Even as a long haul trucker and company owner, I dress both for the task and to project respect. I set an example for my drivers, my jeans are clean and pressed, my shirts are tucked in and buttoned, my boots are shined and laced. We are in flatbed trucking and I can't emphasize how often we get compliments from customers regarding our appearance. I have stepped out of the truck and been told, "as soon as we saw you on the jobsite, we knew you were a professional". Our equipment and our appearance makes a statement, and compared to what passes for a truck driver these days, guys wearing pajama pants and flip flops, we set ourselves apart.

I started wearing suits almost everyday about three years ago. I was in a turning point in my life, I started living wear I work and working wear I lived. The lines started getting blurred massively as to what was work and and what was living. I also went into a PTSD reactionary mode in my life; I found that dressing in a suit everyday helped me to feel safe. I have spent most of my life wearing uniforms, either military or for work. Dressing up gives me a mindset of, "being on mission". I also have had a serious affinity for shoes my entire life (yes, I was the guy in garrison with 20 pairs of boots), so most days, I get dressed from the ground up; the day is defined by what shoes I want to wear that day. Then, of course, I match the suit to the shoes. I was afraid, in Austin, Texas, a very casual city, to start wearing suits. I have to admit, I have gotten a couple of pointed fingers and snickers from people, mostly women, when it is 100 degrees outside and I am in a three piece suit. But, by and large, no one gives a F***. The compliments outweigh the negatives. So, bottom line, do what you feel you have to do for you. Screw everyone else. By the way, it does not have to be expensive. I buy most of my suits at Goodwill and have them altered to my taste. Most of my suits, I have less than $300 in them total. The shoes cost more.

I used to run 12 suits, 30+ dress shirts, and 40 ties. Picking what to wear the next day took about 45 seconds before bed. It’s really not that complicated or difficult. Shoes have always been the problem. Find some that look good and are comfortable, buy a few pairs, and wear them.

@Randall1539
@Randall1539 2 года назад
@@josemariarodriguez4462 I'd say a white t shirt blue or black jeans and some leather boots. Spend quality money on the boots. Make sure the jeans fit your body type well. I prefer a slim fit or sometimes an athletic fit. Make sure you get a decent fragrance (blue de chanel, dolce and Gabbana light blue, terre de hermes are a few that come to mind. watch some fragrance channels to get an idea of what to buy and go to Macy's, saks or nordstrom to smell some and see what you like). If you want to dress up a bit more get some basic white or blue button downs and style them with your jeans or maybe a pair of Chinos. Another killer look is to get a basic cashmere v neck sweater and wear them with jeans (saks off fifth usually has good sales). For more formal occasions get a nice fitting charcoal suit. And a pair of black Oxfords and brown Oxfords. White dress shirts are great with classic ties. Finally, don't forget a nice watch. Seiko, bulova, tissot, and orient all make nice watches. Do some research to figure out what works for your style. Focus on the basics. And buy the best quality shoes and outerwear that you can afford. Good luck

I am forty-six years old. When I was fourteen, kids in school thought that I was an Englishman because of the way that I dressed. I went on vacation to San Antonio and was walking along the "River Walk" dressed in a fine suit (also at fourteen years old) and a cute gondolier saluted me by asking: "Excuse me sir! Do you have any Grey Poupon?" 🤣 I was very amused and our family laughed about it, in that pre-selfie epoch. My point is, I have always made it a point of dressing just a tad-bit above the...expected. That way, you always come out on top.

That is true, people judge a book by its cover. Whether it is a good or bad thing to do, it does not matter because people still do it
@kingartifex
@kingartifex 2 года назад
I believe that context is king. While I would like to dress sharp, you are not required by context to do so unless you are going out on a friday night or to some formal event. If you wear elegant clothes outside of context, people are just going to think you are weird or trying too hard. I saw a guy in my workplace who did exactly that, he wore 3 piece suits all the timr, while everyone else wore business casual clothes (jeans + shirt etc.). I am not making this up, he was literally the laughing stock because of that, even I found him weird tbh. JP is an international public figure and a university professor, it makes sense for him to wear a suit in front of 10000 people. If you are just an average joe going to buy groceries, going to the store all dressed up IS weird, and people WILL judge you negatively. In summary, dress nice when you have the opportunity for it, otherwise go with casual clothes (casual does not mean sloppy). Always ask yourself "would I feel comfortable going to the supermarket dressed like this"
@kingartifex
@kingartifex 2 года назад
@Omora well I mean its the same principle as wearing crocs in public. Sure you are free to wear whatever you like, but crocs are ugly and people will look at you weird if you wear them out on the street. My point is, the way we dress directly changes the way others perceive us, whether we like it or not. We don't dress only for ourselves, that is a benign lie some people tell themselves. When we dress with clothes out of context, people do judge us (its just the way us humans are hardwired) so yeah you can anyway choose to override this and wear whatever you like with confidence, but it doesn't always work, you don't always get the desired effect. The guy I mentioned wore his suits with confidence (really nice guy btw), he thought he was stylish, but really the only effect that he obtained was people asking "why is this guy wearing a suit? this is not a wedding". side note: dressing sharper than your own direct manager on a daily basis can sometimes be a bad thing, they can feel like you are being pompous and trying to upstage them

I’m interested, what was the work environment that he was in? An office? Or other? I am self employed as a mobile notary, and help people in hospitals, schools, title offices for mortgage loans, etc… I try to wear a suit uniform most days that I work, often including a a new discovery for me, shirt stays and even include 3 piece, when it isn’t too hot out. That’s because I go at it as a sign of respect to those I meet with, because the documents I help with are important to them. I try to convey competency, attention to detail, and seriousness. I can lose the vest, take the tie off and get it to a casual suit situation if I need to, like when taking my wife out on a night on the town, grocery pick up, certain networking events that are more low key, etc. Staying at full 3 piece is a lot for most occasions even for work. I only meet people for about 30 minutes at a time. I don’t know how it would go over if they see me every day.
@kingartifex

@@chrisblanc663 I think given the nature of your work it makes sense and a suit sounds like a very good option. Regarding the work environment it was business casual office environment, but I have seen people even come with sports clothes despite the dress code. After hopping companies a bit I can say its pretty much the same in every company, noone wears formal clothes except maybe the CEO or something

This is correct. If you're going to a homie's house for drinks, a plain tshirt, jeans/shorts and sneakers is enough. Going to a wedding? Wear a suit. Going to work where casual attire is encouraged? Wear a nice t-shirt, jeans, and clean sneakers. No need to wear suits everytime.

I am not even sure my current employer knows I dropped out of high school and I work as a consigliere type of role, processing corporate credit card applications for one of the biggest credit card companies. The main point about rules applies to style as well: once you understand the rules well enough, you know how to break them too. To dress up above the style promoted by Peterson you have to reach the levels seen in rich-born italian men OR in southern italian men (who aren't necessarily born with money, but do have a particular culture that favours artistic sensitivity). What they do is basically say less with more (seen through the use of simple and discrete colours, and ad hoc shapes in extremely good quality clothes) OR combine things in unusual ways that still work, to show off that deep understanding of rules (what's commonly referred to as "sprezzatura" - on the surface of it, a supposed disdain of said rules). P.S. Mentally create your "uniforms" when you buy your clothes. You're going to expend almost 0 energy at the time of dressing if you do that since you already know what combinations you can do and what purposes they serve.

There is just something about his message that resonates deeply within me. He guided me when I was lost, and provided me with something I could use to orient myself and find meaning in my life, helped me save my father who was lost, and has encouraged me countless times to voluntarily face life head on and move forward one day at a time. And I do think you can dress casually and still dress well. My favorite thing to wear is a nice pair of dark navy jeans, nice t-shirt and one of several high end leather jackets I own along side a good pair of cowboy boots or regular boots. It's not on the same level as a suit but I still look nice and not like a kid, the fact that everything I wear is fitted and exactly my size helps to. Nothing screams kid when it comes to clothes like wearing stuff that's to big or to small.

Now this may sound egotistical and it may well be but I don't think that it is. I think it is simply that I am comfortable with who and what I am and I don't need validation from others or to impress anybody. I DON'T own a suit, a dress jacket of any sort or even a tie. Dressing good is different from dressing UP! Like one gentleman said, a lot of folks are not comfortable around people who are dressed up. They come across as prim and proper. Only in situations that demand dressing up should it be done. Otherwise cool, crisp and neat is the best. For that, the fit and fabric should be great.

I found your Channel on accident watching Alpha M who I also watch and listen to. I watched your Oxfords not Brogues video and really enjoyed and also learned something. I am a realtor in Tennessee and as I’m sure you and everyone else knows it is ultra competitive here in my career field and having that one up is absolutely mandatory to be successful. I have always believed that a stylish man is a confident man and a confident man is a successful man and in todays world slummy weak clothing choices have become the normal which is a shame. I blame a lot of the problem on the sheer lack of education on proper clothing choices and the benefits of just dressing and holding yourself to personal and professional standard. I give my biggest thank you for making these videos and helping guide men in the correct direction on how to do these things properly and helping someone like me who had just an idea but no true knowledge on the subject but now have a good understanding. It has helped me personally it has helped me professionally and it has reinvigorated my confidence and I cannot tell you enough of how thankful I am for you and the other RU-vid creators like you who take the time to educate and inspire young men to hold themselves to a higher standard because they are better men and they deserve to treat themselves as the better men they are.

@Norwegian War Hound - you have so many options in dressing well without wearing a suit. Slacks, chinos, cords, sweaters, jackets, sport-coats, etc. What’s key is the fit of each garment. I would suggest that you also pay attention to how you accessorize your ensembles; e.g., high-quality socks, different watches and/or different different watch-straps/bands. Make sure your footwear is clean and well-maintained. Keep your hair and nails clean and groomed. Antonio has plenty of videos to help you with coordinating outfits and I would also suggest these channels as supplemental to RMRS: Gentleman’s Gazette, 40 Over Fashion, and The Style O.G. Good luck!

I’d suggest leaning hard into Oxford shirts (OCBD). Boots, dark wash jeans, belt/suspenders and an OCBD is solid daily casual uniform. In a pinch you can throw a sports jacket on it to really make it a smart casual look. Or hell any jacket really. Very versatile uniform.

My everyday uniform is a cotton or wool work shirt, dark wash jeans, and a good pair of boots. Military tuck to ensure tails are tucked in, leather matches the boots, and the correct watch for that day's agenda! Looking back, the details are what makes my style so effective. I was able to transform a food processing uniform just by making sure it was stain free and pressed, the fit correct down to the trousers break, and that the uniform was tucked in. I stood out in a good way and doubled my income.

I agree with Dr Peterson here on pretty much everything. I'm 37 years old, and a part of me has actually always enjoyed getting dressed up. Even when I was in my teens, I always felt excited any time I would go to a wedding or any other event that gave me a reason to dress up. But unfortunately I've always been lazy as well. Up until about 2 years ago I was exactly THAT guy - I would wear oversized T shirts, baggy basketball shorts, sports shoes, etc. Very unflattering. Then something clicked inside me and I decided i needed to make a change - if I wanted to be taken more seriously in life, I need to put more effort into how I present myself. RMRS helped me a lot to lean some great tips, and to start settings things right. Over the last be year or two I've totally recreated my wardrobe, and I don't find choosing my outfit each morning an effort or a chore at all - i actually get enjoyment out of it. Each morning picking what I'm going to wear is like my way of projecting my own personality and my own mood on that given day - a form of self expression - and in a way it almost makes me feel that little bit more in touch with myself. Another nice bonus is that I'm a very lax / lazy person by nature, and taking pride in my appearance - carefully selecting outfits, lying my shoes polished, keeping my hair trimmed, etc - is something that takes discipline, and it actually helps break me out of those naturally lazy habits that are frankly quite self destructive.

I mean there’s always a time and a place. If you’re taking a Saturday to run some errands like; oil change, grocery shopping, dry cleaners, whatever. Who really cares what you’re wearing? I think these guys are a little too full of themselves.
@pete3198
@pete3198 2 года назад
@@TheShop90sKids If course you obviously don't wear the same thing to a black tie event that you would wear to a baseball game. There's always context. Indeed Jordan Peterson himself doesn't always wear a 3 piece suit, I've seen him in jeans and a button up shirt, for example. I think the point he's trying to make isn't that you need to wear a suit everywhere you go. It's moreso "don't be a slob and let yourself go". And don't dress like a child. When I used to go to the shops to do grocer shopping for example, or go to a casual bbq with friends, I would wear super baggy t-shirts, long and lost mesh basketball shorts, loud and courful basketball shoes, sometimes a cap. As Jordan pointed out, I did kinda dress like a child. Now days at the very least I will think about my outfit - a well fitted Tee or polo, some nice fitting (unripped) jeans, and a nice pair of shoes is still very comfortable, but at least I don't look like a bum. I don't think it takes me any more effort really to put on that outfit vs the old baggy shorts and shirt, yet it makes a difference in how I'll be perceived and how people will respond to me...as well as making me feel better.

@@pete3198 right but I don’t see why you can’t still wear a tee shirt, some ball shorts and sneakers, if you’re going to a grocery store. Obviously it should mature as you age. Instead of wearing loud colorful nikes and and a baggy graphic tee, and shorts. Change it to minimal sneakers with neutral colors and a white tee that fits your body type. But I still stand on the side of who really gives af what you wear to the grocery store lol you can still dress mature without looking like an old guy like these guys.
@pete3198
@pete3198 2 года назад
@@TheShop90sKids You can, it just does kinda give off a very mature / adult look, that's all. Which is fine if you don't care how you look out what people think and you just want to be comfortable. I think it's interesting just how different this era is compared with the past. If you look at video footage of photos from say, the 1950s, you'll see almost every single man wearing a suit, tie, coat and in many cases a hat. Every woman is wearing a dress, hair done, make-up done, etc. Even when you are just checking footage of people in the city shopping, this was what you saw everywhere. Watching the footage really does portray a sense of overall pride in the citizens. Even if people were just going to the shop, they still made the basic effort to be neat and well presented. It's like there was this general understanding that you always want to try to put your best foot forward, and looking sloppy reflected poorly on a person - implied a lack of pride. Now days many people won't even wear a suit or a pair of nicely polished oxfords to a job interview. I understand that it's just a different era and a different mindset, people were much more formal / conservative in general, not only in appearance but also in manner. I guess it's just a change in times.

The staffs there treat me well. Help me open the car door, greet me at the elevator checkpoint, etc. Then one day in the weekend I decided to stop by the office to pick up something. I wasn’t sloppy but wearing simple jeans and t-shirt. Got stopped at every security checkpoint, need to register, etc. My Disney-fied younger self would’ve been offended being judged not for my “intrinsic worth.” But now I can totally understand why they took the extra precaution.

I understand and I like the idea of wearing a suit out to places. I even tried it a couple of times in very low pressure settings, like running errands in a couple of stores and picking my daughter up at school. What I found was I had people asking me “why are you so dressed up?” I looked out of place next to the guys in their t-shirts and jeans. Yeah I looked sharp, but I also stood out like a sore thumb. Any advice on this? I’d be perfectly happy wearing suits every day of the week. I like the way I look in them. But at work and in my personal life, I feel like I’m going to look weird 99% of the time.

In the beginning I also had the same feeling like you, people started asking questions and I felt out of place. However as time went on, I've noticed that people also treated me different and talked to me with more respect. That is because you will get more and more confident when going outside dreseed up and people will react to it.
