Here is a comprehensive Shotcut Mask Transition Effects Tutorial that will include the Door Open Mask Transition and the Mask Wipe Transition that you see so often in cinematic videos. In this tutorial, I will show you two ways to create a mask transition, one chroma-keying with green screen and one using a selection tool knock out using Photoshop to assist.
This is an example of a technique that you wouldn't be able to attempt natively in Shotcut. But with a little ingenuity and creativity you can accomplish most effects that Adobe Premiere and DaVinci Resolve can.
Let me know if there's something specific you want to learn about Shotcut Tips in the comments and I'll make a tutorial video.
I hope this tip video inspires you to go play around on Shotcut and make awesome videos!
Here's the whole Shotcut Tutorial Video Series: • Shotcut Tips, Tricks ...

This is great. I like Shotcut because it runs on my slower systems. I'm building a gamer speed system to handle DR but knowing how to use Shotcut is a huge plus. Thanks for all these great instructional videos Ben! I did have a new issue in Shotcut I hadn't yet. It said I had a missing file called "Blank". I guess this proves no software is perfect but some are better than others. Shotcut seems very stable to me most the time.

@@BenEspanto : Yes. The latest version. I worked on it for hours last night and never figured out what caused this issue. I think a code jockey could but that's not one of my skills. I ended up redoing the entire 7 minute video which is rendering right now.

I realize this a year old, but I had two comments on this video: 1) Photoshop (and Gimp) have a "magnetic lasso" tool that uses contrast to detect edges. (It was right under the selection tool you picked, with the U-shaped magnet icon.) It makes selecting regions with strong edges like that door opening much faster, although you may still need to go in and tweak the selection a bit manually to get it perfect. 2) For the wiper transition, since the object being used as a wiper provided a straight edge, you could have used a "Mask: Simple Shape (rectangle)" filter animated with keyframes to follow the edge, rather than editing each individual frame. (Unless that mask didn't exist at the time this video was made...)
@BenEspanto
@BenEspanto Год назад
1. Magnetic lasso is accurate for the most part, but not 100%. Since I've used Photoshop for 20 years, I'm pretty accurate with my manual selections. 2. I wanted to show the technique just in case the edge isn't as perfect and straight as most selections tend to be. If I would've shown it using Mask: Simple Shape, I would've had 10x more questions on the comments on how to select manually. I'm not about to give myself that much work. As you said, this is over a year old and can accomplish the same thing now using Glaxnimate

This is another one of those examples that cannot be done on a standalone Shotcut. You would need an external photo editor like Photoshop or GIMP to create a line.

Luckily, GIMP doesn't open a new tab for every image your dragged. Instead, ıt adds them as layers and you can keep your selection shape, export a frame, move the selection area on the new layer and keep going.
