How I ride a tall Sportbike as a short rider. Here are some tips to help you if you're a short rider considering riding a tall sportbike. my instagram! / adobo_moto
I had them on my first sportbike over ten years ago, and it wasn’t awful. They never failed, or anything. I ride a 2021 cbr1000rr now, and it’s about an inch taller than the 2006 cbr600rr was, but it’s never obtrusive. I haven’t had any problems riding the liter bike at stock ride height.
@@thagingerninjer5391 I had a lowered bike once myself. Wasn't a big fan of it because where I live is all mountain Twisties. I live right beside the back of the dragon. I just upgraded from a 2020 R6 to a 2023 R1. I haven't did anything to the R1. I learn the machine stock before I start modifying them. I'll set sag and that is about it but I also where a full suit too.
At 48 yo and 5’6” I am all about getting bikes that actually fit my body. That’s not easy as an adventure rider but low seats, lowering kits, and being selective about which bikes you buy can get you a bike that actually fits you and it makes life and riding so much easier and it’s safer. 👍🏾
@@swift23219 it really depends on the rider and how and where you plan to ride. That being said, to me, the best affordable all around ADV bikes for short riders right now are the KTM 890 Adventure with or without a low seat, the Aprilia Tuareg 660 with a low seat, and the new Suzuki V-Strom 800 DE with a low seat. I am considering adding the Suzuki or the Aprilia to what I have now or trading in for one of those. Both are great bang for your buck bikes. The best entry level ADV bikes for newer riders or those exploring adventure riding are the KTM 390 Adventure, the Kawasaki Versys X300, the Honda CB500X, the Kawasaki KLR 650, and the Triumph Tiger 850 Sport. The best somewhat reasonably priced off road oriented ADV bikes are the Yamaha Tenere 700, The Triumph Tiger 900 Rally, the Husavarna Norden 901, and the Ducati Desert X but they work best for taller riders and get pricey. The best affordable dual sports are the good old Suzuki DRZ 400S, the Honda CRF450RL with an ECU upgrade, the Honda CRF 300L, and the Kawasaki KLX 300. The king of the hill for most people is the BMW R1250 GS, which has a low seat version, but they cost a bunch and weigh a ton. It’s the most popular ADV bike in the world by far though.
@@urbanadventurer5 hey man I’m curious if you’ve had any experience on a wr250, I’m the same height and felt alright on a klx300 but I hear the Yamahas are a bit taller
@@beem9335 hey buddy. It’s definitely taller. It’s a little shorter than a full sized dirt bike, but it’s still pretty close to that. For people my height, it’s probably a one foot on the peg and other on a tippy toes type bike. It’s light and a very capable fun machine though. There are also a number of lowering kits etc for it.
As a lifelong minion myself I learned really quick to get just as comfortable putting my right foot down as my left foot at stops. Also got good using front brake only at off camber stops. I lowered my z1000 against a lot of people's advice, and it wound up being perfect. Only problem is I'll scrape hard parts before I drag knee
I’m 5’5”, and I honestly haven’t ran into a lot of problems riding my 2021 cbr1000rr. The seat height is around 32”, and I have a 30” inseam, so I can’t ever flat foot both feet, but I always ride with boots and am comfortable juggling the bike back and forth on each foot. I always make sure I’m in first gear when I pull up to a light, and only put my left foot down, in case I need to accelerate forward to keep from getting rear ended, so it works out naturally that way for me. I do have a reach of over 72”, for some reason, so my arms are a lot longer than most people my size. That tends to help keep me from having such an aggressive riding stance all of the time. I can comfortably sit up on the bike without locking my elbows. I have found that parking spot selection helps me not have to push it around as much, because I’ll likely have to get off it to push it. Lol. The jokes from everyone I ride with are worse than the actual cons of being short in a tall bike. 😂
@@The101damnations yeah, but I’m old now. I always thought the same thing, but young me was too busy destroying his body, rather than building it up. 🤷🏼♂️
Thicker boot soles helps tremendously, used to ride very thin soled boots, after picking up a pair with some thicker ones it completely changed my confidence at traffic lights in the driveway etc. especially those slippery areas with lots of gravel and sand made it alot easier to handle
All of yall thanks for the info, it helps, I live in the damn valley and tons of hills and I’m just starting and loooooord its nerve wracking but I do great in manual cars smhhhh
I'm 5ft 5 in and have been riding for a few years. 1971 to be exact. Got a ZH2 which I feel is not only stupid tall but also top heavy. Heavy has never been an issue. Top heavy is. I had a pair of new balance shoes that were too small for me. I cut the sole off it and bought some logger boots that in themselves give me a 2 in lift. Logger boots are 1 1/2 sizes too big. Dropped the new balance sole into the logger boot adding another inch. Walking feels 95% natural, riding feels 100% normal. Worked like a charm.
I'm 5'2" borderline leprechaun, got a duke 200 v2. I lowered it just because of the hellish traffic here in Manila and of course got tired of thinking of all the shit that you've mentioned 🤣. BTW, love your videos sir!
already used to always bringing the left leg down and right covering the rear brake so no real issue.. except dragging my sack across the seat. never thought about shaving the seat down... good stuff.
Whether or not you lower. Getting comfortable putting one foot down at stops is essential. I'm 5'4" and ride a tall, heavy Concours 14 with no lowering links.
oh my gawd this video was so good. lmao. being 5'7 I needed to see this, especially since im looking at a aprilia. I thought perhaps there were aftermarket seat options to reduce the height but now with seeing how thin the seat actually is there probably isnt much that can be taken away aftermarket. I think once I get back to the dealer and perhaps sit on it i'll see if I have to have the suspension dropped an inch
bro im sorry but I always seen your videos and I finally decided to subscribe. Always be cracking jokes and that shit is just so funny lmao. love to the Philippines!!
Im 5'5 and i have an 2020 r1. Go for it bro, if u use boots or shoes with a little more height (like Nikes and alike) it's pretty doable ahaha. Good luck!
So as a 5’ 3” girl on a R6 you learn to tippy toe and pick a side just like he said. My best advise is also pick your strongest leg. I ride in NYC so I usually always have my left foot down so I can push off quick if I need to ride fast #defensiveriding
Has any of your legs just given out for reason and the bike just falls? And how do you pick up the bike in that situation? Probably one of my biggest fears in riding
@@Chokkobotch it’s happened to me once! But I was able to kick to the other side and wait until it like came back lol. And my bike has fallen! I use my butt and legs to pick it up. Also, I end up falling when people are around lol 😂 so I get help most of the time too 😂😂
why is having the left foot down at a stop better than the right? wouldnt having your foot on the shifter side already be faster to get started than having it on floor and having to move it to the peg?
@@flute136 for me it’s because I usually have to cover both breaks so I always have to have my left foot down. I barely put my bike in N because of the need to speed off faster at times. I dunno makes sense in my brain.
I’m 5’1 and ride a 2006 Suzuki Blvd M50. I’m looking to get a sports bike, but I had no clue where to even start. I do not know any women my height that ride sports bikes. Thank you for the bike suggestions in the video. I’ll check them out.
Ima def try to change my seat, I have a slow ass bike for beginners and it’s small and I still am on my tippy toes on tons of hills ugh so very helpful
FOR MINIONS!!! Used to roll a 01 GSXR 750 had to lower it an inch and since my mechanic is a trackday rider and has been so for years, he lowered the front also so the bikes dynamics wasn't too messed up. It looked awesome being a little lower and became perfect for me. Next project will be a FZ1, being a little lower than the GSXR it should be fine riding as is. Have fun out there :--)
That’s the one thing about the RSV4, they sit higher higher just like the R1. Height wise, I feel way more comfortable on the zx10r, gixxer and the s1000rr
As a person with a shorter wife, I'm always looking at videos to help shorter riders, but on this one, as you shorter folks have to learn these techniques, know that YOU are the blessed ones when it comes to sportbikes, once underway, which is the majority of the time. The ergos are set up for Mark Marquez and other guys the size of horse jockeys. Even Rossi had to have his bikes' ergos made very differently for him, as a guy who'd be tiny standing next to the average guy was still a giant in the MotoGP paddock. Pure sport bike? Smaller folks are at an overall advantage everywhere except the parking lot. I'm not extremely tall at 6', but I might as well be the Jolly Green Giant on a supersport. My elbows bump into my knees.
Can I ask something? Shaving your seat didn't make it stiff or sturdy? What was your personal experience? Didn't it feel a bit difficult while going for a long ride? Can you talk about it? By how many inches did you shave your seat?
@@dr.sunflower6336 hi, the staff just left a thin layer. In my experience riding for 5-6 hours, it is not that uncomfortable. And I am also using chunky heels shoes to add on my height. It helps a lot.
Thank you for this! I got my R1 2 days ago and dropped it yesterday lmao. I'm 6'1, but I just can't handle the weight, so I'll definitely need to get it lower so I can get more leverage from my leg to hold the bike up... lol... 2003 R1
The zx6r is really my dream bike and have thought about lowering it even at least one inch to comfortably one foot it. Current bike is a ninja 400 and im tip toe with both feet down
Are the CBRs taller? I could fairly comfortably control my buddies gsxr 750 with both balls of my feet and only my heels off the ground, I’m only 5’2 or 5’3
Shorter rider here 5,7 and ride a zx10 I do the one leg on and one leg off at the light helps but backing the bike up sucks ass. I found that wearing my air max 90s gives me an inch as opposed to wearing vans. Dope vid ride safe
Can I seriously ask? Do you actually have to use one leg? I’m 5’2 and riding my buddies gsxr 750 I could almost nearly touch the floor with both feet, I feel like at 5’5 you could flat foot both?
Being short sux be right there with you and agree 👍 💯 % Everything you say about the subject is exactly 💯 % what I do had dirt bikes and sat On them one 🦵 🦿 down 1 knee is replaced and I still do it cause I can 💯%⚡️👍👍👍👍
I’m 33 years old 5’6 about 140 pounds and I had a 08 r6. Loved that bike but it was a bit too tall for me. I had no issues riding or controlling it at all but I did have to use one leg at lights and use both my tippies lol got rid of the r6 about 2 yrs ago and just got a 2018 Ducati 959. Was gonna get a 636 but got a good deal on the 959. I fit great on the 636 but the 959 is a little bit tall. Not as much as the r6 but enough to be only able to use have of my foot when I have them both down on the ground. I don’t think I could ever use a lower link but I did consider once upon a time for my r6.
Yeah, I agree on the lowering specially if the bike is mostly being used in the city, being in Asia(Philippines) the combined seat height, weight, short turning radius and that fat ass tank getting on your way when on full lock will make the bike impossible to ride if you got stuck in traffic here so lowering the bike makes it more manageable. Also, don't forget to lower your front when lowering the bike. I'm 5'4" and ride a 09 r6 and a low sus, low seat f750gs
Bit late to this ....street triple has a lrh version, and if you can get down with a naked bike. I have the top spec rs and I can still get entire ball of foot on the ground. P.s. love your videos man!
You should mention your inseam height, since everybody has different proportions. What I am trying to say is that one 5'5 person can have a better ground reach than another 5'5 person, so height is only one part of the equation.
I’ve gotten used to one foot down as someone who is 5’1 and it’s fine in normal situations, but like when it comes to occasional time in group rides where I got to do slow turns/turns and do a quick stop is where I get all messed up and not so confident. my dream is ride an r1 at stock height lol
Ok i'm 4'1 so I'm raging at the presenter for being taller but all of this is SUPER USEFUL AND I WILL BE USING IT Due to it being useful. MAN why did it take me so long to find this channel
Hahahaha this is me!!! Im way more comfortable on my rebel 1100 but i LOVE my cbr 954 so im finally looking into lowering lol. Do you have a lowering link youd reccommend?
Hey bro, I’ve got a 2023 zx6r now that I’m pretty much tip toe or one foot down on the ball of my foot which I’ve learned to live with but my issue has really been finding gear that fits me. I want to go to the track but I can’t find suits that would even close to fit either too long In the arms or the legs I’m about the same height as you at 5’6 any recommendations? Looking for decent street gear too honestly everything I’ve rode with is too big somewhere
Yooooo…We’re the same high!!! I’m planning to get myself into bikes soon, and I was planning to go with the Yamaha R7. What are your thoughts? Since you already own an r6
I do like your presentation... Always love the comments and advice from 6ft + people. What's your problem height makes no difference when riding... Sure Ya big Tree no problem until you need to stop and your foot doesn't go to the ground and you fall with your bike... Then I am just another 5ft guy with a short inseam too.
Same here 5ft.😭 Ride a Yamaha R3, looking to upgrade, went to a bike shop, sat on a few bikes, the only one that I would be comfortable with would be Ninja 650, love the Ducati Panigale 959, but I'm barely touching the ground. I want to try the R7 too.
If you lower it, there is a formula, so research your bike. for example 2004 gsxr 600, if you do 2 inches in the rear, you do 1.5 inches up front. You can also shave the seat 1 inch. Twins are usually narrower than a inline 4, if you are a short rider go to a motorcycle shop and sit on everything in there. Some 600 have higher seats than 1000s. FZ07s are very narrow also.
I’m 5’ 1” and had a Kawi ZX-6R. It was way too high for me when I got it so really didn’t have much choice but to lower it. Went to a local bike shop and had them drop it as far as they could go (we’re talking more than a few inches). It was still a bit high so I shaved the seat. It was finally at a height I was comfortable with. I didn’t track the bike so I was wasn’t worried about zig-zaggin too low. Ended up selling the bike but now looking for something else I can modify 😁
You shaved the seat by how many inches? And shaving the seat means removing the foam of seats right? Didn't the seats make you feel uncomfortable afterwards? Or was it all good ?
5’3” riding a stock heigh r6, and for some reason my right feet reaches the floor better than the left one… I’ve tried on flat surfaces, so it’s not the street… something I will never understand why.
Omg, I am 5'5". Not gonna lie I thought u were shorter, I guess that bikes bigger than I thought. Also, thank you, I do the front break on an uphill, over here in the UK they sort of tell you, you need to hold the rear on an uphill, keep it in gear and roll off as such. I am just accustomed to putting my right foot down since my ass has to slide off the seat almost.
Might want to mention inseam length, not just height, as everyone has different proportions. My wife is shorter than me but is comfier on my bike than I am, despite us both being shorties (I'm same height as you but with a 27" inseam)
I’m 5’3, is there anyway I could ride a sportbike? I just wish they could make the seat height a shorter from the factory. I LOVE them though, can’t wait to buy my first motorcycle!
I'm 5.2" and my bike is 790mm height but light weight and not wide, still I fall alot since it's my first bike start riding starting from scratch about riding, now im ok with it.
biggest issue is not only left or right side. i have a 27 inch inseam on a good day and i cant even reach the damn kickstand LOL ahaha it a struggle for sure
Hello, I am the owner of an Aprilia 660 that I have stored in my warehouse, looking on RU-vid, I found your video of the height of the motorcycle. I am 166 meters tall and I reach the ground very little. This motorcycle is the motorcycle of my dreams and I am afraid of what I am left with tiptoes and I don't know what to do sir, can you give me some tricks to ride a motorcycle. I'm from Argentina and I don't understand English very well, please.
