the sad reality is many laws, rules, or regulations are written in the blood of those who died or were injured due to those rules, laws, or regs not existing yet. Especially in aviation. It is also likely someone DID bring up the issue, but it wasn't approved for financial reasons.

These guys operate in VFR, so the number of rules is actually shockingly minimal. I doubt they even file flight plans. They probably don't even have TCAS in these cheap choppers.

@@ZTenski How could they file a flight plan for a police chase lol There's no way to know where it'll end up and with 5 helicopters orbiting the same moving target there's really no way for a controller to help provide separation. This is VFR. They are responsible for their own separation. Really falls on the pilots for accepting the dangerous job and partly on the news stations for expecting pilots to fly and report

Ever see the LA sky at night? It's like an airshow in the dark.

Even flying VFR we have rules on separation, so it did surprise me seeing these guys so close together all at the same altitude. When it comes to TCAS, such a system would have been going off nonstop in this situation, so I’m certain that it’s something that was unused on these helicopters, either by design or by choice. This video shows just how close the one filming the two that crashed also was and within that distance any TCAS system would be screaming at one guy to claim and another to descend. I’m not a helo pilot so I can’t say much for what they have onboard, but I had always thought the pilot and copilot would have been the ones flying with one or the other controlling the camera, whilst a reporter sat in the back reporting. I find it hard to understand how the FAA permitted this kind of setup on news helicopters, but again, I’m no helo pilot and I’m not from the US.

They shouldn't, especially helicopter pilots. It takes an insane amount of concentration and skill to handle a helicopter smoothly, especially in close quarters with other aircraft. Even experienced pilots would still need to be fully aware of everything going on around them, and flying around in such close quarters is already dangerous at best. At bare minimum, there should have been a pilot, someone in charge of cameras, a reporter for commentary (if they insisted on having live commentary from the helicopter), and, if possible, a co-pilot to handle communications and keep an eye on the aircraft systems. Whoever decided that there should only be two people on board clearly had no idea how much skill and concentration it takes to fly a helicopter.

That's what our instructors tell us: Aviate, Navigate, Communicate -- in that order.

I just can't figure out how someone thought that would be a good idea. Not only would it be safer to have someone else do it, it would probably also lead to better quality reporting because that would be the only thing they're focusing on. It's just so god damn stupid.

I mean... if it's a low traffic area and you're going by what the control tower is giving you, not visual flight, flying actually requires less attention than driving- depending on the aircraft in question, of course. However this case? It's absolutely insane. Helicopters already require a lot more active input and a news helicopter pilot already has to worry about helping the cameraman get a good angle on things. And having all that additional work on top, commentating, communicating with the newsroom, listening to all those other frequencies... that's just crazy.

Sadly, this is how most crucial regulations come into place. Not because someone with forethought said "Hey this doesn't make sense, we should correct this issue!", but because some form of gruesome accident that forced the hands of those who make the rules. A lot of it comes down to too many problems, not enough people working on them.

@@jr2904 talking to your phone is one thing and in fact it's only illegal to do so while holding said phone because it leave you with only one hand to interract with the car controls. In many country you can talk to your phone with a handsfree kit. Op said texting which is radically different and not unlike what happened with those pilots. You could switch it with "reading a book while driving" or "watching a movie while driving" the idea is the same.

The helicopter was a sub contractor IIRC. So the station hired out the copter from another company.

It's the pilots responsibility. You know that's how it should be, because you're a professional pilot. So where they, it was THEIR responsibility to say "No, that is unsafe, I won't do that".

It's not really common practice. In Los Angeles many of the helicopter photographers are also reporters, but they are not the pilots. Stu Mundel is the photographer/reporter for FOX 11's Sky Fox chopper. He's a legend up there. But he does not pilot the aircraft.

Before automated traffic counting... there used to be solo traffic reporters who flew over cities every morning reporting on traffic jams. Both in helicopters and planes. It can be done... but the priority should be flying the aircraft... and that includes constantly looking for other air traffic in visual conditions. This guy failed in that basic task.

Media outlets care so much about the money they can make from sensationalism that the station execs were probably just thinking that besides the police car chase bumping up their ratings, the fatal chopper crash also caught on camera would just make it even better. They don't care. They weren't the ones killed. If they actually cared, they wouldn't have underpaid these dudes to do five other things at the same time they were engaged in the very serious business of flying a chopper

There are old pilots and there are bold pilots, but there are no old and bold pilots. Unfortunately, these pilots got a bit too caught up in the thrill of the chase. No doubt numerous other pilots turned this gig down precisely cause of the obvious safety issues. RIP to these souls and my condolences to their families.

it also happens with medevac and corporate flights where the pilots want to finnish the mission without much regard to meteorological conditions either for the sake of the patient or because the retards on board insist on getting to their destination at a certain time because they have to. usually ends up in multiple obits which end up in some interesting videos and safety reports on the hubris of humans without enough braincells or balls to say "no can do" when necessary. 😏

They did actually crash very frequently, but usually it was due to improper maintenance and just a single vehicle incident that rarely resulted in deaths.... theres dozens of videos of news choppers doing emergency landings and auto gyrating down and ive seen a couple that have collided with structures

Thankfully some better practices came out of this tragedy, like a copilot freeing the pilot from reporting, and helicopter sharing with separate commentary at each news room. The latter makes perfect sense in terms of safety and lower cost of operations. Also, using small drones instead of helicopters may be safer too.

I remember reading a comment from a guy who was a helicopter pilot during the Vietnam war and later on a commercial pilot. He said helicopters are inherently dangerous and that NO ONE should be using them for leisure, only when necessary. Sadly we've seen lots of rich and famous people die due to using helicopters for pleasure.

Agreed, although it's good to remember that we weren't in their shoes that day, we don't know what stresses and emotions they were feeling at the moment that was said.

I know, right! they were not part of the police/law enforcement attempting to capture the "suspect", if it was one of the patrol cars in pursuit who went off the road and burned in a fiery crash then yes, but not news helicopters, they had no law enforcement purpose to be there and they were not cars or pedestrians on the street hit by the "suspect's" vehicle while fleeing.

Of course they did, anything else would be un-american.

During the commission of a crime, if someone dies even if not directly due to the actions of the criminal, the criminal can be charged with first degree murder. For example, if during a bank robbery one of the customers has a heart attack shortly afterwards and dies later in the hospital, the state will file first degree murder charges against the robbers.

And then those vultures start filming the crash instead.

@@dbobocI’d argue their filming ultimately did good. The news coverage likely led to the new regulations for news helicopters being co-opted much more quickly than if it had simply happened without anyone batting an eye.

This is why regulation exists and why civil lawsuits for such srs injuries and deaths exist I hope that the four news workers who lost their lives did in the end get some justice here; and their family were able to win wrongful death lawsuits against the news agencies who thru their reckless negligence in the furtherance of small differences in profits/views Its so clearly cut and dry to me that the two news agencies (all of them rly, but these two are the ones that matter for civil suits) thru their choices of policies and procedures put their employees lives at risks, every day. This was just the day that their policies finally inevitably caused deaths to occur They no doubt tried to blame the pilots, but this is how literally all the pilots were doin things and its easy to prove that such practices were not just routinely done by all the pilots, but were also dangerously unsafe and recklessly endangered the lives of these workers. When company policies encourage unsafe practices; the company can and is often held accountable for any resultin catastrophes caused by their policies. This is why pizza places stopped advertisin hvily as havin super fast delivery; and have all srsly revised driver policies to make clear that the driver must obey all traffic laws. Drivers arent even given competition rewards for fastest deliveries anymore either, bcuz such incentives encouraged the brkin of traffic laws to achieve them. Like, imagine a racin game where you had to obey the traffic laws; the best race times wud end up bein very very similar, if not the same, in no short order. Bcuz you cant exactly get 30 miles any faster at 30mph than an hr; unless you brk either traffic laws or laws of physics. So since it was too easy for workers and their families to win civil suits for dmgs, either as a result of srs injury or wrongful death; the companies changed policy to stop losin money there, as the dmgs ended up nearin enuf, to cut into the profits gained by such unsafe practices, to matter to the bottom line No doubt the real reason news agencies changed policy after this was based solely on such legal logic only based reasonin; not out of a desire to not cause more death... just a desire to not lose money, and them realisin that a cheaper option existed which wud work just fine. Bcuz companies dont just change unsafe practices for the sake of protectin workers; they only ever do it cause it affects their bottom line

@rd2680 oh absolutely, I know there were definitely less altruistic reasons behind the willingness to change. But then again, I've seen more publicized incidents that are worse where the company in charge doesn't care at all.

He knew all four very well. At the time, four of the five helicopter crews were housed in the same hanger with the fifth (ABC15 crew) housed in another hanger about a quarter mile away in the same airpark.

next time use more brain and keep awareness at 101% at all times.

Others find profit motive in avoiding liabilities - realizing that more money spent on staff and equipment can save a lot in fines and lawsuits. Ridiculously dangerous workplaces exist for sure, but I've also seen quite a few bosses panic when they see sketchy work practices because of what it could cost them.

The pilots could have refused to do it, also.

(Other workers often have the highest casualty rate in job accidents.) But every job has a risk, ask a drunk, burnt out accountant or a homeless Hollywood hero.

Yes, this is the first time for sure that I've heard such a good description of the true workload the pilots were under. The context sets up everything so amazingly compared to just watching the footage and reading about the causes afterward.

Completely insane to have the pilot be responsible for watching and commentating on the ground events, when they are meant to be flying VFR.

Terrifying yes, but once you hit the ground it's over very quickly.

The video mentioned that they knew each other personally. The small-airplane community is tight knit, when someone goes down it's a major impact on the whole community. I don't know about helicopters but that's probably an even smaller community.

Uhm... do stupid things win stupid prizes? Did it not occur to these pilots there was a high chance of this happening? Seems like a very stupid idea to me and I don't even fly. And the cameramen riding with them, nobody forced them into those helicopters. Greed all around.

They all deserved what they got. I only feel sorry for any of their kids. 5 comms channels plus flying the helicopter plus reporting... everyone in the air should have known this was an eventuality.
