BRANDS TESTED: Bounty, Wypall, Scott, Tork, Krew, Sontara, Super Tough, Brawny and Bounty. Paper and shop towels tested for wet and dry strength, capillary, absorption, abrasion resistance and shedding. The ultimate durability test--the strongest brand is used as both fuel and as a head gasket in an engine.

I know it’s not always applicable, based on what you’re testing, but I’d really love to see more “what does it actually cost to do the thing the product is designed to do” graphs in the future

Which is expected. To be a good absorber the material needs to be more porous which leaves less material for strength. That's why I have both types in the shop and in the kitchen. I would also have tested how easy it is to remove residue from some surface. Because from my personal experience it's easier with shop towels because of the higher tensile strength.

I'm an aircraft mechanic and we use Sontara wipes. Their main purpose is to clean surfaces before applying sealants/paint so it's really important they don't leave behind fibers. If we have to clean up any kind of spill from oil, grease or hydraulic fluid we use PIG mats, which are hydrophobic and only collect the hazardous chemicals

I've been using those Wypall X80 towels for years and can confirm, I have never found anything that performs remotely as well. The only thing they lack is absorbancy but it doesn't matter because the towels are huge so even big spills are not a problem.

Exactly! I have been using them as a mechanic and in a body shop setting for years. Nothing else comes close. If they are not soaked with oil, grease, or silicone etc. they can be thrown in the wash with clothes and dried in the dryer afterwards. CAUTION don't dry oily or chemical soaked towels as they can catch fire! I have some of these that are as old as 2009 and are still usable.
@joebenson528
@joebenson528 Год назад
It's hard to develop a highly absorbent towel that is also durable because absorbency needs loose fibers that are inherently weaker than tightly woven fibers. Wypall is a great shop towel, for oil spills specifically bounty is better and 66% cheaper.

One benefit I’ve found for the blue colored towels is they darken when they come in contact with a fluid. When looking for a weeping brake line or plumbing fitting, that’s worth the expense to me. The white ones just don’t show enough contrast for a tiny droplet to show.

I just wanted to say, those Tool Box brand towels are sold at more than Harbor Freight. Also sold under a variety of names, although those would mostly be seen commercially (Caterpillar, John Deere, Uline). There are also several variant *weights* of it, from like H700 to Z2200. This refers to how it is processed. Brawny 6-packs in White are made by the same converting plant. The square box dispensers, plastic wall-mountable buckets, and bucket refills ranging from 7" diameter rolls to 10", are all from the same plant. The paper is called DRC - Double Re-Crepe. It's actually the name of the specific process. It gets fluffed, a latex/natrosol/couple other binders mixed in, wrapped around a steaming hot drum (literally), cooked, scraped off, sent through an oven, then repeated to the other side. It just about increases the absorb-ability of the stock paper 4x for the lighter weight, up to 7x for the heavier weight. There's also a tear resistant option where there's basically a loose plastic filament in the wiper that keeps it from tearing apart. Then, there's a no-tear option (called diamond DRC) that's usually blue, red/orange, or pinkish-red that has a very tight diamond weave layer cooked onto both sides of it. Signed, The millwright that fixes all that shit

They are not what they once were, but they still do a decent job, especially on autos, large appliances, and other very costly items not practical for Project Farm to test. Consumer Reports does NOT accept advertising, unlike their competitors in print, and they are a tax-exempt organization. You cannot be impartial when accepting ads. The sontara towels are great. I was an automotive painter for 20 years and loved the sontara towels. I was very picky and a towel snob. After I masked off a car, I would clean my panels with grease and wax remover. Most towels leave to much lint behind. The sontara’s were the only ones that didn’t lint. And when painting, you need the cleanest, dust and lint free environment possible. Little towel lint fibers left behind are detrimental to a nice smooth paint finish.

I've been using the Great Value brand for a very long time. For the money, it's a good paper towel. I always wanted to know which paper towel is best for low lint use. Thanks for another great testing video!
@maulerrw
@maulerrw 3 года назад
Likewise low lint is important to me. I usually struggle with lint when cleaning gasket surfaces and find myself wiping several times to remove the lint from the last wipe. It probably doesn't matter but when you want something to last 100,000 or more then you don't want it take chances!

I think Kimberly Clark actually is Scott. It really likely just comes down to the fact that the white box Kimberly Clark ones are meant for pretty brutal industrial use whereas the blue Scott towels can pretty much be bought at Walmart by any Tom Dick and Harry. I've honestly used them all in my years, but in my house we use the Bounty towels because they don't scratch and they are quick spill cleaners. We do have some Scott blue towels in our garage just for drying our hands basically. I honestly just use the run down microfiber rags for just about everything in my garage though. Worst case scenario they get too destroyed to be worth washing and I throw them out. But they were junk at that point anyway.

I prefer the Costco "short sheet", white paper towels, as well as the Scot, blue shop towels, in the garage. I think the Scot blues are just extremely versatile, all around. As other commenters have said, there is a trade off between toighness, and absorbency. The Scot blues seem to have a perfect, all around balance when it comes to being lint free, strong enough to not fall apart while detailing wheels on a car, for example. And the one thing I do love about them, is that they are pretty damn soft. And they tend not to easily scratch plastics, clearcoats, etc. Soft enough that I tape two of them down (still connected together), on a flat wooden TV tray, when I search coin rolls, for high MS grade coins. These towels don't scratch the delicate fields in the coins, and they are thick enough that the coins stay put, and dont slide around. Great video! Thanks PJ!
