From August 1, 1977, here is a newsman breaking up as he announces the death of Francis Gary Powers (who was a helicopter pilot for KNBC, the station that is featured here) and an engineer, in a helicopter crash. Francis Gary Powers was the U-2 pilot that was shot down over Russia and captured in 1960. He was released and exchanged in 1962 for a captured Soviet KGB leader.

I can’t imagine giving a broadcast like that when someone you worked with died.

That'd be Jess Marlow at the anchor desk reporting on the death of his colleague.

I remember this well from watching it live. And this is probably the only time I've seen it since then. That's how memorable it is.

Powers might have been able to land that chopper...but he was headed right into a field where people were playing. He likely nosed the helicopter into the ground sacrificing his life and cameraman's in order to not harm those on the ground. A final act of selflessness that should be remembered. :)

He definitely was a fine person. I was lucky to know him and to work with him in Los Angeles radio. A good dude.
