I think it’s because Imanaga’s release point of the ball is so low (due to shorter height and more forward extension) that the ball is actually rising. Causing players to swing under or pop up more.
@nofurtherwest3474
@nofurtherwest3474 5 месяцев назад
@@Jowitzer That's interesting. But makes sense. Usually pitchers are taller and they say it's an advantage since they can come down form a higher point, but maybe there is an advantage to being shorter actually, in being able to cause a rising fastball as you say, which would be harder for a very tall pitcher.

It's absolutely fascinating how the latest Japanese pitching exports (especially since Darvish) have demonstrated such exceptional fine tools on the mound - of course not to rule out legends such as the master Tornado or the Daimajin Kazuhiro Sasaki. As a Korean, I've witnessed many encounters with them, and their pitching talent has become almost a national characteristic. Much respect to Imanaga, Yamamoto, and all other outstanding Japanese pitchers from a neighbour.

The art of pitching is disappearing. Guys like Shota are bringing it back. Guys that throw 98+ used to be extremely rare. Now they're a dime a dozen. Artists like Shota have always been rare, but the school of thought they come from used to be the norm. Now it's all about velocity and spin rate.

I keep thinking of the dominant Braves pitching of the 90s. Neither Maddux nor Glavine were fireballers and they were two of the best. I grew up watching John Tudor pitch in St. Louis and he definitely used movement much more than speed.

He wasn't Japan's ace in the WBC. He was their 5th starter. They used up Roki and Yamamoto (their third and fourth starters) against Mexico in the semis, and since Ohtani and Darvish (their Ace and second starter) were on pitch restrictions due to their MLB contracts, Japan went with Imanaga to start. Imanaga's mechanics stand out a lot despite not being a 100mph pitcher. He disguises all his throws with the same mechanics and the ball comes out late so even if it's only 94 max the batter has less time to react as if he is throwing faster. He also changes his throwing rhythm at will to throw the batter off. Sometimes he just throws immediately and sometimes he takes a half second pause then throws. The level of skill without disrupting his control and speed is expected of a veteran. It reminds of the trickiness of Nestor but with better control and mechanics.
@y33sean
@y33sean 4 месяца назад
His arm is also very late behind his torso, which helps a ton with hiding his pitches. From a batter's perspective, once his chest is fully forward his arm is still hidden, and it seems like the ball just explodes out of thin air and it's very hard to react to this. There's a clip of him throwing in a spring training practice from behind the plate that shows this well

Only difference is Steele gets more ground balls and uses his curve more where Shota uses the splitter more and gets pop ups. But their fastballs both have that abnormally high spin rate that allows the ball to play at tbe top of the zone and naturally rise or cut.

I knew he would do good in the MLB. His performance at the WBC was personally my favorite out of all Team Japan.

Only time will tell if Imanaga will prove a great pitcher, despite his tremendous start. MLB is one of the hardest leagues in the world to continually dominate as opposing batters and special team opps will figure Imanaga out, and if he doesn’t properly adjust to that, he will be barely average.

Imanaga was the starting pitcher for the WBC finals. He was probably chosen because he was the most stable pitcher among the Japanese pitchers. Just like Iwakuma was the starting pitcher for the 2009 WBC finals.

たしかに今永はWBC決勝の先発投手でした。 だがしかし、決してエースではなかった。 日本の投手陣の層が厚いということです。
