I agree. I was really surprised to hear such a beautiful voice. I wonder if she ever did any other acting, like in movies, or did any serious singing performances.
@@sblubaugh100 Her talent was somewhat underrated. Not by Lucy, that's for sure. When Lucy and Desi divorced in 1960 they made plans for The Lucy Show in 1962. Lucy practically begged Vance to co-star with her again. Vance tried to refuse but in the end the money was just too good to refuse. She commuted from her home in CT every week to CA! I think she stayed for 3 seasons then grew tired and left for good, but came back a few times. They were magic together. Lucy knew that.
Everyone is wonderful in this episode. But, I think Lucy's threading the needle and pretending to sew behind Ethel is genius. Who thought up this skit and put this in the show? Also, the choice of Shortnin Bread as Ethel's opening number is a hoot.
The gag of the plant getting bigger every time Fred walks across the stage was originally in a long-running Broadway musical comedy review called "Hellzapoppin'".
When Lucille and Vivian came back in "The Lucy Show," it wasn't the same. No male leads to play off of. And Lucille rarely gave Viv a chance to shine, as we see here.
Yeah, Lucille Ball seemed to think we all wanted to watch her corny, childish humour for every possible second of airtime. Instead of it being spread appropriately throughout ACTUAL song and dance. She was just jealous because she couldn't carry a tune in a bucket, and always seemed to forget that the contrast of musical performance interspersed with her silliness and enthusiasm is what made it funny, not her ineptitude on it's own.
@@Silversorcerer I'm not sure if my viewpoint was clear. I liked this ILL episode very much; it's really about Ethel, as were many episodes. Whereas post-ILL, that was almost never the case.
They were really brats on this episode . I just ordered the complete set of I love Lucy on Ebay and decided to watch Lucy instead of the news on tv. So I am going to read the bible and watch Lucy and wait for rapture....instead of news on the coronavirus and no more negetive stuff out there. Need to be happy and shun the awful stuff. Read psalms and the teachings of Jesus and play with children.
Too bad you didn’t include the next song....”My Hero” from the Chocolate Soldier....the bit at the end with Lucy, Ricky, and Fred on the swing is absolutely HILARIOUS
Vance messes up at the beginning of the song! Watch, she sings "2 little children lying in bed, 2 of them sick, the other 'most dead". Not "2 of them sick," it's "1 of them sick, the other 'most dead". Oh well. Reminds me of when Desi sang Rockabye baby to Lucy when she told him she was expecting. He sang "Rock a bye baby, on the tree top, when the wind blows the cradle will "fall"!!! Should have been "rock"!!!!
One of my top three favorite episodes. Wikipedia says this was in season 4 episode, but couldn't find it when I streamed it on amazon. Does anyone where I could see this episode
I like the skit a lot, but what happeneded to the video? Dark lines going up the screen? And who was in charge of the camera? He couldn't hold that camera still for love or money. Still a good skit. Candy
comedy at it's all time best because it's fred walking behind ethel with plant getting bigger combined with his facial expressions while ethel is singing shortin bread......they caught me with skillet....they caught me with the lead.....watched this episode since a child n 2 this day can not watch it without cracking up...
