I'm noticing that the smiths I watch and subscribe to also seem to watch the same channels. for some reason it gives me a little feeling of belonging to this group of people I respect.
good to know and nice exlanined. I brush after fire welding the rests of borax and scale too see if its worked or not and to get new borax on the steel not on the scale
I agree Roy brushing scale off to create more wastes material. Waiting for the temperature to drop off is the smart move. Keeping the anvil clean is also a good idea
Brushing from a high heat does help take off thicker nastier scale, such as when you’ve been forge welding wrought or the fire is a little dirty. And can improve the finish of a piece if done aggressively from that high heat on down, it will take off much more scale and leave a finer finish in the end
One would think youtube, merchandise (t shirts, etc) and fees for classes are probably his main sources of income - so some wasted heat isn't really a big deal.
If I want to intentionally develope a texture to the metal, say a set of barn door hinges so they don't look freshly manufactured. What would be a good technigue? Could you cover that process in a video. ANVIL AND AXE creates some beautiful pieces that have some texture as I described, that I have seen on Instagram. I personally don't care for the hot off the press look. I want them to look like they were made by a blacksmith. To modify Brian Breazal's favorite saying: If you want it perfect; Buy It!
