Should College Athletes Make Money From Name, Image And Likeness Deals?

The NCAA enacted an interim name, image and likeness policy almost a year ago, which allows athletes - many of whom have big social media followings - to make deals with local car dealerships, and in some instances, with major retail and media brands.
Several states have written their own individual laws to regulate compensation in name, image and likeness, commonly known as NIL. Some states, though, have stayed on the proverbial sidelines. Meanwhile, the NCAA has asked Congress for federal legislation that lays out a framework that encompasses compensation for all college athletics.
Watch the video above to find out more about how college athletes have been using NIL deals to earn tens of thousands of dollars, the growing pushback against these policies, and what’s next for college athletes now that they can turn their fame into dollar signs.

College athletes were making money way before this but under the table. James Wiseman from Memphis received money under the table and was later caught and had to pay back towards a charity. Zion Williamson was also given money under the table but was never caught. The system is corrupted. College athletes should be compensated plain and system

Did you see money being exchanged between Zion? How do you know. You said he didn’t get caught, so did you give him money or witness someone else giving him money. Lastly how much was he receiving?

do americans realise that their type of college sports is unique in the world... in every other place, education is the primary function of school

Yeah we do pretty much everything bigger and better (depending on ur viewpoints) than many other places in the world. Many of the large state universities here have Football programs that generate FAR more money per yr than a whole bunch of European pro soccer/football clubs, for example. College/University football has a huge subculture here and is a beloved pastime and long running, very successful business ... so yeah $€£¥ ... pew pew pew for anyone who has issues w it lol

because in most countries colleges are subsidized and geared towards making education optimal, however in the US it's all about money not education. colleges in the US would sell cocaine if they could get away with it lol

Yes and all those top professors are leaving broke universities to cash in on the schools football program 🏦🏦🏦

How is this even a debate? Athletics at that level is a form of labor-- these people should at the very least be making minimum wage for their effort!

I have NO PROBLEM paying college athletes in the same way they pay college students who have campus jobs and/or how they pay college graduate research assistants and teaching assistants. But if they get paid, then they should also be fired for not performing well. If a college research assistant or teaching assistant performs poorly in their academics, or if they perform poorly in their jobs as teaching assistants or research assistants, they will be fired. So the same standards should be applied to college athletes. Your grades drop below a B average? Fired. You throw too many interceptions as a quarterback? Fired. You miss too many shots as a basketball player? Fired. Your strikeout too many times as a baseball player? Fired. You're good with that?

It’s gonna be interesting to see if in the long run this has any affects on team balance. Being from Alabama I could totally see people being willing to pay for a fund to guarantee Bama and Auburn gain the best players.

I wonder why they didn’t talk about gymnasts here. Many great gymnasts don’t compete on NCAA because of those restrictions. Gymnasts at college age are almost at the end of their athletic career they should have been allowed to profit from the hard work of a lifetime.

So, gambling on college games is legal and now paying college athletes is legal. And, noone sees a problem with that??? It is now significantly easier to corrupt the games, without penalty. Ever see Blue Chips? Happy could've paid Tony for his NIL to shave points. How about paying a scrub $100k for autographs to spike the star's food or drink to affect his performance in a bowl or NCAA tournament game so that the payor wins at 30-1 odds on the underdog. The Happys of college athletics are happier than a muhhhh now.

I don’t agree with it but at the same time I don’t deny there is some sense in compensating college athletes. Let’s stop calling them amateur athletes though if they no longer are

This rule would really avoid student athletes to get caught up with loan sharks and most especially gangs. In addition, they can still stay in school & finish their education, work up on their game better and be mature. Instead of hastening and hustling their way to the pros at an early age.

Nice for NIL but they may have to pay taxes on funds $$$$$$$ . Also there should be some protection for them from sharks. A place to save the Funds till needed or after school. Bank the funds get interest too. Have to be rules and outlines for students to learn. ;-D

The only thing that ever should has been banned is being paid a salary or a bonus directly from the university for playing the sport… but athletes should always been able to get NIL money from any and all other sources. Period. Blocking that, punitively, was a sick joke

How? They get scholarships, room, and board, and all other school related expenses covered. These are adults that entered into an agreement to trade their time as athletes for an education. I don’t think any slaves ever had those options.

As you can see we are already in the month of May and I feel those who would allow the market dynamism to determine when to trade or not are either new in space in general or probably just naïve, the sphere have seen far worse times than this, enlightened traders continue to make good use of the dip and pump even acquiring more equities towards trading sessions, I'd say that more emphasis should be put into trading since it is way profitable than holding. Trading went smooth for me as I was able to raise over 11.2 BTC when I started at 3.5 BTC in just few weeks implementing trades with signals and insights from MR MIKE HART, would advise y'all to trade your asset rather than hold for a future you aren't sure about.....bufferinglearning
