley that I’ve always meant to use for a workbench and tool stands. 100 year old maple is pretty tough stuff! I’m just north of you I see, in Vancouver, BC. When you talk about cold and rain, I’ve often wondered if it was just coincidence that I was experiencing the same weather! So ..... nope! Cheers, Rick
Well, howdy, neighbor! I'll tell you, I had to cut my bowling alley workbench to length when I first got it. What a chore. That is the toughest wood I've ever cut with a saw. Plus, it's loaded with small nails that hold one layer to the next, while the glue dries. If you can get a bench set up with it, it will last forever, I'm sure of that. Yup, sounds like we are on the same weather band, Rick. Well, spring is about to be sprung! 😊
Hi Phil, thanks for the grand tour! doesn't every wood worker/turner have a wood collection that they started when they were young? I certainly do! I'm so sorry to hear about Edna. (saw your other video today) Im really at a loss of of what to say. honestly I cant say anything that will make you feel better, but we all go through some kind of loss, big or small. It really made me sad, and I don't even personally know you, but I know your a good person and I know I look up to you, and I hope you can keep wood turning and staying connected with us. :)
Hey Phil, Thanks for showing your place. Is Bonney Lake by Tacoma? I went to Seattle some years back, and I think we passed it. The tour and tips were really great, I love the way you contribute with your knowledge and tips. Keep turning, and keep being an inspiration! Regards Lars
Hi Lars! Bonney Lake is East of Tacoma, which is where I grew up. It goes Tacoma, Puyallup, Sumner and Bonney Lake. Seattle is about 40 miles NW. I'm so glad you watched and enjoyed the tour of my shop, and took your time to comment, much appreciated! Phil
Hey Phil, You're such a personable guy. Thanks for the tour of your shop and forest. It's not everybody that is so open to us in the public domain. I personally have always enjoyed your shows, no ego, no BS just thats the way it is, kinda like Edward R Murrow on the news. Ha. Man Keep turnin' and sharing the knowledge. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Edward R Murrow? Don, you are showing your age! LOL! Thank you so much for continuing to watch and comment, Don, I truly appreciate it! Merry Christmas to you and yours! Phil
Wow, buddy, nice shop. Thanks for the tour. I've been collecting lumber for as long as I can remember as well, so we also share that curse. For crying out loud, Phil, run a gas line out there and hook that heater up. LOL Merry Christmas, my friend! Billy
