I achieved my black belt in Shotokan quite a few years ago. It brought me back to all the many years of practice to achieve the proper form. It has been a while since I practiced and I could not even come close to doing these forms now. But, it was very good learning. I passed it on first to my children then my grandchildren. My son achieved his black belt. My granddaughter did not go into Shotokan, but, she has had a very successful MMA training. She is currently a black belt and competes in MMA tournaments. The discipline and efforts help you achieve in all areas of life and are great to help you focus and pursue despite difficult situations you may encounter. I highly recommend that children be involved in some form of Martial Arts and guarantee it will be one of the best things to help them to a very productive life, not to mention the benefits of the physical conditioning.
Sir, I couldn't agree with you further. My father placed me in Shotokan Karate when i was 14 yrs. of age and i instantly fell in love with every aspect of Shotokan, I couldn't stop thinking about Karate at the tender age of 14. When i wasn't in school i was at the Dojo and my dad had to force me to do family stuff like camping, outings etc. I grew up in a very tough neighborhood and dangerous for a young kid as there were way too many dangers for children so Karate was my life saver...Literally and i am grateful each day for my Sensei who took me under his wing and tried to teach me everything he knew. I will always be thankful to Sensei Matti Melisi because if it wasn't for him my life would have came out a lot darker. Thank you Sensei for saving my life.
My Dojo is closed cause of COVID-19. Even though I practice American Kenpo now, this brought me back to where I started. I've always admired the crispness of Shotokan Karate-ka. Such Bodily Control! Thanks for providing me a workout.
I came here from cobra Kai. Since watching it on Netflix multiple times, it Truely changed my life lol. I know it sound sad because it’s just a series but it gave me so much motivation

My Moo Sul Kwan Taekwondo, has Shotokan history in it’s lineage of instructors and I see your technique is exactly the same with big movement and stacking for good power
I am not a karate expert, just one who is an enthusiast and practice it for physical fitness of what he thinks is karate although it could be not. I learn a little Shotokan 40 years ago; and the way we were thought was like it is shown in this video. But I think those manner of blocking is applicable in a demo where the attacker and defender are stationary. Look at those karate kumite seldom if you can not even see one doing an upper block as taught in the dojo. either one will extend his hand to parry swiping it out. I could be wrong.
Old school Karate practitioners harden their bodies through brutal training. The various kata makes since, when the old school physical training is included.
I want to do shotokan I've done judo and taekwondo and my knees aren't the same but shotokan uses alot of hand techniques and it looks like it will work as a self defense
I went to a few different karate club's years ago wish now I didn't stop going between working long hours and bringing up a family now I am retired I have regrets
This is for people who want to think they can defend yourself. Get that. hand a quarter inch up higher from your hip to be deadly. And in his brain he thinks i still need my teacher
So much oss and osu, Sensei in the comments. You don't say that to an instructor or senior rank. It is is very disrespectful and being almost a sense of bravado.
