Shoreditch on Sea - Londoners head for the coast

Even buying in a run-down future hotspot is beyond most trapped in so called Generation Rent, and many talented Londoners are now simply leaving the capital. The once derelict seaside town of Margate has become a favourite. Mark Jordan has joined the pioneers creating their very own Shoreditch on Sea.

Ladies, ladies! Put the handbags away! I wasn't trying to inflame a culture war here! 🤣 I think it's a bit rich to say a city of 8million people all hold the same cultural and political opinions! It's just the perceived wasteland of parochial bores, and places to throw rubbish onto after walking around the car park on a bank holiday weekend outside of the M25 that they all agree on! 😂

I used to live 10 miles from the coast and had a car at the time. Went there very often, even for a pointless stroll at 8pm on a summer's evening straight after work. I just loved the feeling of looking out to nothing, watching boats on the horizon, feeling the breeze and listening to the tide lapping in and out... it was heaven. It taught me that I actually really like living near water and lots of people would agree. The coast is very popular with young people. --- I'm now 31 and have never lived or worked in London. I would consider a commute to work there, but live there? Absolutely not. I'm too used to a much higher quality of life that would be totally impossible in London unless I was earning nearly six figures. That is just not feasible.
@alexanderkubanski9563
@alexanderkubanski9563 5 лет назад
Well said. To have a high standard of living in London, you need to earn 7 figures really. And even on 7 figures, is your quality of life better than people who live near the coast? People in London may have more stuff, but are they happy? 95% of the people in London live a life way out of balance

"do you live to work or do you work to live" is a phrase that I think reinforces the idea that all work just has to be a necessary evil that's in the way of day to day life. I think that this is a harmful way of thinking. A lot of us do live to work, we love our jobs, we take pride in what we do, the service we provide, the things we make, it gives us purpose and a sense of pride and fulfillment in day to day life in an otherwise pointless world. The idea that if you're not burning away tonnes of cash on pointless vanity items, holidays etc that you're not living is a toxic attitude that ultimately makes selfish, unfulfilled people that only care what they look like in a photo. We should work to change work culture, so that jobs are not just a necessary evil to pay the bills, but something fulfilling and worthwhile.

The people who made this film have deliberately shown the worst parts of the town and ignored the best and beautiful parts. We rent a small cottage in the old town of Margate, it’s beautiful and reasonably prices, only two minutes from the Turner Centre, old Harbor and the beach. It’s surrounded by o-en countryside and only a few miles from Canterbury. Fantastic place. Look for holiday cottage Margate on line and then find the two cottages in love lane by the market place. Brilliant.

The creative people are now independent of physical location and have copped on that a high cost of living can be tempered by reducing the costs even if this means having a lower income in a cheaper location. The same mechanism is happening in other countries, the lady at 7.11 mentions Dublin as being a cheap location, she is very wrong. Inner city Dublin is now very expensive with rents for basic 2 bed appartments now approaching €2,000 per month and landlords demanding 2 or three months rent in advance as a deposit. The references and employer records and financial information required has reached comically intrusive levels. Many large MNC's have to buy and let out properties in order to ensure a steady inward flow of employees. This is now the number one constraint to Dublins economic development and growth. For a small and isolated city on the edge of Europe Dublins rents are nearly as dear as Paris or Berlin and nearly as dear as Londons, an insane level of rent.

Nearly 60 million of lottery and arts council money has been put in to The Turner contemporary and Dreamland , that’s a lot of money for a few cafes and a few vintage shops. You don’t build an economy subsidising people’s hobby’s . Read The book by Tracy Emin it is very good . There is also a lot of petty crime in Margate due to the large amount of unemployed .

Yes, but what is not mentioned in this documentary is the price of a season ticket from Margate to London: it''s nearly £6000. Additionally, this documentary fails to mention the huge positives of working and living in London. It's an economic,political, social and technological cluster. Few cities can match this. Perhaps New York or Tokyo. Cluster of banking, insurance, Digital start-ups, access to legal knowledge and ithe heart of political power is essential for large corporations. Where else will you find such a concentration of interconnected businesses? Of course, silly me: Margate or Hastings. London is so big it's like a black hole: it sucks in everything around it. So, the commentators on this program who call it Shoreditch-On'Sea and predict that London will soon become a ghost town because it's all happening in Margate have little or no knowledge of how a capital city works. Additionally, I suspect they've had a liquid lunch prior to being interviewed. I would rather live in near-by Hastings than Margate, and even then I'd have to be dragged down to Hastings kicking and screaming. They're both toilet holes!! That's why they put unemployed people down there

If your new home in Margate is a bungalow to retire in you are looking at spending £300.00 plus for a 2 bed & £500.00 plus for a 3 bed. Parts of Margate is run down & you can buy those properties, houses & flats, at a reasonable price but you have to factor in the renovation costs. The North winds blow so is cooler than other seaside towns. High Streets are fading because of new shopping malls. Regeneration is slow. Dreamland is on/off & no perks if you are a resident. Great transport links to London. Good local transport so long as you are on the loop route. Routes can change at barely any notice. Nice sandy beaches not horrible pebble/ gravel beaches & lots of beaches to visit.

Oligarchs and wealthy property investors and the likes...London has an affordable housing crisis in that developers are looking to make as much money as possible and thus tend to build luxury/expensive properties which gentrifies an area. This means the area becomes more in-demand/fashionable and thus more expensive. Rich investors (some foreign, who might not ever step foot in the UK) then buy the properties and often leave them vacant as they're using them simply as an investment - as the housing market rises, their property becomes worth more. It's a vicious circle. Maybe you should study economics sometime babe x
@CharlieMess

Currently there are over 20,000 homes in central London that are completely vacant (stats taken from The Metro, 2017, and The Telegraph, 2018). If your 'typical' economic migrant is causing the housing crisis, why are these homes empty? Or are you at odds with factual statistics? Speaking of logic, you were the one who was insinuating a modus tollens argument which, whilst valid, was not logically sound, given what you were insinuating. London immigration is not the reason why rents are high it's due economics and earning ,it was poor immigrants coming into London working long hours and contributing just like the British born were too nowadays London is rapidly being gentrified and new high earners are coming in and pushing and pricing many out and rentals have gone through the roof ,these new comers gentrifiers don't care about the born and bred and locals who made London what it is today ,now you have so much new faces and people who lived in London are segregated all over the country in places they don't want to live in such a shame but nothing last forever.

You give a man the opportunity to make money off of his fellow men and he will. Housing is a right. Houses and flats should be given by the state, not hoarded by greedy rich people to drive poor people into debt or exile. Yes, I am saying implementation of socialism is necessary.

housing is a right, who dreamt that up. if you can't afford london, there is a whole world out there to go to , get a job somewhere else where rent is cheap , save your money and maybe someday go back to london when you could afford it. If nobody made money on housing, none would be built. incidentally who is paying for your housing that you have a right to. millennials think it falls from trees. gee , i worked hard saved and sacrificed and bought my own home. boy did i screw up.

@@Tony-hx2fj Tony, you're an idiot. "if you can't afford london, there is a whole world out there to go to , get a job somewhere else where rent is cheap , save your money and maybe someday go back to london when you could afford it. " tell that to the nurse, teacher, bus driver, or even doctor you can't afford to live in London anymore. tell us, wont you, who is going to do the work if everyone leaves. moron.

@@harrybarker4370 how could you blame the average american wage earner . They just did the best they could for their families. It was crooked deceitful politicians and wall street that controls everything. Just like politicians now , many of us saw what was happening but what could you do, whoever you voted for were dirty in the pockets of wall street. I think you are very wrong in blaming hard working americans like myself for trying to save for the future . I own 2 rentals I bought in 2008 when things were dirt dirt dirt cheap with low interest rates unheard of. Many people of your generation could have bought then if you were savers like me.

@@harrybarker4370 also, I am 68 now , we didnt have so many ways to spend money, no $1000 apple computers, cell phone $80 /mo, high car insurance, going out to restaurants was rare, What I believe ruined things for your generation was all of the environmental laws, restrictions that were instituted along with politicians sending jobs over seas and breaking up of the unions. Big Business took over, it was their greed that sent all the jobs overseas. Finally in the 70s wages were fair, but that didnt last long. Look at what happened to Rust Belt , Detroit, etc. You are blaming the wrong people.
