If you research the quartet--They ARE Canadians. shoptimusprimequartet.com/about/ They are referencing the fact that unfortunately very few non-American quartets ever win the Barbershop Harmony first place award (Musical Island Boys was only the 2nd non-American quartet to win Gold). So they're basically saying the odds are against them because they are Canadians. And yes! They were joking! 😄 The audience got that, which is why they received a standing ovation on both of their contest songs.

They’ve got hockey jerseys on, and yes, even though they’re dissing other quartets, it’s all in good fun and we Canadians are allowed to diss people.
