Your parents' garden center gets so many different and unusual varieties of plants. Some I have not seen before. Your mother does a great job of ordering different plants instead of the same old, same old varieties you see every year at the big box stores. I wish I lived around your area because I would go crazy buying many of the different varieties of herbs and flowers and the David Austen roses. Just a lovely selection to choose from. Happy Gardening!

Yes. Jealous. My local nurseries are in a rut of offering the same things from year to year, I think nurseries that are managed by a passionate gardener are better stocked.

I agree with Cynthia. I’ve given up trying to get them to order plants I’ve seen and just order directly from either PW or other nurseries. The sad thing is, it’s the nursery I go to is considered one of the best in the state. Go figure! They just have a very tight formula of items they order, and will not deviate from that. I know part of the family and I know that to be a fact. Would love to go shopping with Laura sometime. The only problem is she’s on the West Coast and I am Midwest so I don’t see that ever happening.

I just love it when you go through all the new fresh plants at your parent's nursery that have come in, I was so excited to see it all and what next you were going to show us. I have that creeping Veroncia you mentioned and I live in northeast GA 7b hardy zone and back in December the week of Christmas we got some freezing 🥶 single digit temps (very unusual for us) consecutively and surprisely it did keep it's foilage amongst other hardy plants that took a hard hit and suffered leaf lost, so it's definitely a great one to have. The Chicago Hardy Figs look awesome! 😍 Thank you again, Laura for sharing your plant shopping trip with us. As always, so very fun to watch!

Back in February '87, we had either straight line winds or a tornado which did not get all the way to the ground. I live on a heavily wooded lot with a few pines and a ton of sweetgums. One of the trees I chose to close an empty gap was a saucer magnolia. While most springs there is the caramel frost-look on the blooms from cold that came after the warm, the shade from the beautiful leaves is divine. That shade is where the humpback hostas, burgundy glow ajugas and recently planted trilliums live with a few Spanish bluebells and hellebores. The last two springs, the saucer magnolia blooms escaped with no damage! A sight to behold!

So fun, thanks Laura! I live in zone 8a on the NC coast so we are a little ahead of you, but I love your words of advice and experience with some of the same plants I'm excited to grow. You're the one who introduced me to Veronica and in our extremely sandy soil it's one of the best performers in my garden, it's coming back beautifully. Plants have to be tough to come back in pure sand soil and Veronica, Pincushion, Black Eye'd Susans, Bee balm, Sage and Salvia, Coreopsis, and Sedums are some of the tough guys I love. I'm hoping to find some Joe Pye Weed and Border Penstemons to try out this year.

After starting a portage garden for my 83 year old mother and I too grow our own vegetables and flowers, it would be a big help to have a Aerobin Composter to create organic soil from yard clippings and weeding to keep raised beds at optimal levels with the added benefit of saving on soil purchase. Dreaming BIG, hoping to save up for a greenhouse just like or a little bigger one that Laura installed at her sister-in-laws home, too to winterize some citrus and other trees that cannot withstand cold GA winters.

Climbers as a backdrop for your benches in the south garden circle would be amazing! I miss having a garden but you've shown some great ideas for balcony planting😊. It would be fun to try a checkerboard layout with the ground covers👍. Yay Spring!🌱🌞💐🌷🌼

Lambs ear naturalizes here in zone 9b, a house down the street from us usually has some growing in the sidewalk cracks in front of their garden.

Laura, thank you for the awesome tour of new plants at the Garden Center. I want to up my ground-cover game, too. I'm with you--plant shopping is my favorite.
