We were asked:
“Should horse hair sporrans become part of civilian wear again? They tend to be military and pipe band wear only it seems.”
Sporrans featuring horse hair and/or goat hair first developed in the 18th century and have always been linked strongly to military fashion. In fact at one time one could tell an officer from an enlisted man from the opulence of their uniform sporran.
In the Regency period, these designs morphed into versions for civilians to wear and in fact became very common for both day and evening. IN the 20th century they fell out of favor. It seems that from the period of World War I onwards they were considered fusty and old fashioned - too complex, too ornate. However, they never completely went away and you can still get a high-end sporran with horse or goat hair today. They are not cheap!
All that said, with the rise of interest in retro and fogey fashion is it time for these amazing items to make a come-back?
