Michael McKean should have won an award for his acting in this movie. He does a perfect job interacting with the robot. It's almost a lost art form of actors having to interact with things that are not really there or alive.
Its actually easier to interact with a physical puppet because they can just have a speaker inside the puppet for the voice actor to speak through. What is harder is when its trying to interact with something that isn't there because it will be realized through the use of CGI.
Don't you think the Indian guy should get an award for acting as an Indian guy even though he he white. That's a lost art and a will never happen again
@TheSimmus Yes that was funny. I'm guessing either Fred and Johnny 5 escaped from those cops and/or Fred talked to them and said that it's okay that they don't have to take the books away where Fred must have bought the books for Johnny 5 which explains why he said that he got him some input.
+Dwurban MC That was funny how he gasped. I'm guessing Fred bailed him out so they wouldn't take the books away which is why Johnny 5 has the books still.
would've taken allot of explaining when you think about it. Yeah my sentient robot friend with all consuming hunger for input trashed your store cos he wanted to read several dozen books
Johnny Five with WiFi is basically Ultron, right? Or Skynet. Or Colossus…If he could link up to all the other computers in the world he might decide to either subjugate the human race or annihilate it.
@@bratton79 I wish people could simply download skills they needed like what was done in one of the matrix movies when a character needed to fly the helicopter and she requested a manual and it was uploaded to her brain and then she could fly.
@@coondogtheman I’ve had that same thought, that important job skills could just be downloaded to the human brain. I’d download Spanish and then I’d go with algebra and then the dictionary, see, I wouldn’t abuse it and just have major league baseball player instantly learned. I just want to be slightly more successful than I am now. I wouldn’t need more than a six figure annual salary to get by.
INPUT, INPUT, INPUT, WWIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!! How adorable was that? ☺️🥰☺️ Ji ji... Got to watch it three times last week - and I' ve been watching it since I was 8 years old... I ADORE THIS MOVIE!!! 👏🏻👏🏻💫💫💫
The movie was shot in Toronto. The World's Largest Bookstore actually exists. It's on Edward St, one block off Yonge St. in the heart of downtown. I've been there many, many times. It's always a "must" whenever I visit T.O.
If memory serves, he states that he has 500MB *online* which, and I could be wrong, might be referring to RAM. I know we've come a long way in that department since then, but back in the 80s, 500MB RAM was pretty top shelf.
LethalLaurie I know, that's the joke. Not sure about what they meant about it being online, but I'm pretty sure that just means onboard running, not necessarily referring or differentiating between ram or otherwise. I could be wrong though.
I think that was just to differentiate it from *storage* memory, which let's face it even back then would have to be way more than 500MB in order for Johnny to even be able to function in the world without reaching input capacity in like five minutes flat.
500 megabytes of plain text, is a lot of information though. A normal modern desktop is incredible stuff, it's just that we need to watch cat videos in 4k
+No'tur Beeswax That would be great too since at the end of this film it showed Ben and Fred starting their own business with Johnny 5 as their partner where the third film can be about Ben and Sandy married including having Stephanie Speck and Newton Crosby coming by to visit to see Johnny 5's business and then maybe showing a scene of Oscar and his henchmen escaping from jail getting another attempt to smash and destroy Johnny 5 even though Oscar is probably scared of him where he tried escaping away in a boat calling him a punishment from God.
@@jedijones Yes, I know the actor who played as Oscar died but, if they were going to use his character again for a third film if they make one, they would need a new actor. Yes, it would be great if they made a third film where it could be about Ben and Fred showing them working at their jobs with Stephanie Speck and Newton Crosby coming to visit Johnny 5 and Oscar and his henchmen escape from jail and Skroeder and his army soldiers come to destroy Johnny 5 and they work together with Oscar and his henchmen.
Seeing this brings back memories, and makes me ask questions. What would he do with internet? What would he do with a certain 40% of the internet? Who would win if he battled ED-209?
"see those 2 guys" "ya" "they wanna take your books away" "GASP!**" rofl fucking loved this when i was a kid, when a VHS was considered the piniacle of movie entertainment lo l
+jhhwild That would be great if they made a third film since at the end of this film it showed Ben and Fred starting their own business with Johnny 5 as their partner where the third film can be about Ben and Sandy married including having Stephanie Speck and Newton Crosby coming by to visit to see Johnny 5's business and then maybe showing a scene of Oscar and his henchmen escaping from jail getting another attempt to smash and destroy Johnny 5 even though Oscar is probably scared of him where he tried escaping away in a boat calling him a punishment from God.
@@afriendofbeanor Oscar and his thugs meet Schroeder and Schroeder wanted to destroy J5 as well out for revenge for getting himself fired from Nova and getting humiliated for only destroy a fake. (Which likely Schroeder and Oscar keep arguing mainly to show whose the top guy of the operation)
@@okamijubei Yes, that would be a good idea on a third film if Oscar and his henchmen meet Schroeder and argue (that is, if Oscar and his henchmen escape from jail). However, I'm wondering at this point if everyone from Nova including Dr. Marner lost touch with Schroeder and the moment Schroeder and his soldiers assumed they destroyed Johnny 5, Johnny 5 (who was Number 5 at the time), Stephanie Speck, and Newton Crosby never went back which would mean Schroeder would be staying close to Nova to cause more trouble to the company not giving Schroeder a reason to go to New York where Johnny 5 is.
That;s my favorite scene! Johnny was messy throwing the books in a big pile.I always wanted to visit this bookstore and it's a shame it's closed forever.
Likely he wanted to know about sex (on Knowing how us organics repopulate and likely he'll use the information to help Newton and Benjamin how with Stephanie and Sandy which likely only embarrassed and ruin the moment and making it awkward)
@jamespic What's even funnier is, they were able to avoid the guards by simply leaving the bookstore...guess those two were absent during "How to find the front door" part of their training.
+Casimus Prime He probably wouldn't care because everything he sees and hears is excellent input to him which is why it was mentioned in the beginning of the movie that if he sees that he's in a city with tall buildings and a lot of people, he will get overexcited which he did and Ben tried keeping him in the warehouse to prevent him from seeing the city.
I hope CHAPTERS NEVER takes off the front sign of that store...As far as Im concerned, that building is a historical landmark. This is why Toronto is such a great place to film a movie.
Or maybe would've been enthusiastic with him. And teaches him Friendship and possibly curious about what he's suppose to be and wonder what is a robot.
@@goldenvulture6818 been on the decline since the super information highway aka the internet. not to mention e-books, audiobooks have gain in popularity.
At 1:23, I'm assuming Fred spoke to those two cops to prevent Johnny 5 from buying those books just so Johnny 5 could buy them since his books weren't taken away.
This was the worst place I ever worked. At the time, the management team was horrific; it was led by a creepy and wretched woman named Christine, who was the head of the snake. I had never seen such a vindictive, childish person like her in charge of a group of people. There were other monsters on that team - Michael, a manipulative, selfish sociopath, Justin, a clueless clodpole who couldn't even count change, Selma, a cantankerous witch, and a cash supervisor named Katina, who was a passive aggressive termagant. They were indiscriminate about the victims they picked as their whipping boys/whipping girls and would often poison the minds of the entire staff against those that they targeted. I hope they never found jobs after this store closed. The only place they truly belong is inside a padded cell.
Proof that technology is moving backwards...He had only 512 Megabytes of memory when most of our "modern" day computers have 4-8 GIGABYTES and they still can't do the things that he does!! Where are all the flying cars?! LOL
@buddhasknowbest I've been there many times. It's a "must" every time I visit T.O. The movie was shot in downtown Toronto. The corners opposite the Eaton Centre have sure changed since the movie was filmed. But Chinatown on Dundas is still the same. Toronto is my favorite city to visit for vacation. We're only across the lake near Rochester, but now it's a hassle to go there because of the border crossing rules. We've gone from three or four visits annually to one, if at all. Darn terrorists.
Someone should put this store in the game 7 days to die as a prefab and you could go in and read all the recipe books you want like J5 did in this movie.
If I'm working at the store that I work at and a machine or robot came over and asked me if it could have a a book is it called me a crap head it probably would be in the same amount of emotional disbelief that she's in
Could have sworn in the past he said everything you Ever wanted to know about sex. Everything you always wanted to know doesn't sound right to me for whatever reason. Oh well Great movie!!!!!!!!
