Short Circuit 1 and 2 are nothing short of creative masterpieces. Really under-appreciated. It’s impressive to get J5 looking this good in the 80s. Motions seem very genuine, not too janky and it’s just awesome.
I'm sitting here marveling at the workmanship of Johnny 5's modelling and puppetry. An actual physical object in set with the actors looks soo much more impressive nowadays ( when done right ).
There was apparently a few people required to control him (which makes sense, he's a complex robot) Bit it's just amazing that there was basically no automation at all, that it was just a group of people making him seek so lifelike Even though we can see he's a machine
I think it shows that the "hero" animatronic of No. 5 was built with little regard to cost. The first one came in at over $175,000...so you can adjust that for inflation.
Don't understand why this movie name is not taken along with other 80's movies like Breakfast Club, St. Elmo's Fire etc. Watched it a million times since I was a kid. LOOVE THIS MOVIE!
Exactly. I watched Short Circuit and Short Circuit 2 a million times, hell I still watch them both a lot to this day! I just love those movies. The Character of Johnny Five, the design of the robot, the puppeter work, the charm these movies have. I love that it's all practical effects.
As he was fond of referencing TV and movies, appropriately that was another reference. "Well, isn't that special!" was the catchphrase of SNL's church lady. And when he says it, he uses the same intonation she did.

Creatures and robots from that era of movies we're just so much fun, i grew up always wanting a pet mogwai Who wouldn't love their own little gizmo or to have a pet falcore the giant flying dog from the never ending story
The 1980s I believe was the best time for movies. So many good stories, music, and the pratical effects were amazing. Truly wonderful. You will never get this again. Now it is all CGI and explosions.
I'm British born with Indian roots. I NEVER had a problem with Fisher Stevens. He performed the role with respect and was so convincing I never realised he was played by a white actor until much later in life! Short Circuit is the best!
i always doubted if he was really from India or not, i never knew his name,and i came here now from Columbo filmed in 1989,and that i watched just now on TV.
Alongside Johnny, his character was my favourite as a child. I had no idea then he wasn't really of Indian descent - but I grew up respecting people just like the character he portrayed.
it's beautiful that Ben helped created number 5 and this is Ben first full interaction/actual meeting #5 despite being in the first movie and knowing each other this is the first time Bens actually taking in what #5 actually is. Alive
@@HolowatyVlogs I'll always remember him from this movie but these days 'Chuck" is taking over. His masterful performance in Better Call Saul was incredible.
@@kovacs88 in the movie he acts a lot more like Jimmy at first ; tries to sell Johnny 5 to cash in. If this was Chuck in the past this version would get along with Jimmy a lot better. He’s a sleazy businessman rather than an uptight lawyer.
I will never tire if watching this movie! Except when he gets um, injuredem. I saw it with my dad right before he passed away. Now as an adult, I catch all kinds of little details I missed. I'm surprised they haven't brought him back! I never watched Chappie again though, because he gets attacked. For that era in movies, I thought it was well-done especially pulling in your heart strings with J5.
I will never NOT sob like a baby at that scene and the aftermath... and I will never not CHEER like a maniacal fan girl as he puts himself back together and goes to battle!!
When I first saw this movie I really liked it especially with the return of Number 5 or as he now calls himself Johnny 5 as he sure knows how to make an entrance and he did a really great impersonation of Stephanie when he read her letter to Ben and Fred.
Agreed. It's a great performance. also the performance of the robot, all the puppeters and Tim Blaney providing the voice and personality of Johnny Five really brings him to life and makes you believe he's really alive in the movie and forget he's being controlled by puppeters. This was excellently done.
Until this day I thought that was an Indian guy! Watched this movie as a kid and with my kids and only just found out in these comments....I did a good job tbf....great characters all of them.

There's also a short that takes place after the 2nd movie. It's about Johnny getting a house or apartment somewhere in New York, and there are car thefts in the area. It only lasts about 20 minutes, and I haven't seen it.
Along with Congo (talking gorilla) Blue Lagoon (you know why I'd like that as a young boy) Tommy Boy and Short Circuit, I absolutely loved movies in the 90s. Haha
1:24 I remember when Pizzaville boxes were red & white, plus had the slogan “Quite simply better pizza”. Today they’re brown like Pizzahut boxes and the slogan has been removed.
In a couple more years, a robot enthusiast kid will be able to put something like that together from a cheap kit off amazon, with an off the shelf Nvidia AI chip.
