This week I'll be giving a (very) brief overview of 18th c fashion- starting with the basics of shopping! While second hand stores and slop shops for loose working clothes did exist, the majority of clothing came from three major trades. Meaning even a cheap gown or suit was a custom order! Imagine that!

The biggest advantage to that kind of shopping is having your clothing made in the styles and colors that you want. The disadvantage is having to wait for it to be made.

In Jane Austen's Emma (early 19th century I know) there is a mention of the shop where the girls buy they ribbons and gloves and stuff, delivering the goods to the house. So taking things home with you right from the shop might not be happening just yet.

Wait. Women were getting fitted for stays by men? Not sure why I find that so surprising but I do.

Because it is the most structured garment. That's the tailor's expertise.

@@acelibrarian Well men obviously dominated the taloring industry. So it's obvious that men would do the stays :)

What was the word for the maker of gowns? I couldn’t understand the word.

FWIW: I semi-taught myself to use a sewing machine years ago. Why? EVER SEWN A KITE BY HAND?? I sewed at least two MANY YEARS AGO, and HAND SEWING THEM was NOT IN THE CARDS. If I EVER sew any more KITES in the future, THEY will NOT be handsewn, either...😊
