Well explained. As a physio that combines osteopathic hands on techniques and physio rehab exercises I find it's a good combo that works for me. In an ideal world, it would be good to see more cross referrals between the occupations for different areas of specialties.

I’ve tried Physiotherapists and Chiropractors and none have given me the results that a Non-Physician Osteopath has given me. Normal Osteopaths are just normal physicians and don’t have the same understanding of the body as Non-Physician traditional Osteopaths, my Non-Physician Osteopath was the only one who looked beyond my problems to identify what was the cause of all my problems. From a life saving surgery i had from a ruptured Appendix as a kid, it took 11 years until the adhesions that formed from the infection that spread in my abdominal cavity became problematic, causing me SiBO, Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction, and Pelvic Floor Dysfunction, all at 19 years-old and as a Freshman in college. My Osteopath makes a living treating people with complex and complicated health problems that normal Physicians have no knowledge or idea of how to treat. I’m finally starting to heal after 10 long months of living in hell, at least that’s what living in my body has been.

Very nice, balanced answer to what is a difficult question. I think Physiotherapists in the NHS, by offering just exercise prescription, is flawed. Yes, it may help some, but for many people, they also need a hands on approach in order for the patient to carry out the prescribed exercises safely. There are some physios who have undertaken additional post graduate training (e.g. in manipulative therapy) but I personally would prefer an Osteopth/Chiropractor + Pilates.

A fair and unbiased explanation for a very common question posed to practitioners of all disciplines .. With the melding and blending of knowledge and skills, I wonder if in time we may all come together under the umbrella of "physical therapist" .. we all receive comments in support or against a particular discipline and your explanation of the right patient with the right condition with the right therapist at the right time in conjunction with patient (client) confidence is a powerful healing opportunity ... nice work :)

I prefer the Osteopath but I don’t think any will help my scoliosis, or root block, or my bent spine, if you more details let me know.

It is extremely worrying to hear you say different physios will use very different treatment forms for the same issue. This is not the case with surgery for, say, a hip replacement, or conventional pharmaceutical treatment for cancer. The seemingly willy-nilly approach of complementary wellness treatment is what keeps me away from chiropractors in particular. Physios and their stupid stick-figure diagram instructions for patients that they give after a bit of manipulation is like “well.. I’ve done something to you with my hands now go away and it’s up to you to get better”. $$$$$$$ no care. AND ..different practitioners give different exercise instructions. Just look at all the different RU-vid videos for rotator cuff injury, bursitis or lower back issues. 1,000s of different prescriptions from ‘physical therapists’. There seems to be no systematic and consistent prescriptive approach used by these practitioners that gives me the feeling that they implement a hard-science-backed approach. The last physio I saw concluded rotator-cuff injury without any scans and sent me away to return after a week (as she wasn’t back at that clinic until then) with no guidance on using/not using my arm and no management suggestions (I was too zonked by lack of sleep to ask. I was in pain and could not sleep at all. I then went to my GP who sent me for ultrasound (no rotator cuff issue nor bursitis), gave me strong anti-inflammatory medication, told me to rest and use heat packs and sleeping tablets. Thank god for him and conventional medicine! I’m sleeping now and slowly getting better. I get more satisfaction from lower-skilled masseurs that promise relaxation than physios that claim they can help chronic pain. Sorry. You can delete/block me, but I think my experience is more common than physios, chiros and osteopaths believe is the case. Only a % of patients return to these practitioners.

shahad Yes, definitely. Lots of PT’s train in osteopathy after graduating. You may even get to reduce the training length since you are already trained in anatomy. The first year of osteopathy is anatomy. Just contact your local osteopathic training institutions and ask their advice. Warmest wishes, Coby

Absolutely. With your PT knowledge and skills, you would already be several steps ahead of the game, compared to other students. I'm not sure, why you would want to do this though. I can only share this with you. I am a US trained, and licensed Chiropractor. I have been practicing since 1994. If I could do it all over again, I would of gone to school to be a US DO, Doctor of Osteopath, and do a fellowship in OMT manipulation. That being said, there are probably only one DO compared to 10 MDs, in the states. Now, with those DOs, only about one out of 20, do OMT manipulation on a regular basics. I have been adjusted by US DOs before, and it doesn't even compare to a typical Chiropractic adjustment. They most do, soft tissue, and strain, counter strain techniques, on the cervical spine. Now, I've heard there are some OLD school DOs thar really know how to adjust. I can also tell you, not until recently, PTs were not allowed to do joint manipulations, like Chiropractors, obviously being almost a PT, you know PTs mostly work with the muscles, and the muscles, pull the joints. I would always tell my patients to get a massage before their adjustment, gor that reason, also, they would be more relaxed to. Back to your original question, I'm just not sure why you would want to incur the additional expense, and studies, unless you want two acrymons next to your name PT DC, instead of just one... Good luck though...

Hi Mak, I've shadowed 2 chiropractors for a week each, had chiropractic treatment myself and also investigated it when considering studying it. I've also had endless conversations with chiropractors discussing the difference between the 2 treatment forms and have been trained at University about what the difference between the treatment forms are. I've done my very best to understand it! Warmest wishes, Coby

did you? were they actual chiropractors, or just spine manipulators/therapists with chiro degree and license calling self chiropractor? you haven't a clue of the difference, do you, but how would you? you have reason to believe they are what they and their certificates claim they are, but do they believe and practice real chiropractic? the majority of those who claim to be chiropractors, aren't. unless they do both, they aren't chiropractors according to it's founders, no matter what papers they have that seem to prove otherwise.
@SootheClinic
@SootheClinic 6 лет назад
Hello Mak, I'm not sure I can comment on that issue! In the UK Chiropractors are regulated by a governing body so I would assume they are not allowed to practice under the title chiropractor unless they are registered. Certainly osteopaths cannot call themselves osteopaths unless the are registered with the GOsC. My video is only trying to give a general overview of the professions in the UK. Warmest wishes, Coby

thank you for your polite response. chiropractic is widely misunderstood, ironically, mostly due not to disinformation in medical propaganda, but from the failure of the institutions which supposedly provide an education in it. as chiropractic education began to fail, first the techniques to realize the philosophy went, then the foundation, the philosophy itself. few institutions remain that teach much of either. the result is "chiropractoids" rather than chiropractors- graduates who are certified as such but don't even know what it is about, much less how to practice it. they have been miseducated into adopting the exact opposite approach, the allopathic approach of their enemies, the medical profession. almost none of the public has any clue what genuine chiropractic is either, and little wonder with this pathetic state of things among those who purport to represent it. what differentiates genuine chiropractic from all else, including spinal manipulative therapies, is correction of cause. either you correct cause or merely manipulate/suppress/play with/mickey mouse effects. to quote dr. b.j. palmer d.c., "to stimulate or inhibit peripheral function is to practice medicine." failing to correct the cause, this is why medicine in all it's forms, fails to get sick well.
@SootheClinic

Wow thats really interesting. It is a shame if what you say is true - I am sure the founders of chiropractic would be very sad to see this. I am sure there are many chiropractors who remain true to the original science of chiropractic though - you obviously are one of them! Warmest wishes, Coby.
