Ryan McGlaun - does rifling make a difference in paintball barrels?
Ashraven PB - Do you think FSR should be banned in all rec play/walk on games and only be allowed in scenario and private groups?
First Strike Rounds ➡ amzn.to/3e3V3As
Mitchell Birch - With the release of the EMek. Do you think if guns like EMek were sold at stores like Dicks, it would help grow the sport by starting off players off with something nicer than a Tippmann or Spyder?

I feel like paintball as a whole is suffering. Local shops are in decline, most fields have field paint only rules, thus starving local and online sales. As for FSR, it has advantages in accuracy, but terminal ballistics are no more dangerous than round ball. They chrono at the same speed and break on impact. My only issue with them is the severe lack of biodegradability. Magfed is the sport slowing down to smell the roses. Much like the resurgence in pump play. Embrace it!

my issue with fsr is that they are $80/250. That just doesn't fit my play style, and besides a good barrel even without inserts and good paint would give you the same results...

I’m so tired of the ignorance in the paintball community and I’m really passionate about this. I’m going to explain to you why the paintball world is imploding. As noted in the comment by Alabaster Slim, Rentals are the bloodline of paintball. And the reason why? “Because that’s how it’s always been” For real. You mean to tell me your business practice of segregating players doesn’t already fracture your chances of more success? Nevermind the fact that rentals is usually referring to a group of people. And since rentals have to play with rentals you need a crowd to have any fun. Once the crowd has had their fun and leaves, catch the owner rubbing his hand on the influx of cash like a fly on shit. .... cause that’s it. Little Richie’s birthday is only once a year, so you better hope Richie’s friends have the same idea for their birthday. You gotta understand the average person hasn’t been invited to the paintball world as early as we were. Ask any self equipped: What drew you into paintball? The cool colors, the tactical gameplay (well, speedball is another story), decking out your gear? The fear of getting shot, the thrill of shooting to kill... its real life call of duty what is there not to like? The thing is, what do rentals consist of? A flimsy, soggy, J-flex mask and a crusty Tippmann 98 with so much paint stripped it needs to put on a bathrobe. The paint? priced to gouge the wallet. priced to say “this is my entire profit margin” Priced so dumbfoundedly high it needs to pull over and take a cold shower because it got me making up words like dumbfoundedly. And don’t even lie it made sense when you read it. FFS, I’ve heard players limiting their shooting so as to NOT burn through a case.... So we have right here two of the many major problems paintball is facing. 1. Segregation of players 2. Egregious ammo prices ... Stay tuned as I am making a channel dedicated to Paintball! You’ll know who I am when I quote this post.

FSR: Never ever with rentals. So generally walk-ons: no FSR, I've been at one walk-on game that allowed them, but there weren't any first timers and all the players were down with it. Think more of a private game than a walk-on. Renters are the bread and butter of this industry - they are the ones the bring the money, not us gun owners. You want them coming back again and again.

FSR users are never the problem in my experience. I'd bet 10/10 new players would rather take a single (or even two) FSR than half a dozen round balls from one of the numerous speedballers (or trigger happy scenario players) tearing through the walk on games. Nothing is scarier as a new player than having $100 worth of paint shot at you as the guy runs up and clears out your bunker. Respectfully, it's narrow minded to suggest that FSR would deter new players when they're already playing in such an environment.
@pancakebuffalo.gaming

I have no issue with FSR around renters, however on average speedballers are the ones killing the experience from what I've seen. Nothing against any of em, just noticed in my experience that the overshooting and crazy high rate of fire is the biggest demoralizer for newbies.

The speedball players I see going up against rentals are usually people who don't actually PLAY speedball, they just have speedball gear and like shooting rentals rather than having fun. Anyone I know or have met who actually plays speedball and has gone to a rental field usually dies down their playstyle to match rental players so everyone has a good time. Stuff like only using single shots, running around, etc. Honestly though it isn't even speedball players that always has me worried when playing with rentals or people I bring, it's the guys with the scenario guns who decide "hey you know what? There are a ton of rental players, I'm going full auto." Many people I know personally were turned off from paintball after being in games with these kinds of people (who are usually also the ones who shoot you dozens of times when you are already out).

FSR doesn't necessarily hurt more than roundball. They're both chronoed at the field legal velocities. The only difference is FSR maintains that velocity longer since it's actually aerodynamic so it just feels like getting shot up close with roundball, which if you're playing close quarters, it still really isn't any different.
@thumpertx1
@thumpertx1 6 лет назад
Yung Golfcart FSR hurts far more than round ball at cqc ranges. Mainly due to the plastic on the back of the ball. I usually don't bruise too bad with round. The bruises typically go away within a week unless it was an extreme overshooting or hot shot. Now with FSR at close range, it's completely different. The pain, while not horrid, is much higher. Anytime I take an FSR at close range, my skin is imprinted by the fins. The bruises lasts for 3 or 4 times as long and is a lot more sensitive. Is this a reason to ban them? Not even in the slightest. They are not dangerous unless shot over the legal limits, but so are round balls. So really not much of a difference between the two. Plus, with fSR you won't get hit with much more than a couple at s time due to how damn expensive they are.
@Bert439

FSR holds it velocity more consistent than any roundball.
@yunggolfcart6751
@yunggolfcart6751 6 лет назад
Garrett Luttman I suppose it depends on what you're wearing too and if you're expecting it or not (adrenaline factor). I've had both roundball and fsr hurt pretty much equally at cqc. You're point is valid though

so i am playing magfed with 20 round mags...i need maximum accuracy to be effective so i use FS rounds. then there are speedballers with their big ass hoppers and high rof super light markers, raining thousands of balls down on you. now tell me who seems more unfair to a rental. why should FS be banned ?! thats super stupid !? magfeds already are only a small minority?! why shit on that minority even more...and why not go after the fucking speedballers. the whole argument that "it drives away rentals!" is super bullshit, "oh this guy aimed at me and hit me with 1 of his 20 rounds in his mag! fuck paintball!" said noone ever. especially bullshit because of the fact that magfed markers are at a disadvantage already...why would you blame THEM for it...not those super OP speedball setups. i play on big games usually when there are rentals/magfeds/speedball markers on the field and nothing is more frustrating than someones locking down a whole part of the map with a speedball-style setup...

I think fields should start utilizing a “first strikes only” gameplay since the field I go to separates the rentals from the gun owners on the speedball field. Not sure if this is already a thing or how you would go about it but I feel like separating the players in certain games would improve the beginners experience. Edit: Yeah apparently other fields are doing that, so everyone can be happy. They can have like mixed games on the big fields but also have advanced games on like the speedball field and also have rental only player games too there as well. Idk I really think it’s effective.

@cbb6278
@cbb6278 6 лет назад
I don't know about that at all. I have never really bruised from being hit with a paintball. At most a very light hard to see bruising at best. I was shot with a first strike 3 weeks ago in the leg from about 40 yards away. I still have a nasty looking bruise and it is tender as hell to touch it. I have been playing since '97 and I have never had a shot hurt as bad as that one. It didn't stop me from playing. I met up with the dude after he shot me and we went and rechrono'ed his First Strike Compact pistol and it read 275, 277, 276, 278 and the field limit was 280. So you can't say they don't hurt any worse because while the other first strike rounds that I have been hit with never really bothered me 2 of them have made me think whether or not they should be legal when you get within so many yards or feet.

@gdeisig
@gdeisig 6 лет назад
I always use to argue with my buddies over this one... I had a cmi thunderpig truflight barrel. (Which was straight rifled) These barrels are great, the balls tend to come out with zero spin in any direction, so they were always consistently accurate. But my friends thought it was stupid and swore by twist rifled barrels. I always thought this was dumb. It's basic physics, if you spin a ball, it curves. So why would you want that? But some believe that a slight controlled spin was better than no spin at all. Apparently during the civil war, some muzzle loaders used a slight rifling with round balls to great success. I don't know if this is historically accurate or not. I would figure they would be using mini balls in the rifles, not round balls. In my testing with a smooth bore, straight rifled and twist rifled barrels, I always put the straight rifled barrel on top and the twist rifled barrel dead last. You want to put spin on a ball? Buy an apex tip. Those things are just freaking cool and simple, and you can control the direction of the spin. (To some extent)
@t0n3mapls43
@t0n3mapls43 6 лет назад
Grant Deisig the only spin I could imagine that would be beneficial would be the backspin that flatlines give
@gdeisig
@gdeisig 6 лет назад
T0n3ma PLS, yes I agree. For distance backspin is a must. The only bad thing is that if your balls aren't PERFECTLY round. The balls never get perfect backspin and veer off to one side or the other. I have the apex tip and my friend has the flat line on his A5. And the apex seems to be more accurate. Probably just because of the two totally different methods used to put backspin on the ball.

@Tommy-gk6bh 6 лет назад
Chris West that would be cool but the answers would be really straightforward.
@allahallah123
@allahallah123 6 лет назад
Ah the age old question, poppit or spool. The answer used to be a tradeoff of efficiency (poppit) or smoothness (spool). However with all the new drivetrain tech for spool valve guns the efficiency is comparable to most poppit valve guns. When PE released the LV1 they redesigned a critical part of the poppit engine, and allowed for one of the smoothest shot feels in the game. The Field One (formerly Bob Long) G6R can get pretty much unmatched efficiency with a shot that still feels smooth yet snappy. Really now it comes down to whatever ergonomics and shot feel you like best.
@ashravenpb
@ashravenpb 6 лет назад
modern poppets and spools perform very similarly. Poppets used to be much more efficient and reliable while spools where quieter and smoother. Now there is very little difference, although spools still typically shoot a little smoother and slightly quieter.

First strikes unless you're running a VERY specific mag fed set up , really does not present that much of an "advantage". With such a set up it does, but you're limited on ammo being mag fed I do agree with the idea of keep it away from rental groups, But I have never had a problem facing down mag fed F.S. wielding players with my mech markers even in large scenario play. Sure they get nice range and look very "flash" but just long balling or reliance on equipment =/= skill . In scenario games good use of cover, fast movement to said cover, good teamwork , communication and being sneaky pays off dividends Vs. those whom think their gear makes them better.

F.S. isn't that bad, the very idea of banning it for certain fields or against new/rental players is really stupid....at this rate, we should start banning Speedball players from playing against new/rental players, because they can be a hundred times worse then F.S.(no offence towards any style of PB players). I'm sorry, but a few special snowflakes to the hundreds of thousands that play this great sport shouldn't have a bigger voice then use who play all the time.

But this isn't any different from a regular paintball hitting you...it all depends on how much pain you take and where it hits

I think the problem with first strike is: people get into magfed, and think "I'm going to run first strike!" And just go to their next big game running one marker with FS. Then they go into areas (like at the field near me PRZ) where there's a lot of cqb, or they rush other players. Few people are willing to spend the money on a sidearm. I feel like if I was running an event, I would require people running FS, to also run roundball in a sidearm. As well I would tape their FS marker to identify it.

The Rifled barrel give the ball a Clockwise spin, the inertia of the spin will cause the ball to spin left or right or up or down, you want a back spin to curve the ball upwards, its like a baseball pitcher throwing a curveball. always barrel match your paint to your barrel, before each day. some brands of paint may be slightly larger or smaller. Buying a barrel kit with multiple size backs .685 .683 ECT. or inserts that do the same will have a greater affect on grouping and distance accuracy over all then pretty much any other method or barrel system i have encountered in the last 20 years of paintballing. New comer here. I’ve played paintball a few times, but decided ultimately that I wouldn’t play anymore, unless I purchased gear. Why? Because when you’re renting a gun, and playing with gear owners, it’s absolutely a waste of money. I wanted to throw the gun and fistfight instead. Extremely frustrating when you’re working with a tool that hardly works, and then someone hits you from 200 yards out. Unfair, and should be considered a scam.

I see a lot of people taking about shitty rental gear. I’m in Australia where the paintball market has just shot up because 12 year olds are now able to play and it’s easier to get a paintball marker. And at my local field, they are a paintball shop so they know what their doing. Also they have very nice non fog masks, nice gog enemy’s(well taken care of) and have multiple gun upgrades from the meek to the geo. The field is top quality and they actually provide some good equipment. And yes the rentals are out gunned by the pros who sometimes come and overshoot but it’s not very bad because the teams are made fair.

I wouldn't prohibit FSR's or anything like that. I'm not penalizing someone just because they made an investment in their gear. You could go the same route and start banning full auto guns or anything like that because it's "unfair" to the rental players. If you ban one thing just ban anything non-rental. Or simply segregate the players OR make the rental players aware if they want to play with non-rental players.

First strikes will not deter new players nearly as much as sweaty speedballers sprinting around the field in cleats and ramping $100 worth of paint into every bunker. Getting caught in a rope of 15+bps is what scares new players, not getting picked off by a long ball from across the field. Unless a field has a mandatory 30 foot mercy rule and a 10bps cap across the board, first strike will not cause more pain than what already happens. First strike users generally don't bonus ball, either ($$$). It's far less scary to get shot with a first strike than it is to get run up on and shot in half by an electro. I don't know if fields ban first strikes because they're not as lucrative to sell as normal paintballs, because the fields are ignorant and lack the reason necessary to accept ideas other than their own, or both. After years of discussion, I still have yet to hear a valid argument for banning their use.

I worked at a woodsball field from 99-04 and we included gun cleaning in the safety talk. When working as a ref I always had a squeegee on me. I'd squeegee rental guns during the game and ask the renters between games if they noticed their shots curving or any balls breaking in the barrel. As a player I have NEVER seen another commercial field tell renters how to clean their barrels. Most fields will squeegee a rental gun if the renter brings it up to the counter, but they never seem to be proactive about broken paint. I played at a field in Ireland on an exchange trip in college and the field refused to clean my gun until I started taking it apart, then they gave me a clean one. I've field-stripped and cleaned hundreds of guns for renters and new players (FYI fields don't like it when you strip their guns, but they'll either get the player a new gun or let you keep cleaning. No one has ever tried top kick me out) and then had them re-chrono. Most inaccuracy is from fresh broken paint like in the well maintained rental GOG eNEMy I cleaned for a kid 2 weeks ago, but some fields, especially those with clam-shell guns like M98s, simply never service their equipment and they're full of old paint and dirt. I've never understood why this isn't a top priority for fields especially since most field owners and players are paintball players who throw a fit if their personal setup isn't shooting straight.

Well, no. Rifled barrels make a HUGE difference with round balls. On any tippmann, it brings the shot spread from about 2 FTsq. To about 2"sq. Aswell as increases the dead accurate range by about 40m. FSR does get more of a benefit from rifled barrels but any round ball marker will still greatly benefit from rifling.

Mostly for storage. Most markers come with cases that wont fit a full 14" barrel, so an 8" back and 6" tip will do. Personally i think one piece is better, there are no extra threads, no gap where the back and front meet that can cause an issue (believe me, some barrels just arent made well, look at the Empire Driver XX barrels, i had a set and all 3 of the backs had a sharp burr where the chamfer in the breech ended). If you have an autococker or pump, you know why one piece barrels are easier to remove than two piece barrels (unless its a reverse threaded tip like PE uses)

Check out taofledermaus's video on slugs with rifling on them , I dotn know if it would work for a paintball either . If you fired a normal slug through a rifled barrel it would spin more then a rifled slug through a smooth bore . Because those fins are too small to have any effect , maybe stabilize them just a little it litteraly does 1 rotation before it hits the target where is rifled barrel it would spin way more and be more stabilized I dont know if that applies for paintball too maybe because it is lighter it might have an effect on it ?

Hustle paintball has a video shooting FSR through a lapco rifled FSR barrel vs FSR through a smooth bore. The FSR + rifled barrel were incredibly consistent (although the marker wasn't, which is why the shots would be high then low then on target) while the FSR + smooth bore still drifted to the left and right quiet a bit

Speedball players are preventing the growth of paintball. Overshooting new players, overshooting people who cant afford high end guns. I cap my gun at 5bps when playing new players so its more even and fun. Kids whose parents spoil them overshoot kids that are learning the game way to often. I also have seen adults do it to, they are why speedball paintball isnt growing as much. I love speedball. But when the economy collapsed every paintball store in my area closed down and alot of people me included quit playing as much. Other sports continudd to grow while paintball legit basically died for a few years. Again its the spoiled brats overshooting new people thats killing growth.

backspin barrels like the apex and flatline are really rough on paint, which means you have to use thicker shell paint that isnt as brittle. You get extra range, but since the paint isnt as brittle as tournament grade paint, it'll just bounce off the person and not break.

Ashraven PB actually in a sense yes through the late 80s into the 90s they were called paintball markers for a reason.one to avoid the stigma that that paintball was wargames and promotes war violence.that and manny parents didn't want their children playing with a paintball gun wich is why they called paintball marker.in the early 90s. Now as for airsoft yes they were called airsoft guns for two reasons one they fired a plastic b.b and two they do fire zinc b.bs wich could puncture skin badly. So being a smart ass calling them nerf or something is just plain ridiculous. In such yes both had to separate names for the sport paintball was only called that in late 88 into 89 the name changed dramatically over night from the survival games to paintball and to get more people into the sport they call them paintball marker...paintball was very expensive in the beginning. It was a dollar a tube and 10 paintballs was what you got in a tube and co2 was fifty cents a 12gram constant air didn't come till spring of 89 and it was primitive types of air quick changers were the fastest way to change co2 .. I hope this history lesson helped im not arguing with you im just merely telling you how the sport has changed and evolved...

If you look at history, the musket BALL was the first projectile designed to be fired from a weapon. The rifled barrel came into existence in order to stabilize musket BALL and make it more accurate. The rifled barrel does help make the round ball more accurate by providing enough rotation to counter the deformities (which cause drag) in the paintball. The mechanics are similar to those of putting a spiral on a football in order to counter the drag of the laces. #pbqt I know there wasn't a straight question in this, I just wanted you to see this comment and possibly respond?
@PaintballRuinedMyLife
@PaintballRuinedMyLife 6 лет назад
All the literature I read in preparation for this video lead me to believe that riffling has very little effect spherical projectiles. So a quarterback throws a spiral to "counter the drag of the laces"?

@johnathanmoore9688 6 лет назад
Paintball Ruined My Life I've been in the sport for over 30 years, and I've used a rifled barrel in some of my gear for over a decade. If the ball size is large enough, the rifling does have a noticeable effect. By rotating the imperfections (laces), it causes the air flow the fluctuate around the object. Think of the laces along the same lines as the rudder of a boat, and the effect of water/air flow. When you alternate the location of the laces/rudder, you change the flow of the drag. Does that make sense?

First strike does NOT hurt more. I have been hurt far worse with a regular recball paintball than a first strike. I play almost exclusively magfed paintball now, so I have been hit hundreds of times FSR's, and thousands by paintballs. I have done back to back tests with recball vs speedball grade paint, and the difference in pain is around HALF because the speedball paint is substantially more brittle compared to the recball/woodsball grade paint. A of people haven't even considered this very basic concept that it is the shell that is the biggest difference, and a lot of the time why bounces hurt more (because it didn't break so it remained hard when it bounced off you). Also.. I have often found myself going "damn that First Strike hurt..." then I realized it was a roundball. Bottom line... we jump to conclusions just because that is natural. I am a firm believer that in general newbie/birthday style play... only roundball should be used (unless their is an limited number of bolt action 'sniper' upgrades for that group), just to keep the playing field level. You want people to have a FUN first time, and come back more, not frustrate them because they 'felt' at a disadvantage. Treat your customers with respect, don't gouge, and put yourself in their shoes to try and create the best customer experience. Don't treat people like 'punters' (people you can financially exploit in the short term).

As someone who uses FSR 100% of the time at every game I play. I agree...FSR doesn't need to used in open play walk on days IF there is a lot of younger rentals, but if you ban them outright, you are discouraging a paying customer from those days they just want to play. If those walk on days are more speedballer and higher end markers, the FSR should be in play, it is our way to level the playing field against hoppers. Prsonally, at walk on days I'll load up both and if I get into a shootout with a rental, I'll switch to a roundball mag with the loss of velocity to give said rental a bit of advantage to make them feel good, especially if they are a child.

Ashraven PB how much range do you typically get from a high end paintball gun? I assume since paintballs are much larger than BBs and have no backspin it’s significantly less
@ashravenpb
@ashravenpb 6 лет назад
All paintball markers shoot at the same velocity (usually about 280 fps) for safety reasons so they will all have the same range. However, there are three major exceptions: The apex tip, the flatline barrel, and the First Strike round. The Apex and Flatline both put backspin on the paintball, which allows it to travel further. Unfortunately, they are also really rough on paint so you have to use paintballs with a harder shell. In paintball, if you get hit and the paintball doesnt break then you are still in. Backspin barrel make the paintballs travel further, but they usually arent traveling fast enough to break on your opponent. They increase the range, but not the effective range of the marker. First Strike rounds are paintballs that have rifled fins on the back half. They travel much further and much more accurately than standard paintballs, but can only be used in certain magazine fed markers. They're also incredibly expensive.
