www.crosstraini... tractionerag.com Should you buy a 450 dirt bike? Or buy a big bore enduro bike?You might think it's cool to dig a trench and spray roost everywhere, but a key skill is learning how to get power to the ground without excessive wheelspin. You will be approaching corners faster, so you will probably hit the brakes too early and actually be slower. There's a reason motocross riders start in the 250 enduro class. Literally. The kind of terrain is important. If you ride a lot of soft sand a 450 will not have to work as hard. If you ride a lot of desert or wide open trails in top gear then you will be revving less with the 450 enduro bike. Ditto if you plan to ride to the trails on road. Some riders adapt big thumpers into light weight adventure bikes and it makes a lot of sense to have the low revs and fewer maintenance intervals. And ditto if you buy a set of motard wheels to embarrass sports bike riders in the twisties. Some riders in cooler climates change their dirt bikes into snow bikes for the winter, and you definitely need at least a 450 dirt bike for snow riding. And finally there are guys who love low down grunt, and I'm in that category. I'm not into fast riding or revving bikes, but I'm a fan of grunt. So if you are a beginner, definitely don't buy a 450 dirt bike, unless you are looking for a really fun way to kill yourself. 450 too powerful? And why not go all the way and get Suzuki's DR1800? If you are reasonably experienced, it might be an option. But again, if you are serious about becoming a good rider you will learn faster on a 250 four stroke. And live to tell the tale, not on the big bore dirt bike . I even started our cross training on a Husaberg 570 for this reason. I've seen this again and again on dirt bikes and road bikes when the bike's power overwhelms the rider's skill. 450 dirt bikes are usually a few kg heavier, but there's the rotational mass as well. You can flick the bike around as easily in corners, so again you will learn faster on a smaller bike. A common expression is anything more than 20 hp is just wheelspin. If you love grunt instead of revs, and ride open trails then the 450 big bore dirt bike could be a great choice. Of course there might be reasons to not buy a four stroke at all, but we've covered those in another vid. Remember too we have a great choice nowadays. It used to be either a four stroke 250 or a 450 but now we have all these other capacities, each with their own characteristics... 300s, 350s, 390s, 430s and 500s. Enjoy! Can you tame down the power of a big four stroke then grow into it? Yes, within limits. One of the best mods is a G2 Throttle Tamer which makes the initial throttle reponse very soft. If you have a mapping switch, put it on low. Bikes like the Yamaha WR450F can be remapped with a device to tune it from mild to wild. Going one tooth bigger on the front sprocket can soften the power hit, and you can also put a quiet tip in the exhaust to try and restrict the power a little. Of course these mods only soften power delivery, and won't make the bike lighter or easier to throw around. So when should you buy a 450 dirt bike? Some riders are less concerned about becoming good riders, and are adrenalin junkies ready to accept the risks. If so, buy a 450 and knock yourself out. And while it's not true in every situation, it is a good rule of thumb. We were stunned at the lap times Megs Braap was cutting on various bikes with one third the power of a 450 enduro bike. In some cases, yes. In most cases, probably no. The key question is there really an advantage to buying a big four stroke? Or do you have horsepower-induced brain freeze, and you think that ridiculous amounts of power will turn you into Ricky Carmichael? Or do you have very small genitals and you are looking for excessive power as a substitute? A guide to choosing a dirt bike. Unless you a very experienced rider, you will take longer to improve your skills on a big thumper, make more mistakes, and be more likely to hurt yourself. Is a 450 too powerful? Why? And Shane Watts is a big believer in small is beautiful. He deliberately entered the gruelling ISDE on a 125 and won the championship, just to show that it's not about outright power. I did some timed laps on a 125, 300 and 350 and was amazed how much quicker I was on the 125.

My first bike was a YZ426. It was a beast, and as you said, it held me back. The rotational mass made it hard to turn too. I dumped it for a little kdx220 and was instantly riding better. I can turn now! The 450 class bikes hate going slow and flame out at low rpm, so you really can't even use that torque on slow technical terrain.
@BobJones20001
@BobJones20001 4 года назад
@Dash Rides. That's a great example of real experience. My 450 is great for high speed blasting, but my development almost stifled at times, it was hard going in the tough stuff. The fatigue and weight (only 15kgs extra out of a combined mass of 200 so its not a lot) was heavily boosted by time on my light weight 250. On this bike with a combined mass of about 185, and a low rotating mass of the 2 stroke was a transformation. I wanted to spend more time practising as well.

@@court2379 Jerky? Or unpredictable/laggy? I guess that'd be from the EXUP or something
@court2379
@court2379 3 года назад
@@autismion It's consistent and predictable. You are holding the throttle steady in the mid range somewhere. You are standing. You decrease the throttle slightly. The rpms drop suddenly, the bike slows abruptly and somewhat sends you over the handlebars. So then you give it a bit more throttle to recover the rpms and it does the opposite, rpms come up abruptly jerking you forward. It is less pronounced at higher rpms. When you are doing tight slow turns or avoiding obstacles at slow speeds it is much harder to manage than it should be, and you are more likely to make a mistake. It seems like they made the response too fast. There needs to be a smoother ramp up between one position and the next. Not just a well the throttle says more, so I'll immediately add that full amount. Slow down the speed that it can change by a small amount. Maybe it detects it has enough air to add the entire amount of fuel requested and so does causing a surge in power. A carburator you change position the slide and needle open, but the fuel sucked up is dependent on the air velocity. The engine hasn't changed speed yet, so the pumping rate hasn't changed yet. The area has increases, so the velocity drops and the fuel pulled up doesn't increase as much as the change in orifice opening would indicate should happen. It then takes a few cycles for the engine speed to come up and everything stabilize. You learn to compensate for the touchy throttle somewhat by being very careful with the amount you turn it, but it would be much nicer to ride at slower speeds if there was better programming.

From personal experience i have to say that the 2024 450 XCFW from KTM Cannot be overlooked. It turns in and handles like any 250 but with the options for all that extra grunt for those long rocky hill climbs and of course the wide open trails plus the mapping and traction control. Which I only turned on 6 months later. I have to say this 450 is incredible. I started riding again at age 46 after 22 years since selling my 1996 KX125. I jumped back into riding on a 2017 KTM 150 XCW and it was/still is a great bike especially for tight single track and technical rocky stuff. Love this bike. . Its demands a lot of attention. Wants you always on your feet and on the pipe, lots of shifting. I ended up handing that down to my son 4 years later I went to a 2020 250 XCF that a buddy had dialed in for sprint enduros and hare scrambles and that I further tweaked for long haul dual sports. Man I love this bike …and I vow to never sell it. I really improved so much on this bike …it was my first ever 4 stroke and I got incredibly faster on it. Enter the 2024 450XCF-W. On a ride trip to Colorado last summer 2000 miles from home my the sprag clutch on the 250 went on the first day of a 5 day trip. Wit’s no shot at getting parts in time I went to local KTM dealer and there it was the only 2024 model they had. After hearing about all the suspension and geometry changes made to the bike I decided to go for it. I am so glad I did. Similar to the jump from the 150 two-stroke to the 250 four-stroke I found my self becoming a much better rider. I have to say it’s as nimble to me as either of my previous bikes but w that extra ability to get that front tire up and over things w far less effort. The smooth linear power combined w the mapping and traction control options are great . The only modifications I made so far was adding a Rekluse clutch and X31 up front and a Tusk Recon out back, both with Moose Balls. No need to tune for more OR less power. Other than setting the sag i have not touched a single suspension setting. I’m 5’-10” 170 w/ my gear on. Like everything else it’s all personal preference. But for me this linage has been great. I guess the only thing left to try now is a 300 two-stroke. I did a few sections on a 2014 300 Six Days a few years back and I really did like it… a lot. But For now I’m hooked on this particular 450 model. Hope someone finds this helpful. The truth is that any bike that is in good working condition and gets out on the trails is a great bike. Ride on!

My first bike was an 02 yz250F. It was an absolute junk of a bike. It took 10-15 minutes to cold start it AFTER a carb rebuild. By the time its running, you already need to take a break. I felt somewhat underpowered but also paranoid about the bike stalling. In fact, it was so bad that when a kid has a gnarly crash next to me, the parents tells me to keep my bike running and dont worry about the kid. 🤣 Anyway, I bought a new 2019 YZ450F because it was on sale ($7,000) and i decided to mod it for enduro riding. Long story short, the 450 DOES NOT like technical trails even after all of the modding, but it does love open desert and wide open sand. Most of my families drive their RZRs, so the 450F does a good job keeping up with them. If i could do it all over again, I would've either waited a year and buy the YZ250FX or the Husky TE150i. Im definitely gonna buy a TE150i in the future, it looks like an amazing bike for hard enduro tracks.

I found my wr450 easier to ride then smaller bikes, I’m not a great rider but I’ve found the low down torque to be a huge help and the power delivery was definitely controllable no where near as scary as a yz250, in an ideal world I’d own a smaller bike for mx and enduro but I was doing beach riding and a lot of long trails, the heavy blue cocksucker let me do everything Fark I miss that bike

Here's my opinion, most dealerships are fuckin brain dead selling beginners big machines, especially dirtbikes, snowmobiles and ATV'S, I see it on my dealers Facebook all the time. Why would a lil woman need a 1000cc polaris atv, or a 850 cc snowmobile that's pushing 174 horsepower? there's a new rider we know, she's got maybe 40 to 60 hours on a bike and our dealer keeps trying to pawn off a new YAMAHA T7 on this small beginner rider who is on a klx140 for off road and a xt250 for road use. I'm afraid for her life. As for snowmobiles, so many new riders expect to jump on the biggest baddest sled and not get hurt. These things pull 100mph in less the 100 meters for anyone thats never rode a sled. For example my 2019 Polaris assault 800 is just over 400 pounds and 165 horse power. 117 miles per hour top speed on radar, and zero to 100 is as fast as you can think from corner to corner on a trail. Its so fun. Here's the hard part, slowing it down to make the next turn... Its basically like giving a first time car driver the keys to a new corvette and telling them go drive as fast as you can cuz there's no rules out there, and here's a 12 pack of beer in case your thirsty. Ya very stupid..... do ya need a 450... FUCK NO.....

I jumped from "my" CRF 150/my Dad's XR 200/any bike I could borrow to my CRF 450, but I had been riding for 10 years at that point. I was still on my CRF 150 (old version, 2004) when I rode a CRF 250 for the first time. I thought wow, this is a real bike! Good vid as always Bazza, but you forgot us guys that ride at high elevation. ICE engines are down on power 3% for every 1,000ft above sea level. Try taking your bike to 13,000ft. You'll be down 40% on power at the top. I've had guys on 250 dual sports tell me they had to get off and walk beside their bike over the technical spots on the high passes, as they we burning up their clutch trying to go over the big rocks.

interesting... we were riding above the treeline a lot at the grizzbait event in northern BC and there wasn't a noticeable difference i think the peaks around there were only 7000 feet though. but i do remember in romania you could feel the TPI bikes getting a big doughy on top of the mountain ranges, although that wasn't above the tree line.

Having recently progressed from a yz125 to a 530exc I am glad I had that period learning to ride on the little bike. Ultimately it was my fitness that pushed me to larger capacity bike with E-start. A lack of decent condition 200exc forced me to look elsewhere and I settled on a big bore simply as it was a good bike/price. Thanks to all my years on small bikes I can handle the big rig reasonably well in the tight, technical stuff singles around home but had I not had that education prior, it would have been a horrible experience. Next bike will be a 125-200cc though. Go the small bore!

Had my wr450 2022 model for a year, its now got 70 hours on it and im loving riding it. I did go up a tooth on the front and down three on the back so it could to ride to the trails a bit more. It also tamed that power a little and meant I needed to learn to use the clutch more. Ive been learning to do so many things that I never wanted to do on my DRZ like dropping off steps and climbing steep steps. Im starting to learn how to slow wheelie but letting the clutch out so quickly is still something im struggling to make myself do.

I went from a drz400 to a 2020 wr250f best thing I’ve done for my riding, very glad I didn’t get the 450. The dealerships make it a lot easier to buy a 450 especially when it comes to Yamaha, they seem to do the majority of factory savings on the 450s but not the 250s 🤷🏽‍♂️ half the guys I ride with would be a lot better on something smaller

Mindset can also be an important decider when thinking about big bores: if you're convinced it's all/mostly about the bike, then a small bore machine is going to be better. If you know it's 90% the rider, then it doesn't really matter *if* the power is controllable, bike height and suspension suit the rider (they represent the 10%). Note on the 10%: Looking at the comments, most of the stereotypical 450 experiences (weight, abrupt power delivery) relate to the Big Blue or Big Red machines. The FI Kato/Husky's (Austrian Husky) are a very different kettle of fish: light, easy power (EXC/FE only - The 450 MX'ers from Austria are turds in the bush). The easiest is the 500; the 450 is snappier but still lighter and much easier than Big Blue or Big Red.

Love my DR350S, friend would always take his big 660/600/750 yamaha's (He has and still owns several frank-n-bikes as he calls em). Enough power to get you in trouble, its delivery is very predictable, ~60mpg, street legal, fun to ride, whats not to love. Friend recently got a honda 200/250, he has much more fun not fighting the weight of his bigger bikes, even if hes got the throttle pinned 95% of the ride just trying to say out in front of me. Also i'm acutely a fan of the CV carb as there is a lot of mountain near me, climbing up 1/2 mile or more in altitude from the trail head after climbing a mountain(or at lest part of it since i start at ~5000 foot above sea in my front yard) to get to the trail isn't uncommon near me.
