I always like watching these because the mannerisms of people back in the day are just ever so slightly different than they are today and it’s really interesting. For instance, many of them make direct and sustained eye contact with the interviewer and the interviewer stands far closer than he would today.
@Posark
@Posark Год назад
That’s interesting, I have noticed a difference before I could not quite put my finger on it. It’s like they were (in general) more sincere and serious about things. Maybe “earnest” is the word. Or frank?... More direct and straightforward in their approach to other people and life. They seem almost naïve in some ways but it was an era when trust, fair play, self discipline, “hard work pays off” were still all tried-and-true and *widely accepted* guidelines for living a good life. And it showed, even in the way they would casually interact and respond to a stranger asking a question.
@JohnBrownsBody
@JohnBrownsBody Год назад
@@Posark Yeah I definitely noticed that as well! My initial guess would be that it has something to do with lack of smartphones and headphones, and so they are more fully engaged in their surroundings and by extension the conversation with the interviewer. Earnest is definitely how I would describe it, like they had to take a second to think about their answer instead of firing off the first thing that came into their head.

jt t the time efficiency gains from new technologies like washing machines and vacuums was short lived because people’ standards of cleanliness (and how many clothes to own) increased lol. So the amount of time spent on cleaning and stuff stays constant. If you keep expectations modest you save a lot of time. As for the other part, average beauty has increased. Fewer people suffer smallpox, goiters, nutritional deficiencies, cleft palates, fewer people smoke and tan and we have tech likes braces, tooth whitening, better skincare etc. It’s not that the upper end of attractiveness has gone up but the lower end has been greatly uplifted (what holds us back most is obesity). This is more obvious when you look at photographs and painted depictions of humans from further back. Lots of very sickly looking homely Victorians and disappointing ‘beauties’.

My grandpa never helped with housework, but good heavens, he cut 3 acres with a single blade riding mower, worked in the garden and tended 1.5 acres of strawberries, and repaired literally everything on their property. If he had tried to interfere in Granny's kitchen, she would have rushed him back outside to get him out from under her feet. I think all I ever saw him do in the kitchen was pour his own coffee and fill a glass with water throughout the day, and even then she would stop what she was doing and run him off. 😂😂😂

To be fair, the women were raising more kids on an average and domestic chores weren't as automatic as now, so I'm guessing the housework (beyond rearing) would have been neglected unless he stepped up. A lot of these people were born in the 1800s. The majority of them said that men should help. It really brings the light the fact that the current narrative that "men were always domineering and selfish while women worked tirelessly to serve men, and only feminism changed that dynamic'" is extremely incorrect.

My dad was a police lieutenant who also did side handyman jobs sometimes on the weekend to help make ends meet and he always participated in caring for the home when he was home. My stepmom never took out the trash for instance...never even had to ask. He took initiative and did it. She preferred doing all the cooking and most of the light cleaning, but he did heavy cleanings and the repairs and yard were taken care of asap. Especially to note, he didn't spend his down time adding to the mess. Dirty clothes went to the hamper, dishes to the sink, and if he was the only one who had eaten, he washed them;he didn't leave them for someone else! He helped make the beds after sheets been washed cus it was a king-sized bed and more efficient for two to work together to get it done. He modeled real manhood and leadership...he never thought any work beneath him.

Kyle Maritz How do the 90s look time traveling reporter? Well the Soviet Union collapsed in on itself and the US never had to fire a shot. That sounds rather anticlimactic. What about America? How is it fairing not having an enemy to avoid fighting? Well all the wives are working because of a thing called the feminist movement. All that extra income sounds nice. How has that improved the quality of life? Well they’re spending all that extra income on children’s toys they call Bernie Babies. Well I suppose that’s practice if they’re having as many children to raise as we are. They’re not having many kids. In fact, they’re relying on mass immigration from countries where the women can barely even read to maintain the population. Well it’s nice to help out others around the world I suppose. Are they working well in the factories to maintain America’s standing as a manufacturing superpower? No they’re just getting welfare, all the factories are moving to Mexico and China. That reminds me of the downfall of Rome. What is our generation doing to combat this problem? Oh our generation is focused on mastering a dance craze called the Macaroni.

Watching this, I understood that old English just as gorgeous and calming as soviet Russian. I don’t know how, but people of that time speak reasonably, calmly, they have structure of thoughts and literally no unnecessary words or sounds, just like TV or radio announcers. And quite often they give clever and humanistic opinions, more clever and more humanistic than the next generations.

I kept seeing the most noticeable change in social behavior in the transitioning from 98', 99' to the 2000s. I was over in the states as an exchange student for a semester back then and I witnessed the release of MTV's "Jackass" - boy did it feel wrong to watch people giving two homeless guys money so they eould punch each other in the face for pure entertainment! I was disgusted for real! Sadly that show and similar other shows became widely popular and so did socially acceptable bullying and violence! I watched it first hand happening around me in my early twenties and could not grasp what was happening... I believe media had a HUGE impact on the young generations... And when loserkids suddenly could be famous for doing stupid things on camers, up was down and right was left...

I don't know where to write this but... Few years ago RU-vid's seemingly entire comment section was filled with toxicity to no end, it was bad, negative, and people liked it and joined each other in belittling others, I wanted to quit watching videos and looking at comments because of that. Nowadays, there isn't a single comment section that doesn't make me laugh like a kid or feel wholesome by someone. Something's changed so much, I'm soooo happy to see this change... ❤️❤️

The older generation understood that by helping on the weekends shows that they love and respect their wives.....it makes the wife feel appreciated and cared for, not just financially, but also emotionally. Edit: Hate to inform you all but I do not work outside the home, I do ALL the laundry, ALL the cooking, do ALL the purchasing, drive my three kids to ALL their school related events and after school scout meetings and music lessons and doctor appointments, help out with fund raising and planning events related to what my kids are involved in, I coordinate things (doctor appointments and big home repairs) for my husband, I dust, vacuum, sweep, clean, organize our home, deal with the virtual learning that's going on right now. I maybe get five hours of sleep on a good day, and I gotta say when my husband randomly grabs out the vacuum and does it I love him even more because what he just did for me was say "thank you for ALL that you do for me and the kids" with an act of service. Has nothing to do with division of labor in my home, it has to do with love languages and a spouse recognizing that sometimes the other person could use and appreciate an act of kindness. I never mentioned gender roles, I wasn't commenting about gender roles at all.

You're partly right but maybe it's more that the "older men" in the footage were most likely retired and so had more time than the younger ones to help out at home... luckily now house prices are so ridiculously high that we can all share the house work/ full time jobs/children etc equally and work ourselves in to an early grave ... now that's progress 🙄🤭 Edit.... "hate to inform you all but....." then goes on to give total strangers every detail about her life! 😅🤣 You do realise its not all about you, I think people were giving their opinion on the video 🤦
