Yesterday, two teenagers were found guilty of murdering trans schoolgirl Brianna Ghey, in an attack back in February this year. Investigators involved in the case regarded the case as one of the most disturbing of their careers, mainly due to the horrific murder plan that was found during the investigation. Throughout the trial, the defendants have been referred to girl X and boy Y due to their under 16 status at the time of the crime (as the law permits), but many are calling for them to be named in the press. Katie is adamant that we should never hear any details of a case, and that naming criminals makes them infamous.

@@buckbumble Do you live in the UK? If so you know how short their sentence will be, they will still be young when they're released. I think the point is so people know who did this so they stand some sort of chance of knowing if they ever encounter them and can avoid them or whatever. I get it to be honest, if I lived in that area I'd want to know

I think they make a good point about how when somebody is murdered, there is way too much attention on the killer instead of the victim. Don't name them. Don't give them the glory. Just keep speaking about Brianna and the life she lived.

Their schoolmates will know who they are and it’s only a matter of time before the press root out someone willing to talk about this so yes name them, they committed the crime they deserve absolutely nothing,their families must be really proud of them,if it was one of my children that had done this I would never speak to them again,they are pure evil to plan and carry out something like this.

This might sound unbelievable but i swear on my heart that this is true but I was in both of their years and knew both of them. I sat next to the Boy in Science for my last year at school. He was really quiet but when he spoke it was about dark subjects. As for the girl, i knew her too. She went to the same school as me and the boy but moved in Year 10 to Brianna's school. I also used to take the bus home with him as he lived in the same area as me. It was harrowing to know that someone who seemed mostly so quiet in school to do something so horrendous. Most of my classmates who knew them including me would be happy to share their names.

It's sickening to think that people my age can think of something that horrendous to do, and then try to cover it up. Its harrowing for everyone involved for sure.

I just don't want them to get notoriety. They looked at serial killers and probably will like there name being out there. But i don't have all the knowledge the judge will have when making this decision. Also will it matter if they get a new identity if released? They haven't been named because they're children, but the judge does have the power and authority to name them and that right has been exercised in the past with the killers of James Bulger. 1 of them has continued to get into trouble and is currently in prison. The other one seems to have kept himself out of trouble since being released.

of course not, what is naming them going to do? All it will do is make 'vigilante justice' more likely. Naming John Venables and Robert Thompson hasn't been in any way successful because they've had to have new identities (at a cost I am sure) and their families have essentially had to go into hiding to remain out the public eye. It will also give the two people notoriety which you could argue is what they wanted. We want to prevent similar minded people wanting to do these crimes for the lure of being some kind of pseudo-celebrity.

As a trans woman myself i really think they should not be named. Right now there is no evidence that this is a transphobic killing as there was other targets, but to name the killers could lead to transphobic media and pundits applauding these people for who it was they attacked, especially now when we have american right wing transphobes calling for the eradication of trans people, and those Terfs in the Uk calling for the same thing. There is alot of hatred going around and we dont want to create poster childs for the violence against trans women

In any case they are named now and the judge labelled it a transphobic hate crime for the male killer, so hopefully the shock of this attack will have a impact on the hate and lessen the transphobia
