Kevin, I may have found my video editor - thanks to you! I'm 82 and not keen to learn a lot of new tricks. I need to construct a short video of my model railway layout featuring different train movements through a busy railway junction. I think I'll be able to accomplish that with this app, and since it's for a single project, "free" is good!
If you are 82 then God bless you, if you are 17, then how do you know what mode trains are. Regardless. I’m 29 and it took me 4 hours to get to the point of feeling comfy with the program but it is free and effective. You got it
Great tutorial! I will add it to our tutorials page. At 23:05, all the clips on the video track moved when you dropped to the audio track because you have the "Ripple All Tracks" turned on - se the Timeline menu option or the (*) icon on the toolbar and the video track is not locked. This option is intended to keep things across tracks in sync as you make edits. It is off by default, but this trips up a lot of people. Also, be aware that the 32-bit version has been discontinued as that is too memory limited for today's world of HD and up video.
Thank you. I am creating family videos using Shotcut. You have got the best software. Being completely free helps a lot as I only creating 2-3 videos a year and they are not commercial. Thank you.
This was my FIRST time EVER attempting edits - I have been SO overwhelmed to begin learning - as SO many tutorials are not clear, concise, and novice friendly. I am SO thankful I came across yours and greatly appreciate your time, energy, thoughtfulness, and creativity in your tutorial video! After watching - I successfully edited my FIRST one and at my FIRST go around - This was a HUGE victory for me and am SO excited to learn more!!! THANK YOU, KEVIN!!!
2 years later, I would just like to confirm that this tutorial is super helpful for beginners. Without this I never would have even tried to learn Shotcut
this was the first Shotcut tutorial I watched. After watching quite a few more: it is by far the best in terms of concise information, and presentation style.
Kevin, It is one thing to make a tutorial, but it's a totally different kettle of fish to be able to present everything in a clear, concise, and logical manner that makes it easy to follow. Very well done! Good voice-over too!
Just found Shotcut today. As a developer having to juggle many things at once plus being a noob in video editing, I like the clean and straightforward approach of the application, plus it's open-source. Thanks so much for this great walkthrough tutorial, it's highly informative, to the point and well-structured for covering the basics of getting started! ❤
I found this tutorial to be the best balance between covering all the basics but also quick and to the point. Thanks, it seems a bit overwhelming when you start but I think it's making more sense now.
Excellent Shotcut tutorial for beginners! Great work, Kevin! I'll add one very important tip for future users. If your project is ever lagging a lot when editing there are two options under "settings" that take care of it. One is "preview scaling" which cuts down the lag that happens after adding filters and the other is "proxy" that makes lower resolution copies of your videos that are easier to edit with in case your original video files are also giving you lag. If you use both "preview scaling" and "proxy" at the same time it'll cut down on lag from all possible angles.
@@DaRunningMan It worked great, there was no lag when editing, which was awesome. The only problem right now is adding text (because I'm trying to figure it out), but yeah it's worked great.
This helped me SO MUCH! I had a project for my kid's school that I had to get done. I found out that I needed to do it about three hours before it needed to be done. I came here and you gave me the information that I needed to get it done with an hour to spare. Thank you!
I haven't even watched it yet, but I already plussed this video ... 😇 You read my mind! EDIT. I FINALLY was able to stop long enough to watch the video in its entirety, and in fact I created a little video! I was very pleased at how straight-forward it was to manipulate the clips and use the filters. This is definitely going to become one of my key tools for video editing. It's definitely a step up from using the PHOTOS app that comes with windows.... lol ... THANKS AGAIN, KEVIN!!!!!
Kevin, I've watched hundreds (thousands) of tutorials on countless subjects. There are many outstanding presenters but none can compare with you, your style, clarity, and thoroughness. Kudos and keep them coming...
I've just set up my RU-vid channel after getting months worth of footage. I cam to this app and was o it for hours and got no where. Came on RU-vid to find more about it. Came across your well spoken put together video where you explained very very well for simple people like me lol. Cant thank you enough. You have saved me hours of not getting stressed out and giving up my channel. Subbed
Great tutorial (like all of your tutorials): Questions and observations: -- Can you mark a time on the timeline, or mark a frame on the timeline? In other words, is there a way to tag locations, based either on time or on content, so that you can easily go to those points on your timeline? For example: Can you tag / mark the 2:18 time in the video (so that you do not have to remember that time for something you need to get back to)? Can you tag / mark a specific frame, such that the tag (or mark) will stay glued to that frame as you move that media around during your editing? This would be useful if you want to make changes to that section, but do not want to lose track of it as you are moving things around. -- Can you click (or step), frame by frame, in order to make precise edits? Can you identify a single frame and remove it? -- Can you stack media, such that when two or more items overlap a segment of time, the one in the top-most position will be the one that gets viewed / rendered? -- Can you tag (or grab) multiple items on your timeline and move them together as a group, or adjust their audio or video properties together as a group? -- Can you separate the audio from a media clip? I have seen videos where the video and the audio are out of sync (sometimes the video lags behind audio by, perhaps, ½ a second (or the other way around)). So once you separate the audio from the video, you can drag the audio section slightly to the right (or left, as the case may be), and have the clip's audio and video now be in sync. -- Can you pixelate frames (or regions within frames). For example, to hide a face or a credit card number, etc. -- Can you blur ^^^ditto^^^. -- Can you record your screen with the Shotcut program, resulting in Shotcut producing a new media file that gets added to your media bin (and optionally added to your timeline)? -- Can you add captions? -- Does ShotCut render with the aid of all CPU cores? -- @23:30 The audio is too loud. When the bar graph is filling 90% of the display, it is either too loud or too compressed -- and compression kills dynamics. I plan on divorcing myself from all closed-source products when I buy my next computer. So my current video editor (TechSmith's Camtasia) is not an option, and neither is Windows (I will be running Linux). Camtasia can do all of the things that I asked questions above. I want whatever I replace Camtasia with to be able to perform those same edits. Thanks again for a great tutorial.
Just getting into video editing w my 1st project. Shotcut was on my short list. Rewatched this today after my 1st day of editing. Several shortcut keys will come in handy for tomorrow. I will need to dig deeper into the text features, but this got me started in the right direction when I get to that point. Thanks!
THANK YOU - I am a self-described technical dinosaur starting a RU-vid channel. I chose the free editing software that I could find the best - for an absolute beginner - tutorial for and yours was so thorough that when I couldn't export it from my notebook and redid it on my desktop, I didn't even have to follow along the second time. I just did it. I really, really appreciate this information and will check for more of your videos. SO... now to make one using my own clips.
This is the most helpful video I've found for learning how to use Shotcut. I'm very grateful that sample clips were provided so that we can follow along. I felt so proud and accomplished when I finished editing the video! It's another skill I can add to the resume. Thanks Kevin!
I have watched this Video again. You are a Billionaire in the making. You have added immense value to my life through your channel. Almighty God remember you big time.
Man! You're one of the few highly gifted RU-vid Tutors! This video is so far knocked out all the ShortCut videos I have gone through and a big standing Ovation for you Kevin! Your tutoring skill have kidnapped me into Subscription and massive respect comes to you!
I have been struggling with Resolve 16. For my uses, it's like trying to drink from a firehose. I downloaded Shotcut, and it looks closer to my desired modus operandi. I suppose if I ever wanted to edit something artful and pro, I'd go back and try to get my head around Resolve. Or, step up to the cash register and buy Premier Pro. Thanks so much for providing this super clear tutorial.
Great to hear Jim! Sometimes simple is better. Shotcut should be able to handle most editing needs and still has lots of advanced functionality. Davinci Resolve, Blender, Premiere, etc. are all fantastic apps but get complex pretty fast.
Coming from final cut pro,. I struggled with resolve for a while. But it really is very simply if you just avoid the fusion, color and audio page. I find I get on very well without them... Most of the time. Really resolve only becomes difficult when you need to chroma key or do advanced color grading. Don't give up on resolve. It will be worth it once you turn the corner. I can say that now but I felt exactly like you did for several months.
@@Robert08010 Thanks. Next project, I'll put on my boots and wade in. From any distance, to a newby, Resolve is like being thrown into the lake and told to figure out how to swim. Drowning is the frequent outcome.
@@jimshaw899 I felt that way for a long time as well. But then I came across a big project with several easy edits (lectures I had to prep for youtube). Because they were simple projects, I forced myself to do them in Resolve and that built my confidence. I'm still not as fluent as I was with Final Cut Pro but at least I'm past the anxiety stage. I KNOW I can complete the project in resolve.
Omg I was telling to myself ''ok but didnt explain how to zoom'' and then you start explaining keyframes.. thank you so much, so clear and helpful informations!!
This is honestly amazing !! Thank you so much, as a beginner this has given me so much insight and confidence I cant wait to start creating content. PS: I am so shouting you out in my videos soon cause your content is so dope and easy to understand.
Thank you Kevin. Your pace is just nice. Really appreciate the way you take the effort to zoom in to let us see much better of what you're doing. Well done!
I just want to say thank you so much for this helpful video. I have watched over a dozen videos trying to learn how to use shotcut as I'm NOT tech savy and all of the ones I watched just confused me. Your video is easy to follow and woohoo I was able to edit my video and it turned out! 😁
New to Shotcut tonight. Tried to do it on my own and not successful at much. Searched online and your tutorial is the first one I watched. A huge help to understanding where all the bells and whistles are (under filter), THANK YOU!!!!
You are very good at making these tutorial videos. Clear speech, concise ordering of explanation without many distractions, and thorough in the things I wanted to learn. I still can't figure out how you pulled that hot cookie sheet out of the oven with your bare hands, though! I am setting myself a hard start date for making RU-vid videos for the beginning of next year, and I will make sure to remember you and send people here if they need it. I appreciate it, and you have earned my sub. Thanks again!
I just wanted to say a huge THANK YOU for this incredible video editing tutorial! 🎬✨ I've been struggling to get the hang of editing for a while, but your clear and concise instructions made everything click so quickly. I can't believe how fast I picked up new techniques thanks to you. Keep up the fantastic work! 🙌
Thanks Kevin for a great tutorial. IT have downloaded this onto my work laptop as I need to create short video's for staff to learn how to use our bi-spoke database system. You covered everything I will need to create my videos and you did it in a very easy, clear, concise way that was just brilliant for me, thank you :)
@@pixelpoop5024 right click to an empty area at the bottom thing, click “track options” then “add video tracker” go to your files and find that image, then you have your image on top of a video/image, for a regular image its “open file” and go to the area you put your photo (eg: downloads)
It's 2 AM, I have a video that I need to submit by 8 AM that I have not started editing, to be clear, and I finally finished making this 32nd cookie commercial, THIS TOOK ME ONE HOUR, and I was planning on making a five minute video. This video is something I need to pass my class, so yeah I think I'm going insane. But the video was very helpful.
Excellent tutorial. I followed it exactly and had a great outcome! Was having a bit of stumbles on adding text and lower 1/3rds. I will be wanting to add PNG frames and custom graphics and would like to know more about that.
Kevin, you are the best!!!! I had given up on learning how to edit until i saw you!!!! You are a very thorough, easy-to-follow instructor! No one else compares! Thanks to you, learning to edit it is so easy and enjoyable to follow!!! Speaking of following, i am a new subbie! Thanks so much!!! Looking forward to learning all you have to offer.
Thanks for your help Kevin, Openshot video editor was a complete "audio" bust for me, I couldn't get audio no matter how I tried, However, Shotcut has worked wonderfully on several machines, including my Laptop. This has been great because it's my weakest machine by far, but allows me to edit on the road. I should mention I love that it's also got a portable version. Thanks for the time you spent offering this information. For those wondering it's a windows 7 2.20 GHz laptop and it works great, for real.
Great tutorial! Direct to the point and so simple to learn it step by step. The recommended video editing app is so easy to use plus equip with all the needed features. good job Kevin!
Your teaching skills are second to none. I always wonder how you can talk so fluently without making any mistakes? Could you tell us where you studied and what was your last employment position if you wouldn't mind? 😀😀
You totally rock! I downloaded all your pics and made the commercial with you. Thank you! I'm really looking forward to editing my first video with this software.
I said it: WOW! Thanks a lot for this video, I enjoyed learning about it and this is excellent to put in practice right now at my work. I appreciated that you shared your knowledge with anothers.
Thank you so much Kevin, I've been using premiere pro on my relative's PC. She recently moved away with it, so I had to use my old 2015 low end laptop. It was unable to run Premiere pro or Davinci, so I was stressing. Luckily this video popped up on my search list so I tried ShotCut out. It ran smooth playback and rendered well. You earned a sub my man👍
Yes! When you overlay two clips to create the fade transition, right click on the transition on your timeline and click on properties to expose all the transition effects. There are a ton, like Dissolve, Matrix Waterfall, Iris Circle, etc. You also have a bunch of settings to control the transition, like which direction, how soft, etc.
Excellent!!!!!!! Going to download Shotcut now solely because for a beginner this tutorial makes me realise I can do this! And impressed that the Shotcut crew made the effort to give an 'attaboy' in the comments. This video is a great 'on hand' ready reckoner for what I can't remember. Very much appreciated!
Wow. So perfectly explained. I have deleted adobe AE,because it was unnecessarily complex for making simple edits and decided to move to this program. Looks muuuuch easier to use and learn.
Kevin you are an awesome teacher. However, I’m looking for something simpler. I’ll never be a professional and just want to add some pizzazz to to some of my videos. I’m looking for something that can add text with ease and dress it up. There seems to be to many steps in which I want to do. Is Clipchamp the only option? I’m a novice at best. Is Mac the only option?
25:52 here is where he explains how to add text using shot cut... i'll admit, it seems like it could've been a bit simpler, but I think once you get the hang of it, it will be really easy! hope this helps :)
Shotcut worked great for me and my HP Notebook with Intel HP Graphics 520. Thanks for the videos. I will refer to this many times while making a keynote book.
😊 Hi! You just saved my day, busy exporting now and will upload my project within an hour or so. Thank you for a great video. Wishing you greater success.
Hi Kevin. At your suggestion (from you RU-vid review of 5 free Video Editors) I started with OpenShot as I have fairly simple needs (spiking up old family VHS tapes - no Cookie Company Commercial). I cut my teeth on OpenShot and was prepared to stick with it.... but it crashed all of the time (Windows 10 and all the right RAM and Processor). This is commonly talked about in the OpenShot community. It has been a year since they have release another version. Reluctantly I went back to your review video and decided to go up the line. I am going to give Shotcut a try next, but OMG, after working in OpenShot I an thrilled to see how much easier this is going to be to just working with the basics. I saw everything I need in you excellent tutorial. If this app does not crash (ala 1990 software days where you had to SAVE all of the time), then I am home. Thanks for your work. I watch you in other productions too.
Just the perfect balance between general overview and detail. When I came to exporting, I was amazed at all the options proposed by the current version 23, including AV1. There is a filter for LUTs, there is so much more, and all this for free, in the true spirit of Linux. Unless video editing is your bread earner, you do not need much more, but maybe even if you are a pro. In the true spirit of Linux, I also suggest you make a donation to keep the project going. The developers could easily be selling this stuff for hundreds of dollars or euros.
Thank you so much for the information and for truly walking step by step. When watching other RU-vidrs explain it's normally very rushed and not as detailed. I took notes and drew the symbols so I can look back and follow if I get confused and not waste time editing. I really appreciate this video.
Thank you Kevin, wonderful Tutorial. :) I had a few issues honestly and it took me WAY longer to do what I was trying than I'd like to admit, but I'm pretty confident now! Thank! :D
