Such a humble person that parisian craftsman Philippe is! I adore those people who remain so grounded and humane even when their craft is of such a high level!

Really enjoying both the consistency and high production quality of the new videos, Kirby. Really hope you and your team have the opportunity to visit Japan and interview the many bespoke shoemakers there (such as Yohei Fukuda).

14:45 Interesting - I was talking with another shoemaker in Paris about how I have to think about how to say 13/30 and 14/40 (treize/trente quatorze/quarante) in French before I say them because I mix them up all the time, and he said he always had trouble mixing up 13 and 30 in English. I guess we're not the only ones! Anyway, great vid, I'll have to visit his shop next time in Paris!

While the fact that he makes his own thread to sew the welt that's taking it to another level as a craftsman👍👏 certainly if I was in a position financially to have some bespoke shoes made certainly this gentleman would be on my shortlist

When you are interviewing / talking to people don't lean into them especially with your head. If you pause the video at like 14:10 or so you can see you are forcing the guy to lean back while talking in order to make space between you two and it looks incongruent to the material of the topic. Stand straight and it will make the other guy feel much better :)

Just found your channel and I'm enjoying the content. Wondering about the process for getting a bespoke pair of shoes, it appears I would have to travel to England for several fittings. I have worn Allen Edmonds for years, if I wanted a pair of Carmina's would I more than likely order the same size. Can't even find a store in Chicago.

Thanks for checking out our videos. For Carmina's, they don't have a store in Chicago. New York would be the closest brick and mortar store. However they have an exceptional online shop.

Quite an artisan. I would have enjoyed some close-up work-I.e., rather than mentioning the eyelet machine, I would have enjoyed a closeup of an eyelet being set into the leather, and so forth

I’m a fan. And I understand that this channel attracts a high end viewership interested in quality things. And I further understand the KA mission statement to help the well dressed acquire and care for their wardrobe. But man, there is more to life than being well dressed. There is well dressed AND.... There is a certain out of touch with realty quality to these videos, which, even though I am a fan of the finer things, seems anachronistic. In another video KA laments men don’t dress in tuxedos for dinner anymore. Can we celebrate fashion and quality and maybe throw some money at charity along the way? Or maybe spend a video or two on what it means to BE a gentleman, not just DRESS like one? It’s all good, but it’s rather like having crime brûlée for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Let’s tether our love of fashion to the real world, not a Downton Abbey fantasy. I guess it sells, but what price a man’s soul?

There's nothing soul-stealing about learning about a true craftsman who executes his trade with skill and pride. There's nothing wrong with buying a pair of shoes from him, either. It supports him, his family, his apprentices, and eventually their families when they move up to Journeyman and Master levels. There are channels that cover how to be a gentleman; this channel is about wardrobe. Nothing more complicated than that.

James P had you read what I wrote you’d see there is no assertion of anything wrong with any of it. My comment is on the overall aesthetic and ethos of the channel, not this particular video, and to that extent perhaps it was misplaced. Nonetheless, I think a steady diet of this rich food (and I love rich food, that’s why I watch) would go down better with some content that is a bit less hedonistic. KA does some excellent videos on polishing and shoe care in this vein, and I suppose it’s on me to watch my intake, just as in life. But again I’ll say...it would be nice if KA brought things round to realty once in a while. Here’s how to look good. Here’s how to be discerning in purchasing x y and z. And here’s how to pair handcrafted shoes with an impeccable suit, and not have that suit be empty. Maybe sponsor a golf event (or a pheasant shoot?) to raise money for quality footwear for under-privileged kids and do a video on that. I don’t know... I guess I’m looking (fruitlessly I admit) for help feeling better about myself while viewing all this talk of consumption and excess.

@@edd2771 Kirby actually does charity work, but keeps it mostly private. He was recently inducted to the Order of St John and posted about it on his personal IG.
