Whitlock did ply football and he was barely average. Jason Witten does something that most tight ends do not do...like Gates and Gonzales...HE was a GREAT blocker, the most complee tight end since JOhn Mackey
Felony Strutter he was so average when I was watching the other players I don’t ever remember hearing his name. He should sit back and listen to hall of famers not hall of average.
He played with a broken jaw, he played with a ruptured spleen, he played with great reception numbers and he was a great blocker. You can put him in on any down and he could block for you or catch anything you throw at him. So how you don’t put him in the Hall of Fame is beyond me.
1. He didn’t sit with his teammates on flights, he flew first class with the Jones family. Is that a move of a team captain? 2. He didn’t change the game. He simply ran five to eight yard routes. 3. His teams failed in the postseason. Championship matter when talking HOF. 4. Do we remember Witten deciding to retire to join ESPN during the NFL draft? Classless move? 5. Do we not forget Witten was with Romo at Cabo during a postseason bye? That sticks on Romo, but Witten has been forgiven of that. 6. Witten was good, not great, his back half of his career his lack of any separation limited the Cowboys offense. I’m a Cowboys fan, yet my definition of a Hall of Fame Inductee is strict. If Witten had 40 more touchdowns and won a Championship on his resume, my thoughts would be different.
According to your logical standards, Houston Texans WR Andre Johnson shouldn't be in the HOF, either even though he retired with over 2,000 more receiving yards than Witten, only won 2-3 post-season games, played on less winning teams than Witten's Cowboys, never truly had a game-breaking long-term franchise Pro Bowl QB like a Romo or Dak Prescott ( best overall QB Andre Johnson played with was Matt Schaub, a former Falcons cast-off and Vick's backup who had some very good seasons from 2007-13, had a decent career, overall). Andre Johnson's situation reminds a lot of Steve Largent's dilemma with Seattle from 1976-89 in that he was a All-Pro, legendary WR who's best numbers came from Dave Krieg and he never had his "elite QB" like Rice did with Montana, and later Steve Young. We shouldn't hold Andre Johnson's lack of comparative team success or post-season success in same way HOF never held it against Largent, James Lofton, arguably Art Monk. How many HOF QB's did Cris Carter play with during his long and winding career with Eagles, Vikings, and Dolphins'. You shouldnt hold that rigid formula or perception against Jason Witten or Andre Johnson that their HOF chances should be affected by never winning a SB or scoring 100 TD's.
trufiend138 Witten better than gates and Gronk just becaause of his ability to block; the only knock on witten is he didn’t win a ring... He was the best tight end in the NFC every year for like ten years.... thousand yards season was unheard for tight ends prior to him and Gonzales.... Witten play the game tough and with a high IQ... I think fans that appreciate football played in between the trenches appreciate witten a little better...
lem farba I hate the Cowboys but there was never any doubt. He’s not in my top 5 TE all time bc other guys were good blockers too but much better threats....but he’s been legit
trufiend138 dumbest shit I’ve here, not saying he was the BEST te in the league but he was always a top 5 and arguably a top 3 for a few years. Come on now
I believe that a Ray Lewis is part of the panel then nobody else's opinion matters. And I'm not making a joke, if they're talkin about a player that played during Ray Lewis's era and Ray Lewis is on the panel what difference does anybody else's opinion make? Who cares what Jason Whitlock or Cowherd thinks at that point
Witten is the textbook definition of a great tight end. Crisp routes. Great blocker. Soft hands. It's a position designed to create short plays and move the sticks.
Jason Whitlock should not be a football analyst. He's way to biased when talking about cowboy players. Since when did stats not matter when talking about if a player is good or not.
@@bigred9991 Stats don't matter sometimes.I remember one ravens game we won and all the media was saying was how great Ray Lewis had played so many sacks and all these tackles for loss.I got so pissed.Haloti Ngata had just played the greatest game I had ever seen by a DT in my life getting basically triple teamed the whole game and still getting pressure and totally shutting down the run game. You know what his stat line read 0 tackles 0 sacks. If you never watched the game and read the stats you would of said he didn't do much. You would of missed one of the greatest games by a DT ever.Pure domination.
@@GL-ys8je that's fine and dandy. A DT in a 3-4 is supposed to do just that eat as many blockers as possible so Uncle Ray Ray could fly to the ball carrier. You can't compare a TE to a defensive lineman. That's apples to oranges. Offensive players get graded out by stats. How many catches, yds, TD's etc. etc. After that it's the secondary stats that matter like blocking or drawing double teams so everyone else can be a threat. Jason Witten is the best complete TE the NFL has seen since day one. He was so good at blocking that when the cowboys got in the red zone he was to valuable of a blocker to run routes and his TD numbers are no where near where they should have been.
Jason Witten was also Drew Bledsoe‘s number one receiver when he played for the Cowboys, it wasn’t because they were friends it was because he was open.
no matter whether or not you like the cowboys, there should be no debate about Witten getting into HoF , could he block (yes) - could he move the chains(yes) - could he score touchdowns(yes) , however any decision is years away and for me i do hope he gets into the HoF .
Without watching this vid, how is this even a question? Anyone from any team as a TE who plays at the level Witten has deserves 1st yr eligibility HOF.
Or the fact that he is just a "productive" player. Like no shit that is the definition of what you are looking for in a player. Oh and also the fact that he just went to work and never had an issue with getting in trouble or being a diva.
Josh Talbott I don’t need Rays perspective on a TE considering Ray was terrible in pass coverage. Wittens legacy was solid long before Ray said anything
deciuswtasby you're joking right? Not about whether or not Ray was good in coverage, but that Ray's opinion doesn't matter. So Colin Cowherd who never got past High School football his opinion mean something but Ray Lewis one of the greatest linebackers in NFL history his opinion means nothing? Keep in mind Ray Lewis was in the defensive meetings versus the Cowboys when they had to come up with a game plan to stop their offense
As a Giants fan I was never afraid of Romo or TO or Dez or Zeke. I was always afraid of Witten! He can block, and receive. Catch and run for a TD. You could double him up and he'd still get open and catch the ball and move the chains.
Teams had to game plan for Witten all the time cause he would punish you even covered and Tony g said himself Witten is the best all around tight end to ever play and that's coming the best tight end in NFL history
Are you kiddind me?! This ain't even a question! Hell Yes! He's a First Ballet Hall Of Famer! Jason Witten is the greatest TE in NFL history! TE's also block! Tony Gonzales couldn't block. He was a one trick pony. Witten could do it all, and was the greatest overall complete TE in the history of the NFL...Point Blank, end of discusion!
Witten has a very high level of consistency, near to none injuries, could get that 3rd down conversions in the big moments and does it for years, shut down blocker!!
Ray Lewis understands because he had to game plan n prepare for him...Witten would combo block a DE then release n take out a linebacker to seal edges on running plays...So that's one thing to worry about defensively getting blocked by Witten, then on play action when u think it's a running play,Witten fakes the combo block and release into a route...you ever notice why his slow ass was always wide open when he caught those balls that's why,his threat of run blocking...he also is underrated as a route runner...he has quick feet and he uses leverage and linebackers speed n aggression against them...Jason Witten is the most fundamentally sound TE I've ever seen,he doesn't rely on physical ability,he beats you mentally throughout the course of a game.the casual fans only see catches n touchdowns, but look at him on running plays...that's why we gonna run the ball down every body throat this year n zeek gonna get his 3rd rushing title in 4 years....no doubt he's going to the hall of fame....
@@jermaine8657 Imagine if he had even a little vit more break away speed it would have been ridiculous. He also had all the non measurables. Like the fact that he broke his jaw and didnt miss a start or when he lacerated his spleen and also didnt miss a game. He has been one of the most reliable and upstanding players in the history of the nfl.
@@coreyhamby2989 if he had breakaway speed I'd put him up there with Tony Gonzalez...and statistically he prolly have all the TE records due his toughness n durability...Witten is a monster
Oh yeah...stats don't lie...Witten may not be a bad soul brother, but you cannot deny his production and longevity...every team had to game plan for Witten...he's a hall of gamer...stop hating...
Harry Martin that’s like saying gronk isn’t a hall of famer because he’s had Brady his whole career and they’re good friends too probably one of the dumbest things I’ve heard, the fact this guy has a show is unreal
I'm not a professional sports player & I never will be. But, a side from Witten being Romo's best friend, the guy has earned it. Being there for 15 years & doing what he can to help the Cowboys successful to win games & be an inspiration, he's earned it in my opinion. Did Romo throw the ball to Witten a lot on Y 95 option or whatever other play they ran? Yes, but Jason has done the rest.
How is this even a debate? He’s the Emmitt Smith of TEs. Not the most flashy but after Gonzales he was easily the most productive to ever do it. The discussion about his lack of touchdowns is easily explainable; Dez Bryant and Terrell Owens. In the red zone those were the guys who should get the ball.
IMO the hall is for players who were the best or close to the best at their position for a long career. Written was one of the top 2 or 3 tight ends in football for more than a decade.
As a Cowboys fan Witten is the best tight end, we ever had in franchise history. I believe he is a first ballot HOF player and if HOF linebacker Ray Lewis, who played against him, agrees who are we to dispute it.
Witten is one of the greatest tight ends to ever play. You can look at some receiver's QBs and go "well their QB was a hall of famer. They had a lot of help" witten's QB, while better than average, was not a hall of famer. So the fact that his stats are so great makes him first ballot in my book
Numbers don't lie, some folks didn't think T.O. deserved to be in the Hall of Fame, but the numbers don't lie. Here we have another situation where the numbers don't lie, JW did his job , and he did it well, put that man in Hall of Fame, he earned it...
I looked it up and interestingly unless my sources are wrong. Jason Witten is the exact same size as Gronk. Down to the inch and lbs. exactly the same. Also apparently Witten has a faster 40 time. Lastly as far as speed goes I mean he’s a TE not a Receiver. Isn’t that the point. Size over speed ? Also Witten had crazy hands for a big dude.
You can't just go on receptions and TDs. Blocking is very important, and some of those with higher reception and TDs weren't that impressive in blocking. They were just stout WRs.
HOF Period. Whitten was the best of his generation, even Gonzales said it. Why? Whitten did it all well. He was the most complete TE in the game. Only those that don't know football would even question his HOF status. Unfortunately, most people don't know football and think all the shiny toys are the best things. Let me ask a question. Which LT is better, the one that can pass block better than anyone but can't run block, or the guy that does both very well? Which RB is better, the one that runs great but can't catch or block, or the one that does it all well? Which WR is better, the one that catches everything but can't run routes, or the one that does both very well? Do you want the in box safety that tackles but can't cover, or the guy that does both very well? Do you want the DE that stops the run but can't get to the QB, or the guy that does it all well? Ok then.
This comment section alone says it all. There are a lot of people out there that hate the Cowboys. And usually the HOF discussion is a lot more split on opinion but I just scrolled through and couldnt dind a single person saying he shouldnt be in the Hall of Fame.
To me, the Hall of Fame is for guys who changed the game. Jason Witten goes into the Hall of Very Very good. Jason didn’t change the game. No one’s saying, “we need to find the next Jason Witten.
82 is a first ballot HOF. Who the fuck else runs down the field w/o a helmet, played with a torn spleen, missed ONE game in 15 yrs. Due to a broken jaw. Tell me who the fuck else is man enough to do that. I'm waiting???
Should be renamed: Football players school Fatlock, who knows nothing about football. Lewis: "That box that he works in, there's not a better TE that works inside of that box." preach brother!
Only missed 1 game due to injury in 14 years of football. Due to a broken jaw. This man played through injuries that would have sidelined Gronk for 6 weeks, yet people elevate Gronk over him. He brought his lunchpail to work every day, did the dirty work that doesn't show up on the stat sheet, lead by example and still managed to wind up with all time great receiving production. How in the HELL can somebody even argue he's not a Hall of Famer?
@@marloaffical6516 because they get paid to talk and arguing controversial opinions fills airtime. How boring of a segment is "Is Jason Witten a hall of famer?" "Yup, Yup, Yup, Yup." "Moving on then...."
