My previous dust collection system was decent but it definitely had a few shortcomings. With Oneida's new SuperCell unit, I gave my shop an amazing upgrade to dust collection! Not only did it solve all of the issues I was having with the previous setup but it out-performed it 10-fold! In this video, you'll see the comedic assembly and installation process as well as some not-so-scientific testing of how well it performs. This thing has been an amazing upgrade to the shop and I'm really looking forward to working in a much less dusty environment now!

I kind of feel like I’ve been cheated on. As a “frugal by genetics” shop guy, I’m always watching how you McGyver things together in a way that I can, too...it’s kind of therapeutic, I suppose. Then, you put up a video and you’re pulling all of this NEW stuff out of unopened boxes...and it’s shiny and clean. I felt a kinship with you, but now I’m just confused...I don’t know what to feel. Just when I thought 2020 couldn’t throw anymore curves, Drew gets a sponsor, he doesn’t use a flathead screw, and he...sniff...discards all his homemade fittings. Go ahead and talk amongst yourselves...I’ll be curled up in the corner sobbing for a few minutes. I’m gonna miss the “old” Drew...
@YouCanMakeThisToo
@YouCanMakeThisToo 4 года назад
I mean... if it makes you feel better, some of his machines go from a 4” port, to a 2.5” hose, to a 4” hose.. instead of just running 4” and necking it down where needed for the 2.5” tools. ‘Cause even getting a $2500 he didn’t spring $50 for new fittings 🤣🤣. The frugal lives on my friend.
@davidkendrick3158
@davidkendrick3158 4 года назад
YouCanMakeThisToo There is some consolation in that, I suppose! I think I may be looking at this minor misstep on Drew’s part from the wrong angle. I should be grateful that I have a basement shop to go to and that I’m gathering my materials from the dumpsters in the subdivision under construction across the street rather than my neighbor’s dog house, unlike some people... Perspective is everything!

@@davidkendrick3158 I'm envious of all of you. The only place I have to do any of this woodworking stuff is in a little shed that is half full of bins from when we moved on one side, and after the few hours on the rare warm winter day, we uncovered the left side of the shed to discover the floor was sloped and needs to be torn out and replaced. Darned groundhog. What to do? I can't trap and relocate it because it is illegal, I can't shoot it because I live in a residential neighborhood, and I can't poison it because with an animal that large it would have enough poison to injure or kill any animal that scavenged the corpse (including pets). So spending $2,400 on a vacuum (although a real kick-butt vacuum) is nice, for the time being I'll have to stick with my shop vac. (sad face). And what is with the random flathead screw? I'm assuming he used one once and someone griped, so he made a point to keep using them in every video. I'm working my way through his videos, but I haven't seen anything to explain that random act yet. I just laugh each time imagining he is doing it to inflame some arrogant troll. :0)

You are right but in my opinion a really solid dust collection system is one of the biggest quality of life improvements you can make for your woodworking. It is the most-used piece of equipment in your shop by a long shot. Everyone has different budgets of course but if you do have a decent budget and you are trying to decide where to allocate it then I would put this pretty high on the list.
@espressomatic

And you missed the sponsor of the video, so this system didn't cost him a penny. :) When something's free, or you're getting paid on top for making a video about it, doesn't matter if it costs $1 or $1000000 I suppose.

I bought one about three months ago. It replaced a Grizzly 2HP with a home made cyclone that I had for 25 years. I understand the points about expense. Here's my thoughts. First, it's made in America by American workers. That is important to me. Second, I have a small shop and this has a smaller foot print than my old DC and most competitive DC. How much space it takes is important to me. I'm a single operator, using one machine at a time. I don't need high volume like a multi person shop. I want high velocity- which this unit provides much. I have *much* less dust now from jointer, table saw top, router table top, backed end of planer. I'm very satisfied with it's dust collection capability. Less fine dust floats in the air- stuff doesn't get covered in dust now- and that means I'm breathing less dust. Expensive DC? Yes, but so is medical problems and allergies. Like the video, I connected a 20 foot 2 1/2 hose to the 4" hose which came with it. With standard shop vac accessories, this becomes a super shop vac for the shop and running the hose out to driveway to vacuum the car. I had the Grizzly for 26 years. Being 65, I expect to have this until I no longer do woodworking. Until then, I have a great DC system.

Step 1 should be to ditch that smaller reducing hose and make all your machines dust ports at least out to the 4" duct - ok, some of them won't be able to do that easily, but seriously, don't restrict the flow more than necessary, because more airflow means more fine dust removal

You’ve had this system for a while. How is it working for you? I run a one man, full time furniture shop. I purchase all my rough kiln dried lumber directly from a saw. Recently working on a black walnut table using 50 bf and a desk using 30 bf of hard maple. How does the drum handle this type of load? Have you had any issues with the filter clogging on you? How does it work with smaller tools such as random orbital sanders and routers? Thank you in advance
@FishersShop
@FishersShop Год назад
Yes, it works phenomenally. If you're a full-time shop, I'd recommend getting the larger drum size though otherwise you'll be emptying it more often than you want to. I've never had to get a new filter either. I just keep using the reverse suction lever every so often and it cleans itself. The static pressure is so high on this unit that it works amazingly well no matter what you hook it up to. As an example, the static pressure of the big Laguna P-Flux is like 7. This Supercell is over 90! Basically, that means even if you choke it down, to hook it on smaller tools, it doesn't lose suction. In fact, I've had to install a Y-fitting in my 4" hose with a blast gate to nothing so that I can open it halfway to throttle back the suction when putting it on smaller tools (belt sander, strip sander, etc.) because the suction is so strong.

@ronquay5836
@ronquay5836 Год назад
I've had the Supercell for about a year now and I love it but there are a few things I'd like to see changed. 1) there needs to be a way to hold the drum down when your pulsing the system to clean the filter. There is so much suction it lifts the drum off the floor and slams it down. 2) The remote is terrible. I'm on my 2nd one and have to be within about 5ft for it to work. 3) The vac overheats and shuts down. I spoke with service and had to adjust the switch to remedy. It helped but still shuts down on occasion. 4) Oneida needs to have a longer 5 inch heavy duty hose available for between the vac and the collection drum. I mounted my Supercell above a bench with the drum under the bench and the hose they send was too short for what I was trying to do. I could not find a hose heavy duty enough to handle the negative pressure. It would just collapse them. Oneida does not sell a longer one in the 5 inch. 5) lastly... They need to put something in their literature about using smaller hoses. Yes... You can use a smaller hose to a domino or orbital sander but you need to have a Y somewhere that you can also leave open or it puts too much back pressure on the vac. I have a 4 inch to 2 inch Y so that I can leave one side of the Y open and I am never reducing below 3 total inches. Again.... I love the vac and it is a great solution. Fixing some of these issues would make it an unbeatable system.

1) Sounds like you mounted it too high on the wall? 2) Hmm, still on my first and never had an issue. I did notice that if it's sitting on something conductive that it won't work. I have to pick it up to use it. 3) Never once had this issue and I've run mine for hours at a time during long milling sessions 4) I agree. I needed to get something much longer 5) Yup, you're right. I had to do just that because when I hooked it direction up to my smaller tools, it sounded like it was going to take off like a rocket

Great video for someone to use as a reference should they get one of these dust collectors. I've shied away from Oneida's big dust collectors after a bad experience with them a couple of years ago. Their Dust Deputy and a shop-vac are an absolute must have for any small shop. The outtakes are still worth a thumbs up on their own :)

What kind of electrical socket/power requirement does that unit need? I have a laguna pflux 1.5 and it needed a 220v circuit (or a 30 amp 110v, so 220 was easier), but the laguna is larger than yours so I am curious what yours needed for electric.

ok, I get this thing has suction covered, but can it be used effectively on say a drum sander? Oneida claims this has an equivalent 450cfm of air movement. That is a borderline CFM for a drum sander. Would love to hear from anyone that has used a SuperCell in combination with a drum sander like the Performax 19-38.

Works fine with mine but my drum sander is a small 10-20. Not sure how it would work on the bigger ones.

Well after a month of waiting, mine was finally delivered. Should finish up installing tomorrow. I appreciate your video, as I referred to it a couple of times since I found their instructions not totally clear. Had the video camera been capturing every moment, the outtakes alone would have taken an hour!

If there is no speed control on the motor, reducing the air hose from 4" to 2-2.5" will burn your motor out over time....

Right. I have an empty blast gate that I use to throttle the suction that goes to the smaller hose.

I received my supercell and I am very happy. I setup my system with the 14 gallon bin, but I mounted it up 4 feet setting up system on my bench and then lifting it up to the hangers for the bracket. I then installed the bin but later removed the wheels on the bin. It is easy to remove clean and replace the bin plus the system is up and away giving me more room. When I need to service the filter I will loosen the bracket bolts and with help move the supercell to my bench. Love the supercell!
