The .357 magnum did great. I was a little nervous about the light for caliber on the .40. I think a heavier bullet would be better: 155 to 180 grain would give you more mass for better penetration. Still, expansion was ideal...
That Barnes .357 load is what I keep in my nightstand gun. It’s a 3” SP101. Recoil is surprisingly light out of the Ruger but it’s def got some kick. When I work nights I swap to Critical Defense 110 grain .38 +P for the wife.
I have a 3" SP101 as well... I shot a cylinder of Underwood self-defense rounds through it last week (just to test them); louder than range ammo, but I think the mass of this revolver absorbs the shock of the blast very well.
That critical defense 110 grain .38+p is absolutely the best. It hits where I am aiming. Tight groups out of my Ruger lcr. 357 mag. I use the ammo that works best.
@@GunSam The 140 grain makes about 1340 through the same 6" revolver. They are currently my favorite loads. The 125 for awkward social situations and the 140 for hiking and woods walking.
@@brianmoore1164 I hope you're not relying on that 140gr HP for black bears. They will not penetrate enough, not even half enough. Carry hardcast or Underwood Xtreme Defenders at the minimum.
I think the .40 S&W was skimping on powder. If it was moving out another 150 or so FPS, it would have done admirably. As usual, the .357mag continues to get the job done.
Great video Sam! I've started utilizing both calibers into my EDC rotation along with .357 SIG. (Very impressed with all three calibers!) Love also utilizing the versatile .357 Magnum revolvers for pocket/backup gun carry.
I’m usually disappointed in Barnes loading of these rounds as while the results on target are decent the velocities are usually lower than what I would like or expect. The 357 broke the mold with that one giving full power 357 magnum energy for its weight. A great test.
thank you. my 2 favorite carry rounds. my go to is the 605 appendix backed with an astra a75 .40 cal weak hand (rh for me) appendix. i can carry both totally concealed with a t-shirt this way and can press the 605 into someone without going out of battery. if 5 357's don't work, 7 40's are there if needed. it also doesn't hurt to have an lcp2 in the pocket, as well.
Gun Sam. My 357 carry is an old ruger security 6 4". 357. I love that pistol. I inherited it. Its very accurate. And my only semi is a colt 1911 45 acp. You shot very well . Full house 357s in my ruger let you know your firing a powerful revolver. I cant imagine out of 2". . God bless😊
I’d like to see a 9mm and 45 test of this ammo, especially the 9mm, I’m looking to go with this ammo for carry in those calibers as well. Your looking good, hope the health continues to be stable.
I love the closer distances being used here, especially for those of us interested in self-defense. I personally feel that the FBI requirements are not very useful for me when it comes to self-defense. If I'm shooting sideways through someone's arm to reach a vital in a self-defense situation, I might have a lot of explaining to do in court as to why I felt in danger from someone not facing me. Those FBI requirements seem more applicable to the police or military, or very very very fringe cases of citizen self-defense That would require such a shot.
.357 looks good for 3"-4". My 40 ACTUAL FBI data went live yesterday and Paul Harrell Tribute tomorrow! Then "Modern Meat Target" tests start following week everyone plz support! can you finish up 40 great again with all the Oddball stuff I sent and Hornadys and ur new short barrel? My hands not working today
I looked at them a few days ago trying to figure out how to present a video on them. There's several each of the XTP like loads and a poweRball but i'm not sure how to go about it with random weights and not knowing which is which.
@@GunSam Try to make a not a serious Fun one...Say something like "In out previous three Make .40 great again Videos with all the LE trade in ammo DanTheWolfman sent, all of them performed great other than UMC which should prove .40 doesn't SUCK like modern internet group parroting hearsay says. Out of curiosity let's see how "Even Random .40 from Short Barrel Doesn't SUCK like Internet Claims!". If in the Upcoming Apocalypse all you could find was a short barreled forty, and had a pillow case of Random ammo you were able to scrounge, how well armed would you be?... Do them all into REAL WORLD Testing protocol Say "this looks like maybe a ...... but not positive (U could also put all on kitchen scale and try to figure out which ones are LIGHT for caliber and which ones 180 gr if you felt the need). If most go 10-24" and some expand even from short barrel I think that will further prove our point. I just think a Fun one to prove some points would be fun and why sent you the random stuff I didn't have too many of. Heck you could even do a RANDOM series after that in each Caliber....Shoot 6 different rounds in each RANDOM CALIBER Vid through MDF to get a sense of each caliber might be fun to shake things up a bit. Something like that, PLEASE...And if you can somehow plug "DanTheWolfman has started to do his MODERN MEAT TARGET testing" so it's interesting to compare performance in different types of testing protocol, like My Real World MDF protocol that makes Clear Ballistics more valid to Meat Target testing to the few Organic Gel testers out there with different types and layers of clothing or through bone or MDF. So it's good to see how calibers and various rounds perform in different testing protocols so people can make up their own informed opinions.
Happy to see the .40 cal working as well as my old PT140 does....And I swapped the mag release as well to stop my issues. Wonder what the 357 would do out of the 3" 605. Cheers!
Like this in 357 mag but for 40s&w HST and gold dot seem to do better penetration wise. I do carry the Barnes or Buffalo bore low recoil in my snub nose revolvers. I wish Winchester ranger would expand out of my shield my in my water jugs with denim I only got 1 out of 4 to expand.
Great review. My read on this... I don't like this loading in the 40 at all. Not really that great in .357 Mag either. I'm sticking with my 180 gr HST for my 40 and 140 grain 38 Spcl +P lehigh bullet handloads for the snub 605. Each is carried for diff situations....
2 of my favorite calibers. The concussion from the Magnum should be pretty bad. Perhaps this wasn't a very good batch. I wouldn't carry it. Thanks Mr. Sam.
That version of the .40 seems a little weak. Both are serious considerations. I'll take .40 anyday. Capacity is a higher consideration for me. Sure strike accuracy is important to not just be tossing lead, but the extra standard capacity mags are a winner. There are other much better performing .40's as you have shown before.
.357 with a 200 grain hardcast at about 70% load strength might be a better mix for the short gun. Still hotter than +P but not so brutal on the gun or you.
As a 40 guy I'm not sure I really see the point of this round. It's weak in terms of velocity/energy for a light round, doesn't penetrate a ton, and doesn't expand better than cheaper jhp rounds.
Currently I swapped the magazine release to prevent as much unintentional hitting it as possible. I started having more issues with hotter ammo, but avoiding squeezing the bottom of the magazine helped, as I think i'm always slightly touching the mag release and that in addition to squeezing on the base plate popped it out, caused jam. I also ordered a Hogue slip on beavertail grip to hopefully keep my hand further away from the mag release.
3-3/4" is about as short as they come, in a single-action world. 4-5/8" if the ejector rod remains full length. Charter Arms runs a 2-1/2" in a snub double action.
