The unfortunate thing is that all the armchair managers have no idea what Tavares does behind the scene to lead the team as captain. It’s on record that he’s had the whole team to his cottage. He’s had rookies live at his house until they were comfortable in the city and with the team. He gives a substantial amount of time and money to Toronto area charities. None of us know what he says or does in the dressing room, but Johnny Toronto certainly acts like a captain off the ice. You don’t need to be the best player on the team to be the captain. You need to have the respect of the players, and I think he has that in spades.
Why does the team sit back and allow Tavares to take a beating without sticking up for him then? Both from players and from opposing fans (remember how bad he got booed against the Islanders?) Either the team has no respect for him or the team is heartless.
Make Morgan Rielly the captian, he played with the emotion and passion nobody else would. Remember what he did to Grieg? Thats what we like to see honestly. (besides the suspension)
I think the Leafs' new strategy is to piss off Tavares to the point he's willing to leave, and now you have the $ to sign Marner. This organization has a history of disrespecting their captains.
Saying Mathew’s got hurt is why he couldn’t do anything is kind of a cop out. The best players find a way to still produce McDavid put up 8 points in 2 games against Florida while dealing with an abdominal injury that requires surgery most likely. Drai single handedly destroyed Calgary a few years back with a brutal high ankle sprain he was basically on 1 leg.
@@johnsummerhill8323 All of McDavids friends have said he want to play in Toronto.The point is it's better to ride out their contracts and be 100% in control of who you get.McDavid will go where he wants and Toronto is his dream
i was one of the few fans that didn't want tavares. he was the biggest mistake of the matthews era. he wasn't what we needed at the time of his signing. and here we are...6 godamn years...we are still where we were when we first signed him. then we made him the captain over our drafted superstar. we even had a press conference, as if he led the islanders to a bunch of cup finals. his contract was also the reason why none of our drafted young stars took bridge deals. and no, nylander's contract wasn't a bridge deal either. his robotic demeanor pisses me off so much! have you EVER seen him try to rally his teammates? get angry? scream? It's always the same fucking robotic expression. The same words are always uttered. his playoff resume as captain is a grand total of TWO fucking rounds won! what more proof do you need to make the change?! hopefully, matthews learned how NOT to lead!
hahahaha captaincy change? Nothing can correct the imbalanced lineup and horrible contracts burdening the leafs. Not even signing two older defensemen to long term deals (for their age) - Ekman Larsson and Tanev? As a Habs fan this is music to my ears - again a top heavy Leafs team that will fall off the playoff tree the way that leaves do.... :)

Here’s the recipe to win: This is Matthew’s team, make him Captain…NOW. Let Auston select his Assistant Captains…and if he chooses Marner, then find a way to extend Marner. Then let this leadership group and Burube’s coaching team commit to each other and help Treeliving build the roster according to their commitment. Collaboration breeds innovation. Tavares as captain is just dumb, 0 effort in playoffs at 2 points. Was not even winning face offs! He should do TML a favor and waive ! Fire Shanahan and maybe TML won't suck as much.
