It has been revealed that menopausal female offenders could be spared jail under new sentencing guidelines for judges and magistrates. So is this something that should be a get out of jail free card? Do any of our women suffer from meno-rage? Whilst Nadia admits to struggling with her emotions whilst menopausal, she also feels that typically women are put into prison easily and believes people who go into prison should receive mental health care. For Kelly she thinks terms such as menopause are being used flippantly and should not be used to excuse bad behaviour.

They are going to say that women that have periods should be spared jail time next. Ridiculous. I am glad that at least most of the people that voted on the poll have enough sense.

I do have strong views on people who don’t think menopause is a big deal but I agree with you people have terminal illnesses and long term illnesses and still have to go to prison and serve a sentence.

Men tend to be more violent as a direct result of such high levels of the hormone Testosterone. Should we not give men a pass on crime as they're constantly dealing with a large amount the hormone directly responsible for aggression, disagreeableness and risk taking? Women also barely get prison sentenced as it is. If we go any lighter on women, they will be exempt from punishment all together.

If the levels of testosterone in a man are abnormally high, yes, it should be considered as a contributing factor to criminality. If it’s normal testosterone that average men have throughout their lifetime, no, it should not. The period of menopause in a woman’s life would constitute an actual medical condition with physical symptoms even being visible.

If you know something is wrong, you are a criminal. That’s it. Unless there are genuine diagnoses of mental health which inhibit you, and you are NOT responsible for your actions (psychosis, delusion, learning disabilities). If you know you’ve committed a crime, and you understand it was illegal, you need to face punishment. It’s very bizarre to even consider this.

It’s a complicated issue. Almost anything that affects hormones can cause “out of character” behavior…

@@aa-fw2pw I mean, I’m sure they KNOW but whether they had any actual CONTROL to stop the situation would be up for debate. Irregular hormones in any human being can cause complete shifts in someone’s personality and mental capabilities. They are even doing studies right now on the effect that the birth control pill has on women’s cortisol response. I think if the person has never committed a crime before and all of a sudden commits a crime while going through menopause, maybe there should be some consideration. If the person has committed crimes before, then probably not.

@signalfire15 I see your point. I actually have a teenage autistic niece with borderline personality disorder, so I know how it can be. I suppose we also have to take in both sides of the situation. If such a menopausal woman physically abused someone, shouldn't the victim also receive justice? In all honesty, lots of people will then start using that as an excuse. What then?

@@aa-fw2pw Yeah, that’s why I’m saying it’s a complicated issue because I don’t think there is a black and white answer. I think justice should be served but I think in women who have not exhibited any previous criminal behavior, maybe some leniency or consideration can be given. Of course, it would also depend on the severity of the crime committed.

Do the crime, do the time. Being in prison is a punishment but it’s not like you’re not supported and looked after at His Majesty’s Pleasure. Why are they making out going to prison is something that menopausal women shouldn’t go through? It makes no sense.

Men go through something similar their hormones change when they get older so therefore these thoughts could be used for men too. So where would this end.
