The biggest game changer is the supreme court’s decision on political immunity for the President. The stakes are infinitely higher now and will have permanent consequences.
Biden's a paradox. He's uncharismatic and impossible to figure out just how he handles this job at his age and mental capabilities, but his policies on infrastructure, gun legislation, climate change, insulin costs, these are all good and if Obama had done them everyone would know about them. Even without these successes I'd vote to have no president over donald trump.
That's not correct. Obama did far more than he gets credit for, especially with Trump's/McConnell's/conservatives' efforts to erase his legacy and progressives' disappointment which downplay his accomplishments. There is more to be said about Biden's "accomplishments" but time will tell how many were systemic changes or how much were headline grabbers with little everyday impact.

Biden has the lowest approval rating of ANY president in US history, you cannot expect someone who’s disliked that much to beat Trump, especially when he seems like he’s on the verge of death. I would vote for Biden but I’ve heard countless people, young and old, say that they voted for him in 2020 but they don’t see a point voting this year because in some ways, we are worse off than in 2019 or so, we are involved in two major wars and we are supporting a genocide with billions of tax dollars. The border control has only gotten worse and more extreme under Biden too, Biden is a republican by most metrics, he’s just not a fascist, I don’t think he can win frankly especially because he constantly seems like he’s going to keel over and die at any moment. He should be in the hospital, not traveling around the country taking amphetamines to stay awake. Trump is also senile and old as dirt but he seems more coherent so that argument doesn’t really work to dissuade people from voting for Trump because the contrast in how senile they seem on average is still pretty large.

I'm not voting for a person, or their debating skills, or eloquence. I'm voting for our rights, and our way of life. Regardless of how you feel about Joe Biden. One thing that we can count on is that in four more years, he'll be gone, and we can pick another president. With Trump, we won't have that anymore. Democracy will be gone, and we'll be stuck with Trump forever....
You know who else had a speech impediment and was not eloquent? Moses, who led in his 80's and needed supporters to hold his hands up for victory. Lesson to be learned from this Biblical character.
You are the FIRST commentator to explain that it's the staff who govern not the executive leader. Also a really intelligent and nuanced analysis with the right connection to the fabric of the story. Tremendous!
I was around in 1968 in L.A. We took in Vietnam refugees. I also remember the Rodney King riots and the ashes coming down on everything. The sadness that I felt at all of the hatred and righteous anger. Same as now. We need reminders of the tragedy. The end results. I think segments like these are a good start. I hope this gets watched a million times over.
At least Joe will have people that he will listen to and will do right for the country. Trump believes he knows everything, and the people around him will do as he says and want. They pledge their loyalty to Trump instead of the country. The country will pay a high price with Trump. Biden still has my vote, and we need to vote blue up and down the ballot.
"Joe will have people that he will listen to" people are telling him he's too old to run and he should drop out, did he listen to them? he's as much a ego maniac as trump, especially when he said "i don't think anyone's more qualified to be president or win this race than me"

Yeah. Make sure the Democratic Party runs the weakest candidate against the worst threat to America since the Civil War. That sounds like a really good idea.
I would be better for him to pick a vice president that would help him get more votes. Franklin D Roosevelt won his second term even tho they know he was dying. Not saying that Biden will die during his presidency
Thank you for your insight, this is valuable info for me to put this all in perspective. I will vote for Biden, that has never been in question. But I now have more validation for my support of him. Good work!
This is such a great application of history to our current reality. Thank you. I’m sharing in hopes that everyone gets what they deserve they need from it.
Don't trust strangers. Especially not politicians clinging to power. (I'll most likely vote Biden anyway because its pointless to try voting for anyone else if theres no other option, and I wouldn't vote for Trump if someone held a flame under my bare feet, but I'm not happy about the candidates we're being forced to choose from)
The thing to remember is that this is America. If “didn’t vote” was a presidential candidate, they’d win every year. The issue isn’t putting forward a better candidate than the other party. The issue is putting forward a candidate who can make a case to energize and get people out to vote for them, who has a positive vision for the country and leadership and charisma. The office of the president is not just a desk job. Campaigning is part of the job requirements. Too many people in America aren’t plugged into politics, they aren’t moved by the DNC just saying “we can’t let the republicans win” (they’re flawed for that cause the GOP represents an actual path to fascism but that’s not the point of this comment), they don’t know what’s going on so they just dismiss that as petty bickering. Most people have the belief that politics straight up doesn’t matter. You have to put forward a candidate, that can somehow break through the consumerist haze that has been built up in this country for over two centuries. It is not a compelling case to the average person who thinks really only about their own life, for you to go up and make the case that they must vote for the DNC or otherwise they’re allowing the republicans to win. That rhetoric is literally just the Democratic Party pushing off all responsibility onto voters as if they’ve done the best possible job they could governing and opposing Trump and the republicans, and that is insulting to our intelligence to suggest. I don’t know if Biden stepping down at this point will win the election, but I do know thus far the Democrats HAVE NOT done everything they could to win this election, and I’m not confident Joe Biden is going to win. The case for a candidate doesn’t make itself. Humans are perfectly capable of making a bad choice based on how it’s presented to them and their own biases.
Remember when Obama signed the Affordable Care Act, without which I would not be able to have health insurance, Biden on a hot mic, said "this is a big F'ing deal" that's our Joe, he's always been wonky but he's honest, hardworking Dems get stuff done and he defends the Constitution. Disarray can be a good thing sometimes. The Republican party would be in even further disarray than it already is if there was actually an effort by them to get rid of Trump. Would launching that effort be a bad thing for Republicans?

I was in high school during the 1968 democratic convention. There were riots all over the country, it was so scary and enraging. I joined the SDS after Bobby Kennedy was killed, it felt as though all hope was lost. They should stick with Biden and not risk the chaos of 1968. Excellent coverage, Garrison.

Biden's staying in because he wants to, not because he will get sued. Seems HF is adopting Trump's tactics of threatening lawsuits that will go nowhere.
I think learning about this historical context is great. Amazing that some aspects of our current situation mirror 1968. I think it’s important to point out, however, that in 1968 Richard Nixon wasn’t a former president running on a platform like Trump’s 2025 plan which truly threatens core democratic principles that many of us Americans cherish. If you haven’t read that plan, and you support Trump, it’s critical that you understand its implications. Unfortunately for Biden, his main draw is that he’s not Trump, which would be true of any other Democrat who ran, making me think that the biggest obstacle for the DNC is making sure that the people’s voices are heard in a democratic manner. I don’t think any candidate could do worse than Joe in this election.
One thing you got right: Nixon's Southern Strategy was not something that white America believed "threaten[ed] core democratic principles that many [white] Americans cherish." Nor do they believe this today.
THANK YOU!!! The fact that so many dems are PUBLICLY coming out against Biden in and of itself makes him even more unviable. It’s insane so many ppl think this weekend at Bernie’s candidacy is going to inspire anyone other than dedicated Biden fans. The dems need youth & Muslim and Arab voters to win. Joe Biden has been dancing on the grave of those votes for 9 months. He has no chance at Michigan with how disrespectful and unsympathetic he’s been to those demographics. He was selfish to run in the first place at his age. ESPECIALLY since he promised he wouldn’t to get us to vote for him a first time. He’s the one who robbed us of a primary bc he wasn’t up to the job of actually debating. And shame on his family and advisors for hiding his condition from us for so long. Not exactly democratic, since that’s what’s supposed to be on the ballot.
I remember Chicago 1968 very, very well. I was 17 and had graduated from high school in June. RFK died on that day. I started my first anti- Vietnam War demonstrations that year.

Joe has done a fantastic job-- and I will be voting blue no matter who. But because the stakes are so high, I think we need a blow-out-- and I don't think Joe can give us that. Look at his polls even before the debate; listen to interviews with independents and undecideds. We need those people, and among them, Joe's age was already a big liability. I think about 2008, when I was old enough to cast my first vote for president. At the time I was about as unplugged from politics as you could be. But I looked right and saw one more old white man in an unbroken chain of them, and when I looked left I saw something young and different-- and I voted for Obama on literally that alone. I've been thinking about that a lot lately. If I could drag that young me to this point now, what do I think he would do? I honestly think he'd just stay home. It'll be messy as hell and I hate that this is where we are. But I think Joe stepping aside would not only be truer to the party's values, but ultimately the best choice. Apologies for the lengthy post. Thanks and everyone hang in there.

I don’t think you’re accounting for how uniquely undemocratic this primary was. Multiple states didn’t even have primaries and others didn’t even allow the other candidates to petition to get on the ballot. Additionally, there’s a big difference between Lyndon Johnson and Joe Biden: the reason people want him to drop out. People don’t think Biden is mentally well enough to run the country. That’s a lot more serious than just dissatisfaction with the president.
Had there been a contested primary we would not yet know who the nominee is, so why does it matter if we change now? I remember the 1968 election as a child, I got my information from the kids on the school bus chanting the “Nixon sucks” or “down with Humphrey”, and the mentions of McCarthy. There was as I remember it a newspaper that came once a day if your family was able to afford it and the 6&11 o’clock news, that was where you learned about candidates. In this age of instant information everyone could be introduced to someone they had never heard of, have countless question and answer sessions, and discuss with each other the qualifications of a new candidate 24 hours a day until the day of the election. Comparing 1968 to today would be as bad as comparing 1968 to 1912 which is the same amount of time although easy of communication has more rapidly progressed in the last 50+ years.
@@MackenzieHamilton_ I agree but all this high road ba will have us on our knees. The difference is people on the left tend to be more educated so at least they’ll be able to figure out their participation is strategic and not faith-based

Interesting take...I'm still more in favor of Biden dropping out though. Have you seen the polls? He's down in every swing state. I think a younger, more aggressive Dem just has a better chance of beating Trump. Sure a contested convention might be chaotic but it could also energize the Dem base and move the national convo to something else besides Biden's age. If polls are even halfway accurate Biden is heading for a historic loss so I'd rather take my chances with someone else.
Trump was down in every poll in 2016 and look at how that turned out. Any new Democrat will not make a difference, not to mention the way polls are conducted skews towards conservatives. I would recommend looking at any poll and add 3-5 points to the Democrat. That will likely be more accurate.
I agree. I'm a Democrat all the way, but everyone in the country (even Democrats), was made nervous by his performance in the debate. Everyone. Trump also did awful, but Biden looked worse. If someone new is brought in, I think there would be a better chance of beating Trump
My question is this: how are you going to get unknown new younger person on the Ohio ballot when the deadline is before the convention and are you OK with losing those possible electoral college votes?

8:35 Was that a joke? I love you gusto though. The confidence and vigor in which you stated that bold faced lie was truly impressive. I almost believed in. In reality, the DNC restructured the primary calendar to box out other options, worked to keep alternative candidates off state ballots, engaged in media blackouts of alternative candidates, applied political pressure to prevent a generic democrat from running, etc. If transparent means "Imperceptibly tilting the stage in Biden's favor across the entire primary field, while discreetly torpedoing opponents, to give the appearance of a voter controlled primary result"..... then yes, it was a very transparent process. 13:03 So yes, lets hope the DNC chooses differently this time around. I don't know why people think it's a good idea to replace Biden this late in the election. Remember the last time the Democrats ran without an incumbent and fought for the nomination in a really contested primary? It was 2016, and we know how that story ended. Biden/Kamala 2024
The Republicans did the same thing in 2016 though and they won. I would even say that primary had even less of an incumbent (Trump never held political office) and there was even more drama and contesting of things since Trump was around.
Two points that the audience of this channel are failing to mention or acknowledge. 1. LBJ was not called on to resign because he was in a state of drastic mental decline with an inability to articulate clearly or maintain lucidity of thought throughout the day and night. 2. Biden won the so-called primary based on name recognition alone. He didn't debate because the Biden administration did not want to expose his deteriorating mental state. It's hard for any challenger to beat the president when the media refuses to give said challengers the exposure they need to build name recognition. If debates don't matter, why did the Biden campaign request the debate against Trump in June? This doesn't feel like 1968 to me, this feels like 2016 to me.
I’m sorry your populist king got his skull caved in by both a shower door and Joe Biden. What kind of a world would be living in if your kind didn’t teach MAGA how to be election deniers? “The election is rigged” was a Bernie Bro original, Trump just put out a more popular cover.
