My dad is 13 in this film. My grandfather didn't buy the best cameras. But my dad did, probably because he realized it didn't make sense to spent a ton of time and money making a film with a crummy camera.
My boulder narration seems wrong. I think the rectangular boulder in 1940 film appears at 5:02 in this video, on the left bank and still resting at the same angle/in the same position. I guess that means they parked at the pull-off a little bit upstream and walked downstream towards the overhangs? It's kind of hard to tell. My dad usually shot with 5.5mm lens, and the lens on this camera seems more like 9, 10, or greater mm. I find interpreting images not shot with wide angle lens to be difficult, because I don't have an innate sense of distances for footage not shot with wide angle (5.5mm for 8mm, 10mm for 16mm, 18-22mm for 35mm).
